Chapter 56: At What Cost!?

Chapter 56: At What Cost!?

Claire’s POV

"Whatever it was! I am not in the mood to talk about it," Sissy said, rolling her eyes. "I am going to shower, and you’d better be ready when I am done!" She gave me a look and walked off.

I chuckled quietly. "Why do I feel like I suddenly have a mother?" But the word "mother" caught me off guard, and I felt my heart sink as I thought of my child, who was no longer here.

I rose to my feet as I felt heavy in my heart. "How could I let myself get distracted and forget my own child?" Tears filled my eyes as a wave of guilt washed over me. "No," I whispered. "I need to stay away from him. Whether he loved me or not doesn’t matter. I just can’t be with him and let him remind me of those horrible memories."

I rushed to my room, tossing the script aside as I tried to steady my breathing. I wasn’t in the mood to read anymore, let alone go to that audition.

All because of that man! How did he still have such an effect on me? I was frustrated as I grabbed my anxiety pills, taking a couple of them to settle my nerves. "No," I whispered to myself firmly. "I need to stay away from anyone with the last name Kensington!"

I lay on my bed as tears slipped down my cheeks, lost in the painful memories of that night. I still couldn’t believe I had rushed out of the house over something I saw on TV—something I had thought I was already numb to.

If only I hadn’t run out that night. The rain had only made things worse, adding to the misery I already felt and pushing me further toward my breaking point.

Everything came rushing back to me, tearing my heart into pieces. But then I heard the bathroom door click open, signaling that Sissy was done. I still wasn’t ready. Though I didn’t want to work or do anything anymore, I knew I couldn’t let Sissy down. She had worked so hard for this opportunity.

Last time, Susan had gotten us kicked out of the project, and we were barely making a living since we came here as I had donated everything that I had earned till then. I needed this job more than ever, not just for me but for Sissy too.

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, hoping for some peace. But the moment I did, Eliam’s chubby, cute face appeared in my mind. His innocent smile made my heart ache, but it gave me strange relief.

I had a sudden urge to go to Eliam and hug him. I couldn’t explain why, but I felt that if I held him close, maybe it would calm the burning ache in my heart. The thought of his small arms wrapping around me, offering me the comfort I needed. It gave me a fleeting sense of peace.

I quickly shook off the thought. I quickly moved to get ready. I didn’t want Sissy to worry or nag me, especially when I wasn’t feeling my best. The last thing I needed was to add more stress after hearing her words.

With a deep breath, I grabbed my clothes and went to get ready. I had to pull myself together, for Sissy’s sake, for the job, and for Eliam’s innocent smile that had become a great source of my energy.

Sissy came out of the washroom, looking fresh and ready. It seemed like she had taken her time getting herself ready, thankfully. That gave me just enough time to collect myself and push the chaos of my emotions to the side.

"Shall we leave now?" Sissy asked, grabbing her bag and the script from our room.

I took a deep breath, trying to keep my emotions in check. I couldn’t afford to let them take over, not now.

"Yes, sure!" I replied, forcing a smile. I had to get this role no matter what. No matter how much I wanted to shut myself off from everything right now, this was important.

Sissy gave me a knowing look but didn’t say anything, and we both walked out together.

The cab was waiting outside, and we soon reached the building.

Sissy looked at me. "Ready?"

I took a deep breath and nodded. "Let’s go."

We arrived at the audition spot soon, and the moment I stepped inside, I felt butterflies in my stomach. Once, this was my dream— to act, to make a name for myself. But after marrying Evander, I had given it all up, becoming the perfect housewife that I could.

Now, being here again felt surreal, like I was stepping back into the life I had left behind, but at what cost?

As we entered the building, my eyes fell on a familiar figure— Damian Storme. Was he also part of this project? They hadn’t released much about the cast, but seeing him here, I was pretty sure he would be in it.

Why did I have to run into him now? I was barely managing to push thoughts of Evander aside, and just seeing Damian brought everything back— especially that painful night when Evander was burning up with fever.

"Oh my God! Don’t tell me Damian is in this cast!" Sissy gasped in awe as her eyes were almost popping out of her socket. She grabbed my hands and urged, "You have to be in this movie, even if it’s as a table or chair! I will take it!"

"Seriously?" I cringed and was about to push her away when a voice came from behind.

"Aren’t you that nanny?"

"Excuse me?" I asked as I was genuinely confused. "Are you talking to me, Mr. Storme?"

"Yes, indeed! Aren’t you the nanny from the Kensington family?" Damian replied with a playful smirk that made me want to roll my eyes. But I kept my cool and answered calmly.

"Mr. Storme, I hear that a lot; I must have one of those faces," I said with a polite smile. "But I have no idea what Kensington family you are talking about."
