Chapter 48: The Only Woman I Ever Loved!

Evander’s POV

I was extremely furious that Susan had twisted my words. Yes, I may have once muttered something about "revenge" in a moment of anger when Claire left. But to hear Susan bring it up like it was real... it made my blood boil. I wanted to crack open Susan’s brain to see exactly what she was trying to gain with her lies.

But Claire’s reaction to Susan’s words hit me harder than I expected. She wasn’t just hurt— she believed I had betrayed her and that I had an affair. I wanted to deny it all and tell her that it was all accusations, but I stopped myself. There was something deeper that I wanted to know and the things that I didn’t fully understand. I needed to hear it. I needed to know why she had left in the first place.

Yes, losing our child was devastating— anyone would feel crushed. But why hadn’t she told me about our baby? Why had she faced it alone? Why did she believe I had been with someone else?

It felt like there were endless questions twisting up inside me, filling me with regret and frustration. She thought I had abandoned her and left her for another woman. But standing here now, looking at how hurt she was... I could tell that she was not saying those words out of anger.

I wanted her to explain, but when she said that she loved me and I betrayed her, made my hurt crush into pieces.

Did she really love me? A question popped up in my mind as I tried to control my beating heart. She actually loved me and didn’t feel repulsive toward me!

I dragged her out of the apartment with me as the sight of Susan made me lose my temper.

I was shocked that she loved me, but the venom in Claire’s words was more surprising. She had always been quiet, never openly challenged me, and raised her voice at me like this. But now, here she was... there was rage in her eyes, her voice trembling with raw anger. The accusations were harsh, and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

"Divorce papers? What the hell are you talking about, Claire?" I asked, my voice barely concealing my frustration. Did she really think I had gone that far? Did she honestly believe I would want a divorce?

She looked away, her eyes misty, but the fury hadn’t left her face. I felt pain with her every word of accusation!

"You made me feel like a rag doll, Evander!" she snapped, her voice rising as she pushed me back again. I could feel her pain through her harsh words, and it killed me inside. "Your family treated me like a joke; your mistress showed me my place every chance she got. Do you know how many times I thought of leaving? But I held on... hoping you would come back, that you would explain everything."

I gritted my teeth, struggling to stay calm, but hearing her pain hurt. How had things become this twisted? How did she ever come to believe that I had betrayed her?

"Claire, you have got it wrong," I managed, grabbing her hands, trying to keep her from pushing me away again. "You never wanted me close, remember? You were the one who pushed me away from the start, the one who told me to stay out of your life. How could you suddenly turn around and accuse me of betrayal?"

My voice grew sharper as my only intention was to push her enough so that she could end up telling the truth. "And what divorce papers? You think I wanted a divorce? I never even signed anything like that."

But anger was clear as she looked back at me. Somewhere in her mind, she had convinced herself that I had cast her aside, that I had chosen another woman over her.

It didn’t make sense, but I couldn’t ignore her pain. "Claire, there is something going on here— something I don’t understand," I said, trying to keep my voice calm. "Tell me what you saw. What made you think I didn’t care?"

Her eyes flickered; there was something unreadable in her gaze— a mix of hurt and distrust. As much as I wanted answers, it was clear we were both standing on broken ground.

But if she thought I would let her walk away after this, she was wrong. I loved her... Just she had loved me! No, I still love her! I loved her even before I knew I was capable of loving anyone.

Claire was the only woman I had ever truly loved, the only woman I had ever touched. So how could she even think I had a mistress? And what about those divorce papers in my study— where did they come from? Hadn’t she sent me a lawyer to file a divorce the moment I returned?

A number of questions flooded my mind; each of them left me more confused. And what about my family? Had they treated her the way I was being treated back then? Weren’t they the ones who had pushed me into this marriage in the first place?

I had always assumed she was my mother’s choice, her "favorite" for me. That is why she was so determined to see us married, no matter the cost. But now... now I was starting to wonder what had really gone on behind my back. What had happened between us to bring us to this point?

"Don’t you dare act innocent now, Evander!" Claire’s voice cut through my thoughts, snapping me back to the harsh reality before me.

I looked into her eyes, and all I could see was pain and hatred staring back at me. I knew that whatever I said now wouldn’t make a difference. No words could soften the anger and betrayal she felt, so I decided to keep quiet, letting her unleash her frustration on me. Maybe, just maybe, it would help ease the pain she was carrying.

I had watched her nearly break down back in the apartment, her breaths coming in quick and shallow gasps as she fought to hold herself together. I knew she couldn’t bear to stay there a second longer. So I had brought her outside with the hope that the open air might calm her, give her room to breathe, and she might continue the talk if she needed to.

"I want to leave!" she demanded, her voice trembling with anger. But before she could take a step, I grabbed her hand, holding her firmly in place.

"You are not allowed to leave me," I said, my voice steady and determined. How could I let her walk away from me again? Especially now, when she was clearly struggling, her breaths were shallow and uneven. She wasn’t in any condition to go anywhere, and I wasn’t about to let her either

"You are my wife, and—" I started, but before I could finish, she yanked her hand out of my grasp as she glared at me sharply.

"Don’t you dare try to hold me back, Evander!" she snapped. There was fire in her eyes. But before she could take another step, her body wavered. In an instant she slumped forward, collapsing against me.
