Chapter 176: Facing The Family (1)

Adrian stood alone on the hospital’s terrace, his eyes fixed on the vast expanse of the night sky above. It had been three long years since he had last gazed upon Earth’s night sky, and it brought back memories, both good and bad.

The gentle moon and shimmering stars weren’t just lighting up the city below. They were outshining the neon-soaked streets that were trying their best to compete. However, Adrian appreciated the cool night air brushing against his face.

The more he looked around, the more he couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the world he had left behind.

"I never thought the skies would ever be this clean," Adrian mumbled as he enjoyed the Earth’s night sky for the first time in a while. "Maybe I undersold Earth to Nexarians."

Just then, Adrian heard footsteps behind him, and he turned to see Sophia approaching. Upon reaching the hospital, he had left the girls to visit Vesper, while he spent the time on the terrace.

The girls didn’t understand him, but Sophia did. She knew he still blamed himself for Vesper’s condition and didn’t want to face her just yet. Also, he had a lot going on his mind.

After all, he was summoned when his life was a mess and wondered how things had turned out. But one thing was clear, he didn’t give a rat’s ass about his ’family’. They had screwed him over enough times, and now he was planning to settle the score somewhat.

"Beautiful night, isn’t it?" she remarked, leaning on the walls like Adrian was.

"Yeah, it is," Adrian nodded, smiling. "Did you contact your family yet?"

"...Not yet," Sophia shook her head.

Unlike Adrian, who landed in his hometown, Sophia was thousands of miles away from Russia. At least that’s where she had last seen her family.

For a while, they stood in comfortable silence, content to simply enjoy each other’s company and the peaceful night. But like always, the silence lasted only a short time, and Adrian did something unexpected.

Adrian’s sudden movement caught Sophia off guard. He pulled her close, his intense gaze locking with hers. She felt her heart skip a beat, and her eyes widened in surprise at the unexpected closeness.

"W-What are you doing?" Sophia nervously chucked, but Adrian didn’t respond.

Adrian leaned close like he was going to kiss her, but instead, he whispered gently, his warm breath brushing against her ear.

"It looks like the association isn’t planning on leaving us alone," he said, hinting towards the other end of the terrace. "Can you feel them?"

Sophia paused momentarily, tuning up her senses as she focused on the subtle energy shifts around them. Despite the spies’ best efforts to erase their presence, she could sense the lingering traces of their mana, watching them from the shadows.

"How long have they been here?" Sophia asked, wrapping her arms around Adrian’s neck.

"Pretty much since I got here," Adrian replied, resting his forehead on Sophia’s. "They placed spies beforehand, even though I asked them not to. Well, it’s not like I can blame them. They have the right to be suspicious of us since we walked out of a dungeon."

"Be as it may, what do we do about them?"

"I’ll deal with them," Adrian replied, finally parting. "For now, you should go back and check if there are others, though I’m sure Seraphina would have noticed them already."

"Roger," Sophia replied, turning away. "By the way, that guy, James, wanted to ask about our sleeping arrangements. He said the association would be more than happy to arrange something for us."

"Not after the shit they pulled now," Adrian replied. "Tell him you’ll be staying with me in the Villa. If he has any more questions, he can ask me directly."

"Got it," Sophia disappeared through the gate, but only after reminding Adrian not to be too harsh on the spies.

The spied heard Sophia and knew their cover had been blown. However, as they turned to leave, they realised Adrian wasn’t in his spot anymore. In fact, he was nowhere to be seen. Panicked, the spies rushed to where he stood to find any trace of him.

"Where did he go?" one of the spies muttered, his eyes darting around the empty terrace.

"It doesn’t matter," another one replied. "Inform everyone to be on the lookout-"

As they scanned the area for any sign of Adrian, they failed to notice the faint flicker in the air. By the time one of them did, it was already too late.

Adrian appeared behind them and struck two spies in the head, knocking them out. The third tried retaliating, but Adrian grabbed him by the collar and pushed him over the railing.

"Impressive gear," Adrian mumbled while dangling the man from the terrace. "The skills, on the other hand, need some work."

The spy struggled against Adrian’s grip but otherwise remained calm, almost too calm.

"You can put him down now, Mr Fenrir," Officer James said, standing behind Adrian.

"And... If I don’t?"

"Then things would get unnecessarily ugly," James replied. "I’m here to apologise on my seniors’ behalf. But if you kill them, there won’t be much to apologise for-"

"I see..." Adrian mumbled.

The next moment, he released his grip, draining the colours of both James and the spy. But just as the spy began to fall, Adrian’s hand shot out, grabbing his arm and pulling him back onto the terrace with surprising strength.

James was taken aback as the spy slammed into him, and they fell on the floor.

"I thought you wanted my cooperation to work with the association," Adrian mumbled, looking down on them. "But I guess that was all just talk?"

"I know it looks messed up," James grunted, pushing the man off himself. "Believe me, I had no part in this. Some higher-ups wanted to test your skills and, unfortunately, made a poor decision. I rushed here as soon as I got to know about it-"

"Tell me, if they want to test anything, try asking. They’ll be surprised how easy that would make things," Adrian shook his head, wondering what kind of mess he got landed into. "Also, hand over your phone. I need to make a call."
