Chapter 175: Back Home (2)
Chapter 175: Back Home (2)
What followed that revelation was Adrian’s own set of revelations. The DRA officials were more than pleased to learn about Adrian’s stories about Nexaria.
Adrian knew the officials didn’t believe most of what he said and didn’t blame them. He would have a similar reaction if someone told him a farfetched tale.
However, Adrian wasn’t foolish enough to reveal everything he knew—not because he didn’t want to but because he had no reason to. He fed the DRA enough information to make them interested in them so that Vesper’s treatment could continue.
Adrian was prepared for when they left the dungeon and found themselves in a weird place. So, he made up a story for the girls to narrate in case they were interrogated.
As such, even if anyone interrogated them for information, they would only reveal what they wanted to. And since all of them would say the same thing, the DRA would most likely believe their story.
He didn’t tell them everything because Adrian was not interested in helping solve humanity’s problems, not at the moment. Also, because he wasn’t a fool to realise the position he was in.
To the DRA, they were a treasure trove of information, and Adrian wouldn’t let them have it for free.
Then, it was the DRA officer’s turn to answer Adrian’s questions, which he did diligently. Adrian wanted to know about everything that had happened since his disappearance, and the Officer was willing to share any information that was present in public records.
According to Officer James, the first dungeon opened in the middle of the Indian Ocean on the day of Adrian’s disappearance. But it was only one of the many dungeons that popped up out of nowhere.
They weren’t prepared for such attacks, and most countries managed to subdue the monsters. But it was the case for some smaller countries, and now they were overrun by my monsters.
These countries were now referred to as ’Blight Zones’, or, in other words, regions that the world had given up on. Those were the zones even the strongest hunters didn’t dare step foot in. But that wasn’t all.
"A week after the initial contact, the UNSC made a special force to take issues related to the dungeon, called the Dungeon Research Association," Officer James informed him.
"At first, we were the only association dealing with anything related to dungeons, but several organisations have emerged in the last four years and eased our burden. The people you encountered on the bridge belonged to one such org."
"I see," Adrian commented.
So far, the development surrounding the issue has been similar to that of Nexaria. As such, Adrian believed the Netherites were behind this mess as well.
Seraphina did tell us this would happen if the Nether were left unchecked. Thanks to the stupid power struggle on Nexaria, the Nether must have breached the Veil, and now here we are...
Pushing those thoughts aside, Adrian asked if the so-called hunters had gained any abilities or other powers to tackle the issue, and James replied positively.
Although he couldn’t discuss it in detail, he told Adrian what he could. According to him, a pandemic had hit Earth once the dungeons began popping up. The DRA believed it was due to the dungeon’s latent energy, which they called the Aurora.
Adrian suspected it was the same ’energy’ that the Nexarians used to measure a dungeon’s difficulty. However, he didn’t share the information with James, and he continued.
As per James, the pandemic affected 20% of the world’s population at the time, half of whom didn’t make it through. But those who did had their lives changed forever and went on to inherit mysterious powers.
"So most of the world is still more or less human?" Adrian asked.
"Yes, that’s why the hunter organisations are always on the lookout for talented hunters," Officer James replied, but it seemed the higher-ups didn’t want him to tell Adrian all that.
Adrian wasn’t blind to what was happening. The DRA probably wanted him and the others to work for them, and knowing there were others who would do the same would put their ambitions at risk.
However, James didn’t care about all that wanted Adrian to make a conscious decision. Even though Adrian didn’t let it show, he was impressed by the Officer’s honesty.
That’s why when others rushed to replace James with another officer, Adrian calmly got up and walked to the solid wall, staring intently at it. The next moment, he raised his hand and carefully traced his fingers in a circle.
The next moment, the circle popped out of its place, revealing a one-way mirror behind which the DRA’s higher-ups stood, observing the exchange between Adrian and James.
Thanks to the Kitsune eyes, Adrian was already aware of the one-way mirror and those standing behind. But he let them be since they weren’t causing any issues. Unfortunately, they did interrupt, and Adrian had to do what he had to do.
The look on the faces of the higher-ups told the entire story. They were shocked to see Adrian break a barrier that would easily make a C-ranker sweat bucket before they even scratched it, and Adrian broke it as if it were no big deal.
"Interrupt our session once more, and that’ll be the last you’ll see of me and my party," Adrian commented before calmly returning to the seat. "Where were we? Right, the organisations. As great as it sounds, I think I’ll hold off for a while before deciding."
’Who in the world is this guy?’ James thought, turning to see the faces of his subdued bosses, not paying attention to what Adrian was saying.
"Officer James?"
"Ah, yes! I got lost for a moment-"
"I was wondering if we could end this meeting here?" Adrian asked, but it sounded more like a demand than a request. "Since you know, I’ve returned after a long time, and I would like to meet my friend before heading home."
"O-Of course," James stammered, hastily getting up. "I can drive you and the rest of your... party to the hospital."
"That will be great, thank you."
