Chapter 126: Final Step (3)
Sweat beaded on Adrian’s brow as he fought to keep his composure. But just as Skaha was about to touch him, a voice called out from outside, distracting the old man.
"Uncle, are you in there?" Ahuli asked.
"Yes," Skaha replied, turning around. "I’ll be there in a moment."
After taking another look in the room, Skaha turned and left. Adrian sighed in relief as Skaha’s footsteps faded in the distance.
"That was close," Adrian mumbled before rushing toward the window and returning to his house.
However, Adrian was still worried. The expression on Skaha’s face told him that the old man knew something was off. Adrian wanted to slowly work his way around, gradually unsealing the heroes’ abilities.
’But that’s out of the window now,’ Adrian thought, walking inside his room where the girls awaited him.
"How was it?" Amelia asked, getting off the seat.
Adrian smiled, showing them the scroll. "I got the scroll, but we need to move fast. I suspect Skaha would start looking for it soon."
"...you fucked it up?" Sophia asked, giving Amelia a look, and they both smiled.
Back when they were in the guild, Adrian rarely ever made mistakes. They used to find it funny to even think of Adrian messing up because it never happened. So now, when Adrian did make a mistake, they couldn’t help but smile.
"Haha, very funny," Adrian rolled his eyes before handing them the scroll. "I’ll help you translate the text with the help of [Analysis], but you’re on your own after that."
"Are you going somewhere?" Sophia asked. She sensed Adrian wasn’t telling them something and feared it meant he was up to something risky.
"Some has to bring in the cavalry," Adrian winked and got to work.
Adrian carefully unfurled the old paper while the girls leaned in, curious. They studied the faded letters etched on the parchment with eager eyes. He reached out to touch the writing, but as soon as his finger made contact, a sharp sensation pierced his skin, drawing blood.
The girls followed suit, and as their blood dripped onto the paper, it vanished as if it was never there. Adrian furrowed his brow, puzzled by the strange occurrence, and the girls shrugged.
Suddenly, the letters began to glow with a faint light, lighting up the chamber with a strange glow. The following moment, the words came to life and began floating before their eyes.
Adrian recited the words with broken pronunciation, unaware of what would happen next. The girls listened intently as the letters flew past them, burning into their hands.
Even though their flesh sizzled as if they were being burnt, the sensation calmed them. Once they were done, the words disappeared from the scroll and were etched into Sophia’s and Amelia’s arms.
A strange power surged within them as the girls looked at each other and then back at Adrian, who had no marks on his hands.
"I can’t let myself be marked," he explained. "I have to leave, and I can’t risk anyone noticing the letters."
"Fair enough," Amelia shrugged. "So what do we do next?"
"According to the texts, you just need to touch their marks to undo the seal," Adrian replied before getting up. "It won’t be easy, but I trust you girls."
He continued, "Let’s go. I’ll take you to where the others are being held. That way, no one would be suspicious seeing you walking around alone."
The girls nodded, covering the markings on their hands. Adrian, Amelia, and Sophia walked towards the slave barns, the sun beating down on their backs.
As they approached the barns, an elder appeared, his weathered face creased with lines of age. He squinted at Adrian and addressed him by Milka, which was something rare nowadays as most referred to him as Tal’shira.
"Milka, where are you going with your slaves?"
Adrian turned towards the slaves with a disdainful expression, his eyes narrowing.
"The slaves forgot their place and disobeyed my order," He glanced at Amelia before replying, "I’m taking them to see their kin and show them how well I’m treating them compared to others and what would happen if they test me again."
"Yes, it’s important to keep your slaves in line," The elder smirked and nodded in agreement. "Treat them like they’re less than human, or they’ll try to take advantage of your ’kindness’."
"Indeed," Adrian replied, cursing the old man under his breath.
Meanwhile, the old man’s gaze shifted to the girls, lingering on their curves, and he couldn’t help but wonder how it would feel to enjoy them.
"Since you’re headed to the barns, mind if I try teaching them a lesson?" he asked slyly.
Adrian chuckled before walking uncomfortably close to the elder. "Sure, be my guest... if you want to regret it. Remember, they’re my slaves, not the tribe’s property."
"Hehe, don’t take this old man seriously," the elder chuckled nervously.
"I wasn’t," Adrian replied with a straight face, scaring the elder even more.
Noticing his reaction, the elder’s smile faltered, and he quickly excused himself and hurried away. Adrian sighed in relief before ushering the girls towards the barns.
"No time to waste," Adrian said, walking towards the barn.
Unfortunately, a few guards stood near the barn, and Adrian knew they would have to deal with them.
"Don’t waste your time here," Sophia mumbled, placing her hand on Adrian’s shoulder. "Leave them to us, and you do what you must."
Adrian nodded and told them to take care of themselves before hurrying towards the enclosure. He would need Fenris’s speed to return before sunrise.
However, someone had been waiting for Adrian when he reached the massive building.
"Going somewhere?" Ahuli asked as Adrian got on Fenris’s back.
"Oh, Chieftain," Adrian said, snapping back to attention and giving Ahuli a nod. "Not much going on, so I figured I’d head out to the forest for a hunt."
Ahuli grinned. "Funny, I was just thinking the same thing. Just let me finish up here, and I’ll come with you."
Adrian forced a smile, though inside, he was seething with frustration. He muttered every curse word he knew under his breath. Bringing Ahuli along was out of the question.
All he could do now was hope for a miracle, which did happen as Skaha burst into the room, frantically searching for Ahuli. Adrian’s hunch was correct—Skaha had gone back for the scroll, but he found it to be missing and was now in a panic.
"Ahuli!" Skaha yelled, and Adrian, being the ever-helpful soul, pointed Skaha towards him.
The two exchanged a few words and walked out together. While Adrian was safe to leave, it also put a stink on his plan as the girls would have to hurry.
"I can’t do much for them now," Adrian shook his head, instructing Fenris to rush. "Getting to the Banurs is more important at the moment."
