Chimaera's Conquest: The Legend Of The Devourer -
Chapter 132: Massacre (2)
Chapter 132: Massacre (2)
"Shields!" Skaha yelled.
The old man’s voice was followed by a muffled cry of pain as an arrow slammed into one of the guard’s throats. The guard stumbled backwards, clutching onto his neck as he fell to the ground with a thud.
"What the hell? How did they reach so far into our territory!?" Skaha yelled again. "Where is that damned creature!?"
On cue, his eyes went towards his ace, the Mammoroth, trapped by the Banurs. They couldn’t finish off the massive creature with just a dozen of them, but they could distract it while the rest took care of the Tulkas, and that’s how A’Mila and her legion of archers broke through their ranks.
"Damn it!" Skaha cursed his oversight.
His overconfidence in the Mammoroth was backfiring on him big time. But that was the least of his concerns as more arrows followed. Thankfully, all the guards had raised their shields by then.
But it was in vain, as the arrows rained on them in every direction, the raging wind helping the arrows to disperse and hit more targets.
More importantly, the worst part was that the rain was helping the archers conceal themselves. Couple that with the dark, and things got worse for them.
All the conditions should have worked against the archers, yet somehow, they were able to take advantage of nature and turn the situation on the Tulkas.
Skaha could only curse his fate while hiding behind his shield. After all, how could they protect themselves from a shower of arrows and archers they couldn’t see?
Skaha had never felt so helpless in his life. They were forced to cower behind their shields, yet more and more guards fell to the downpour of arrows.
But that was only the beginning of their problems.
The roar of approaching elves only added to their horror. There was still some distance between the two groups, but it meant nothing. They couldn’t lower their shields as the arrows would mow them down, and they wouldn’t be able to attack the elves if they remained as they were.
Suddenly, Skaha grabbed one of the guards, "Unleash the frenzied wolves!"
"But, my lord, they can’t differentiate between friends and foes-"
"Don’t argue with me, and do as you’re told!" Skaha yelled, pushing the man away. "Unleash the wolves and be done with it, or else I’ll have your head!"
The soldier gulped down his saliva and rushed toward the enclosures, knowing he was headed towards his death. After all, the frenzied wolves would attack the nearest thing first, and since he was releasing them, he would die first.
But there was no choice. If the soldier was going to die, he decided he would rather die helping the tribe, hoping his efforts would be recognised.
Skaha sighed as he watched the soldier disappear into the night, "I can’t believe it came to this..."
As excellent of a tamer as the Tulkas were, there were wolves that even they couldn’t tame and had gone mad due to constant taming attempts. Such creatures were known as Frenzied Wolves.
The tribe didn’t have much use for such creatures other than entertainment. They would usually pit them against some slaves and watch them tear apart the slaves alive. But now, they were the only hope for saving them.
"Retreat into the building," Skaha instructed the group but stopped when he heard someone approaching them. To his surprise, the soldier from before came rushing back, panting as if his life depended on it.
"What happened?" Skaha asked, looking around him. "Where are the damned creatures!?"
"They... are all... dead!" The soldier panted. "Not only them... every creature in the enclosures is dead!"
"What? How can this be? They were alive and well a couple of hours ago!?"
"Someone must have poisoned the ponds," the guards suggested, informing Skaha about the usual signs of poisoning he had observed, prompting Skaha to angrily throw away his staff.
"It must have been that bastard! That fucking outsider!"
As usual, Skaha was right in his deduction. After defeating the spiderlings, Adrian removed their venom glands and added them to the pool in the middle of the enclosures before leaving the Tulkas.
Adrian was well acquainted with the Tulka’s strength when it came to tamed beasts and knew he would have to deal with them sooner rather than later.
That’s why he had been going around the enclosures, and given his status, no one questioned him as he did whatever.
With so much water and potent venom, just one poison gland in each pool did the job. It would be a long while before the poison spread through the water.
So, it would be a while before the animals started feeling sick or died. As such, the tribe wouldn’t know anything was off until it was too late. Adrian hadn’t expected his plan to be revealed and the heroes to die, but in the end, that, too, worked in his favour.
As the chaos ensued with the heroes, the Tulkas were too preoccupied to attend to the beasts. Hence, no one found out about their condition until it was too late. It was a bold move on Adrian’s part that paid off tremendously.
Just then, another thought hit Skaha and cautiously glanced behind his shield. As he expected, the remaining beasts were all falling, one by one.
It was the same with the Mammoth. While it was still alive, it moved slowly, and the poison was slowly taking its effect on it as well.
"...we’re doomed," he mumbled under his breath.
All the planning and plotting he had done over the years had been ruined by one man. As much as that thought infuriated him, there wasn’t much he could do about it.
"My lord, order the retreat! We can’t win like this-"
The guard was still speaking when his head flew off, but this time, it wasn’t A’Mila or her archer who killed him, but Ahuli.
"Retreat? Only cowards do that," Ahuli snarled as the healers tried to pull him back inside, but the Chieftain pushed them aside.
Skaha could see his nephew was in pain, but his bloodlust overpowered the pain as he looked at his soldiers.
"Anyone else wants to retreat?"
