Chapter 152: Storming The Citadel (2)

Upon walking out of the armoury, the group stumbled upon the Nexarian Adrian had killed moments ago. While the Banurs ignored the corpse, Amelia and Sophia exchanged glances before staring at Adrian’s back.

"Killing without a second thought," Sophia murmured so only Amelia could hear her. "...he’s changed."

"Can you blame him?" Amelia replied in a cold tone. "I felt it when we sparred yesterday. It’s true Adrian has changed a lot, but he still cares about us and our opinions. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have decided to let those Tulkas go."

"Yeah..." Sophia sighed. "That reminds me, what did you decide to do with them?"

"Turned them into labourers who’d replace the farm animals. Just because I didn’t want to kill them doesn’t mean I’d be kind to them."

"I thought you’d do something much worse, considering what they did to you," Sophia raised an eyebrow, surprised by Amelia’s leniency.

"You know me well," Amelia replied with a straight face, but the venom in her voice conveyed her true intentions. "I’ll starve them. Give them just enough food to ensure they live a long and miserable life."

Sophia nodded before looking forward. Adrian, who always used to walk behind her, was now leading a charge against people they thought were their friends.

In just a few months, everything had changed. Friends became enemies, and their faith in each other was shaken. Some of her friends didn’t survive, while others suffered because of one person’s greed. But Sophia was grateful that those she cherished were still by her side.

However, she couldn’t help but wonder when someone else would break. The events had traumatised her to an extent, and she couldn’t trust anyone unquestioningly like she used to earlier.

"No one seems to be here," A’Mila commented, staring into the empty halls of the outpost.

"They are further down," Adrian replied confidently. "I instructed someone to cause a problem and distract them. But the explosion wouldn’t have gone unnoticed by them. They could be here at any moment."

True to his words, they heard the approaching crowd of Nexarians heading towards the armoury. The two factions stopped, staring at each other.

The Nexarians were surprised by the presence of the Tribals inside the outpost, but they were even more surprised to see who was leading them. It was a hero they knew and adored... but how was he even alive?

Unfortunately for them, the questions remained unanswered as the tribals launched themselves at the Nexarians. Earth shook as the two forces collided. Soon, the alarms went off, alerting everyone about the invasion.

But alas, the Nexarians couldn’t do much. The armoury had been emptied, and even if it hadn’t, they would have to cross the sea of enemies to get there, which seemed unlikely.

While the Nexarians were busy fighting the Banurs, Adrian suddenly raised his arm. Nothing happened momentarily, but soon, loud howling noises were heard as Fenris rushed inside the outpost with hundreds of direwolves following her commands.

A moment later, the Nexarians were sandwiched between the Banurs and the beasts in a crowded hall. Needless to say, they were about to be slaughtered. Content with the proceeds, Adrian grabbed one of the higher-ranking officials of the Nexarian army and dragged him back.

"I’ll leave the rest to you, brother," Adrian said, embracing Akila before heading towards the transfer station along with Amelia and Sophia.

A’Mila hugged her brother before hurrying to join Adrian and a couple of her closest aides. Akila didn’t know it then, but it was the last time he would see Adrian or his sister—at least for a while.

"Why are you doing this?" the officer yelled as Adrian dragged him away. "You were our heroes! Leaders summoned to help Nexaria-"

*Smack!*

Adrian got fed up with the man’s shouting and slapped him a few times. The man kept on yelling until he realised that Adrian would slap him whenever he spoke. So, he just glared at the heroes, cursing them instead.

"Heroes, saviours, protectors, and all that nonsense!" Adrian scoffed, rolling his eyes. "If you knew half the shit that Church did to us and the rest of the heroes, you wouldn’t be here barking at us. So save me your moral policing."

The people were surprised to see Adrian yell like that, but the officer seemed more shocked than all of them combined. Adrian didn’t remember it, but he had saved the officer’s life once.

That was the kind of man he remembered Adrian as. Unfortunately, that man seemed long gone, replaced by a raging husk with none of his kindness.

As they approached the room, Adrian noticed there were quite a few guards stationed there. He could have used [Illusionary Eyes] to get them out of there, but there was a problem. The skill was in cooldown.

"Get rid of them," Adrian mumbled into the officer’s ears. "You’re a higher ranking officer, you should be able to do-"

"I won’t!" the officer yelled, but Adrian placed his hands on his mouth before shoving him backwards. He couldn’t allow the guards to notice him because of the officer’s stupidity.

Thankfully, the guards didn’t notice them amid all the chaos. But Adrian wasn’t happy with how the officer acted and made it clear with a stiff punch to the midsection.

The officer dropped to his knees, gasping for air. Adrian grabbed him by his shirt and effortlessly lifted him off the ground before whispering in his ear.

"I don’t give a shit whether your men live or die," he said. "If you send them away, they might live another day. But if you refuse, I’d have no problem killing them all."

He continued, his gaze intensifying further. "So think carefully. Will you save them, or will you watch them plead for mercy right before your eyes? The decision is yours."

Having said his piece, Adrian dropped the man before drawing his sword. But before he could take a step, the officer grabbed his hand and agreed to help.

With a nod of approval from the former hero, the officer left to do as he was told. In no time, the soldiers rushed out to join the fight while the officer stood there, his head bowed in shame for his obedience to the ’enemy’.
