Chapter 125: Final Step (2)

Adrian crouched low in the bushes, observing the guards outside Skaha’s home. Their eyes scanned the surroundings for any signs of trouble.

Moments ago, he, along with Sophia and Amelia, had entered his house to fool everyone into thinking they were going to spend some quality time together.

But in reality, Adrian used his [Mimic] skill to slip out of the place unnoticed and was now hiding in the dense bushes, forming the next stage of his plan.

Adrian knew he had to slip past them without being seen if he wanted to get inside and find the scroll he needed. He had heard about the scroll from the Shaman’s mouth while Adrian was ’marking’ Sophia and Amelia.

Apparently, while the Shaman knew how to seal someone’s abilities, he didn’t know how to unseal them, and it was a secret that Skaha had been guarding for years.

Even Ahuli had no idea about the scroll’s existence, and the Shaman only knew about it in case something happened to Skaha. However, he wasn’t aware of its content or its hiding place other than that it was somewhere in Skaha’s home.

’The problem is, how do I get inside without alerting anyone?’

At first, Adrian had hoped the guard would move about and rotate. He planned on using that moment to try and get past them. But it didn’t seem like they had any intention of budging from the place.

’It looks like there’s no other way,’ Adrian sighed.

Slowly, he blended into the foliage, his form shifting and melding with the bushes until he was nearly invisible. With regular, short breaths, he waited for the right moment to make his move.

Soon enough, the guards turned their gaze away from the bushes, and Adrian made his move. The guard stood watch, eyes scanning the area for any signs of activity.

With careful steps, he approached them, mindful of his surroundings and actively changing his skin to become one with the area around him.

But then things took a drastic turn. As good as Adrian’s control over the [Mimic] skill was, it wasn’t perfect for such a recon mission.

As Adrian invisibly moved behind him, a flicker of something caught the guard’s attention. He noticed something off from the corner of his eyes, and for a brief moment, his gaze fell right where Adrian was standing.

Adrian froze, holding his breath as he prayed the guard wouldn’t notice him. Seconds stretched into eternity as the guard stared intently at the spot, looking suspiciously at nothing.

"What is it?" Another guard asked the former, who shook his head.

"Nothing of concern," the guard replied.

After a final look, the guard dismissed the thought, chalking it up to his imagination. He turned his gaze away, convinced that his eyes were playing tricks on him.

Adrian exhaled slowly, feeling relieved. He realised his mistake and slowly made his way towards Skaha’s home instead of rushing ahead. With careful steps, he crept past them, his movements silent as a whisper.

He slipped through the gate and into the courtyard, his heart racing as more and more adrenaline was pumped into his blood.

’Phew~ that was a close one,’ Adrian thought while jumping through the window, landing inside with a soft thud. ’Now, where would an old man hide his stuff?’

Once inside, Adrian began his search for the scroll. He darted from corner to corner, avoiding making any noise to alert the guards. After looking for a while, he found himself in a dimly lit chamber, surrounded by shelves lined with ancient tomes and artefacts.

’This has to be it,’ Adrian thought as he got to work.

He had been inside the tribe’s armoury quite a few times, and while they had their impressive tomes and artefacts the tribe had found during cave exploration, that was nothing before Skaha’s personal collection.

Adrian was tempted to take a few things for himself but decided otherwise, pushing the greedy thoughts out of his head.

’The old man might not notice a missing scroll, but if he realises things have gone missing, he would definitely look for the scroll first.’

But as Adrian searched frantically for the scroll, he couldn’t find it anywhere. Skaha was too smart to put all his eggs in one basket, but Adrian didn’t know that.

’Fucking hell! Where is that damned thing!?’

Adrian’s frustration was evident. The final phase of his plan wouldn’t work without the scroll. Unsealing the other heroes was crucial. The Banur’s attack wouldn’t work without it.

Frustration boiled within him, and he lashed out, kicking a nearby column in anger. To his surprise, the column shifted, revealing a hidden cabinet behind it. A scroll tumbled out, landing at Adrian’s feet.

[The entity, Broken Through Gacha Mechanics, excitedly looks at the User and asks him to roll the dice for her!]

[The entity, Sin of Sloth, yawns, congratulating her beloved User on his good fortune.]

[The entity, Conquerer Of Twelve Labours, is in disbelief, wondering what kind of horse poop he witnessed. He feels upset and expects the User to succeed through hard labour, not accidental luck.]

With a triumphant grin, Adrian waved off the prompts and snatched up the scroll, his fingers trembling with excitement. But before he could open it, he heard Skaha’s voice from the outside and realised he used all his luck to find the scroll.

’Fuck! Why is he here so soon!?’ Adrian panicked, and he quickly stashed the scroll in his inventory.

Adrian quickly hid the secret compartment before turning invisible once again. He had finished cleaning the mess when Skaha entered the room and began looking for something.

’Shit!’ Adrian cursed silently, praying that he wouldn’t be discovered.

He held his breath, trying to remain absolutely silent. Skaha’s gaze swept over the chamber, his eyes narrowing. It almost felt like he was staring at Adrian as the old man stretched his hand towards him.

’...there’s a difference between being a man and a dead man. So, no thanks.’ Adrian thought, slowly stepping backwards.
