Chapter 56: Troubling Teens

It had been a couple of days since Adrian’s arrival at Banur’s doorstep. In those days, he learned a lot about the tribe. Things that weren’t mentioned in the books he read about them.

In other words, he got to experience the truth that the church had hidden from everyone. But the most baffling thing he discovered about the tribe was their communal nature.

Apart from the area accessible only to the Chieftain and the council, the rest of the space was free for everyone. The concept of owning things didn’t exist for them. Obviously, there were a few exceptions, such as weapons and slaves.

But besides those things, everything was available to the others, from food to lodgings. One could eat the food made by someone else or sleep inside anyone’s tent.

If it weren’t for the unwilling slaves and the skulls handing at random places, it would have been a great vacation spot for Nexarians.

Apart from the things he had learned, A’Mila and Adrian had several detailed talks about Vesper, as they now lived together.

The first thing Adrian asked A’Mila was how Vesper had managed to get back to Nexaria before, hoping there might be a way for him to go back and help her... if it wasn’t too late already.

A’Mila shook her head and explained that they disguised Vesper as a slave among the tribes who ran away from them. Eventually, she was "rescued" by Nexarian soldiers who used to be stationed nearby.

She added that the tribe didn’t know how to create cracks in the veil as the Nexarians did. Also, they had already wrecked the Nexarian camps around their settlement, so there was no way for Adrian to return, at least as far as they were aware.

If they were to travel through the veil, they needed the Nexarian army’s assistance, but that seemed unlikely to happen given the bad blood between them.

’It’s a cluster fuck of a situation, that much is certain.’ Adrian thought as he walked through the settlement.

Besides their talks regarding Vesper, A’Mila was teaching Adrian a bit of their language called Banu. While he was a quick learner, the language was a bit difficult to grasp, but he was slowly progressing towards perfection.

But that wasn’t all Adrian had going for him. After all, he was A’Mila’s ’Miku’, the Banu term for a boy toy. Despite the meaning behind the word, the situation wasn’t all that bad.

Unlike the rest of the slaves, Adrian didn’t have to help in the fields or carry massive crates from one place to another. His duties were solely determined by whatever A’Mila requested, and truth be told, she never bothered making any demands of him.

That’s why he spent most of his time walking around the settlement, familiarising himself with the people and their culture. After all, it was the easiest way to make a place in a stranger’s heart and gain their favour.

Why did he want to gain their favour? The answer was simple. He didn’t know how long he would be stuck with them. Instead of causing problems, he aimed to use his time wisely and improve his skills. To do that, he needed support from the tribe members.

After all, the tribespeople were the ones who were familiar with the creatures found there. With their help, Adrian aimed to get stronger than ever before and then confront the Ravens on his return.

’So far so good. If I keep this up, things should go smoothly during the hunting session tommrow. I might even upgrade the index and remove the organ restriction.

While lost in his thoughts, he was greeted by one of the tribe members, reminding him to stop wondering about the future and focus on the present.

So far, he was treated well by the other tribe members. Though their interactions with him differed from how they engaged with one another, there was still a sense of respect towards him.

Adrian didn’t care if it was due to his victory over Bakira or his status as the Chieftain’s Miku. He was happy as long as no one bothered him all that much.

’A’Mila had a point. Wearing the collar works like a charm – no one bothers me. While I feel weird wearing it, it did come with decent stats for an accessory. So there’s that.’

While being ignored by the tribals was what he wanted, Adrian couldn’t help but notice them behaving weirdly behind his back. At first, he thought it was because he ’belonged’ to the matriarch. But slowly, he began to realise something.

The tribespeople not only behaved weirdly with him, but sometimes, he could hear them laughing behind his back. At first, he thought his mind was playing tricks on him, but soon, he became sure that was the case.

Even now, he heard someone snicker as he walked past another group of Banurs. He turned around, and sure enough, four teenagers were laughing while pointing at him.

While those around them averted their gaze, the young ones didn’t bother and kept laughing.

’They are young... let’s just ignore them.’

A’Mila had already warned Adrian about such treatment, and as per her advice, he decided not to engage with them. However, it seemed the raging hormones within blinded the boys as one of them picked a stone and threw it at Adrian.

Adrian tilted his head and dodged. Still, he didn’t bother escalating the situation and kept walking. Then came another stone, then one more... soon they kept coming.

’These fucking morons...’

By now, Adrian’s patience was wearing thin. But he didn’t react as A’Mila had informed him he would be going on a hunt and didn’t want anything or anyone to hamper his chances.

Unfortunately for him, the brats didn’t want to stop, and that’s when Adrian heard something from them in their language.

"Forget about the infertile bastard. He doesn’t have the balls to face Banurs like us."

Hearing such a childish taunt was amusing, and Adrian couldn’t help but laugh.

’It’s only been two days, and they already forgot what I did to Bakira? That’s quite bold of them, to be honest. But I can’t let it go, can I? It’s time for another lesson, boys. One you’ll never forget.’
