Chapter 202: [Weekly Bonus Chapter 2/2] Scorching Rain

A loud explosion shook the forest. The size of the blast told what kind of havoc had consumed the goblins within.

"Kee—"

"Keekee!"

"Keee! Human monster! Run!"

The journey to the next settlement was quicker than expected and more interesting. Instead of goblins, the trio had found a settlement housing hobgoblins, and there were quite a lot of them.

Since hobgoblins were the next stage in the evolution of goblins, they were capable of interspecies communication. It was fun to see them howl, claiming Sophia was a monster, but being called such by a literal monster only angered her more, prompting her to cause more chaos.

’Giving her the Shaman’s staff was a good idea,’ Adrian thought, watching them from a distance. ’Not only does it reduce the charging time for her spells, it also amplifies it. A perfect item for her.’

While Amelia and Sophia dealt with the hobgoblins, Adrian left to deal with the next sentinel, who was probably a shaman, like before. Why, you ask?

Because they had killed the mutant goblins required to complete the task, Adrian wasn’t gaining any experience from killing them. Hence, he decided not to waste time and looked for stronger creatures to kill.

’Thanks to that Jung guy, I couldn’t absorb the Shaman or get any organs from it. Hopefully, I’ll find something better here...’

However, there weren’t any strong monsters like he had thought. The place was filled with hobgoblins but no special class goblins.

’That’s... strange,’ Adrian thought. ’I was pretty sure there had to be someone. Did we end up in the wrong settlement?’

Just as he was about to drop the idea, he heard Sophia call him, waving something in her hand.

"We found it!" she yelled. "The other part of the key!"

"What? Where did you find it?" he asked.

"One of the hobgoblins was running away with it," Amelia replied. "I struck it down, and here we are."

"You don’t look happy?" Sophia commented, seeing Adrian’s downcast face.

"It’s nothing... Let’s go."

"You’re upset because you didn’t get to fight," Amelia commented as the trio entered the forest towards the boss’s domain.

"I said I’m fine-"

"Just admit it," Sophia rolled her eyes. "You’ll still get to kill the boss, so just get its organs or whatever you do with those."

"We’re here," Adrian announced, ignoring their bickering.

The group found themselves standing in front of a massive rusty door. Thick vines and creeping ivy snaked their way up its surface, intertwining with rusted hinges and cracked wood.

The metal handles, once shiny now, were tarnished and worn, their intricate designs barely visible beneath layers of grime and decay. Surprisingly, there was nothing behind the door—it was just that, a door leading nowhere.

"This... looks ancient."

"Forget about the key. Will the lock even be working after all this time?"

"Only one way to find out," Adrian replied, pushing the key into the hole.

The door opened, leading into a separate space from the rest of the dungeon. But it was just the beginning. Inside were hundreds of goblins of various classes, including Shamans, feasting on what appeared to be a massive lizard.

Behind them was another door, which led to the boss’s room. But to reach there, they needed to deal with the goblins first.

"Hey! No one invited me to the party!" Adrian said, acting offended. "Now I have a reason to ruin it."

Sophia shone in these conditions. After all, AOE skills were her speciality, and dealing with hordes of creatures was relatively easy for her. But the rest didn’t want her to outshine them and went to action before she did.

Adrian used his trusty move, [Minon Fury], to rip through the goblins like a cyclone. On the other hand, Amelia used the enemy’s attacks against them, prompting them to start fighting each other.

But despite their attempts, Sophia stole the show with a single spell. Unlike before, she didn’t use explosions to kill the beasts. Instead, she formed a cloud that rained lava.

The goblins looked up in confusion as clouds gathered inside the massive hall. Then, with a thundering noise, the clouds burst open, raining down molten lava.

Screams of agony filled the hall as goblins were engulfed in flames, their skin blistering and bubbling under the scorching heat. They writhed and wriggled, trying in vain to escape the searing pain that consumed them.

Sophia watched as the chaos unfolded around her. Sweat trickled down her head as she continued to channel the deadly storm through the Shaman’s Staff.

The lava poured down like a relentless stream, leaving nothing but destruction and despair in its wake.

Amidst the carnage, a lone goblin managed to crawl towards Sophia, his body charred and blackened by the inferno.

He reached out a trembling hand, attempting to drag Sophia down with her. Amelia stomped on the creature’s head, killing it before it could do any damage.

In the aftermath of Sophia’s devastating spell, the once bustling hall was in ruins. The charred floor smouldered among piles of ash, and the smell of burning flesh filled the air.

Goblins, their bodies blackened and twisted by the searing heat, lay scattered across the scorched floor. Some of the unfortunate ones were still alive, feeling a pain that made them beg for death.

Their agonising moans filled the hall as they writhed in pain. While most of them lay motionless, their eyes staring blankly into the distance, their spirits had already departed to the afterlife.

"...That spell was a bit over the top," Adrian commented, covering his nose.

"It’s been a while since I saw [Scorching Rain]," Amelia chimed in. "Good to see you haven’t lost your touch, Sophia."

"It was nothing," Sophia replied, flipping her hair. "This staff can conduct my magic pretty well, so I thought, why not try using my ultimate spell."

"Thanks to that, the hall’s clear," Adrian said, trying to open the door with all his might. "Time to deal with the boss and get out of here..."
