Chapter 47: I Won’t Leave You Claire!
Susan’s POV
"What did I just do?" I whispered to myself, my nails dug into my palms until they bled. The pain in my hands was nothing compared to the hurt in my chest. Watching Evander leave with her so easily made me realize something. No matter what I did, no matter how hard I tried, I would never be important to him.
I stood there, shaking in anger as I tried to keep my feelings in check. My heart hurt, but I couldn’t let it show. Not now when he had taken Claire with him somewhere.
As I tried to leave, a few people entered the apartment with a stretcher, and before I could react, they gently but firmly tried to force me onto it.
"Miss, Mr. Kensington said we must take care of you and make sure no wound goes untreated," one of the ambulance workers said, looking at me with concern.
"What?" I blinked in surprise by what I heard. "Did he really say that?" I asked, narrowing my brows in disbelief.
"Well... it was his assistant who told us," the worker started to explain, but I quickly pushed them away, trying to leave, still feeling a mix of anger and frustration. How could he even say such words for me!
They calmly held me down and apologized softly. "We’re really sorry! We can’t lose our job. Please, just let us do our work."
I didn’t know how to feel. Part of me wanted to resist, but the other part felt so much pain that I had foolishly inflicted onto my body. With no choice left, I let them take me out of the apartment on the stretcher.
They took me to the ambulance, and before I knew it, we were on the road, heading to the hospital. I stared out the window as everything that had happened before started running in my mind.
Claire’s POV
I was completely shocked by the sudden turn of events. I never expected that my illness would hit me at such a moment, leaving me feeling helpless. I didn’t want to show any vulnerability in front of Evander, but here I was, unable to hide it.
Evander kept dragging me, his grip firm as we moved in and out of the elevator. I struggled to break free, fighting with everything I had. "Leave me! You rascal! Let go of me! I don’t want to go anywhere with you!" I shouted, but my words felt so weak, like they had no power.
I had only come here to check on Susan. That was all. But somehow, everything had gone out of control. Now, I was trapped with Evander— the person I had been desperately trying to hate. But how could I? I had loved him since I was too young to even understand the meaning of love.
How could I just hate him now? Even after everything he had done to me, I couldn’t bring myself to completely let go. So what was so different today? What made it so hard to break free from this love that had always made me feel so weak?
"I let you go once, Claire," Evander said in a steady and firm tone. We had reached the rooftop now, and I could feel his gaze on me, intense and unwavering. "I thought you didn’t care about me. But since you loved me... I have decided I won’t let you go again."
His words hit me harder than I expected. There was no anger in his tone, only a quiet resolve. As much as I hated it, a part of me couldn’t help but listen. I couldn’t help but feel something stir inside me again. However, I wasn’t going to let him do whatever he wished. No matter how much my heart was beating like a fool for him.
"How dare you!" I finally yanked my hand away from him, or maybe he let go— either way, I was free, but my anger burned too strongly. "Who the hell do you think you are, deciding things for me? I haven’t given you the right to do that!"
Evander’s gaze never wavered and was locked at me as he raised an eyebrow in amusement. "Remember, we are still married," he said in a mocking tone yet he seemed somehow calm.
"Hah!" I scoffed as I looked up at the sky, trying to hide my tears. "Or did you forget that you prepared the divorce papers for us? You cheated on me, and then you initiated the divorce!" I snapped as I couldn’t hold back.
"What! Divorce? What do you mean? What are you talking about!?" Evander asked in a confused tone as he looked into my eyes, trying to find answers.
For real? Is he fooling me? I saw those documents with my own eyes when I went to put the letter in his study!
The anger in my chest made it hard to breathe, and his words made me even angrier, I wanted to lash out, to slap him so badly for his arrogance. His actions had torn me apart, and now, standing here, it felt like all he could do was stand there all smug and detached about what I had been through. It made me sick.
I held myself back from slapping him, but I couldn’t stop myself from pushing him away, my hands slammed into his chest. "You treated me like a rag doll!" I spat, my voice shaky with anger. "Your family made a fool out of me; they made me work like a servant; even the maids laughed at me and bullied me.
"While your mistress always showed me my place from time to time. Do you really think these reasons were enough for me to ask for divorce? But I still held on to a sliver of hope— hope that you would come back home... to me and explain everything..."
Evander’s expression tightened as he stepped closer, grabbing my arms gently, but I felt no warmth in his touch, only betrayal after reminiscing about the past. I push him away as I once again slammed on his body, pushing him back as I continued.
"Explain that to me that Claire... I didn’t do anything wrong. I was just meeting her for work. You are the only woman in my life!" I said in a trembling tone as my whole body was shivering in anger. I didn’t know how I was holding myself back from collapse. "But you never came back home. You didn’t even talk to me properly, let alone explain anything about what was really happening."
"How could you doubt me, Claire! Were you not the one who never wanted me? Weren’t you the one who always hated me being near you and wanted me to stay away for you? Then how could you blame me for everything and what divorce paper you are talking about?" Evander glared at me as he held onto my hand, which was about to slam him back again.
