Chapter 49: Evander’s Intense Gaze!

Evander’s POV

Claire’s face was pale, and her breathing was shallow. She had pushed herself to the edge, pouring every ounce of anger and pain out, and now she had fallen unconscious in my arms. I held her close, feeling the weight of her pain, knowing I couldn’t let go—no matter how much anger or distance lay between us.

I looked down at her pale face, gently moving a few strands of hair away. My Claire—she looked so fragile. She was the only woman I had ever loved and the only one I would love for the rest of my life.

As I held her in my arms, guilt and worry flooded me. I didn’t fully understand what had happened, but it was clear she’d had some kind of panic attack. Her breathing had been shaky, and she was completely drained now.

Without wasting another second, I carried her to the car. She needed help, and I wasn’t taking any risks. I took her to the hospital and made sure they gave her something to calm her down. I just wanted her to rest without pain, so that when she woke up, maybe things would feel a little easier for her.

"How is she?" I asked the doctor, not taking my eyes off her frail, pale figure lying on the hospital bed.

"She is stable. It was a mild panic attack, Mr. Kensington," the doctor replied, a hint of hesitation in his voice. "And she needs her family to be by her side for the time being, as you are very well aware of her condition.

I frowned, trying to ignore his comment. Yes, I had studied medicine once; I had even been one of the best in the country. but that felt like a lifetime ago, something I had left far behind.

"When will she wake up?" I asked, brushing past his words as I needed to know when she would wake up.

"I can’t say exactly when," the doctor replied, "but she’s stable for now. She’s completely exhausted, so she’ll probably wake up after some rest."

I nodded, signaling for him to leave. Claire didn’t need any more strangers around her—she needed someone familiar who would stay by her side. And I was going to be that person for her and stay by her side, no matter what.

I settled back into the chair beside her bed, watching her breathe slowly; her face finally relaxed. It didn’t matter how long it took; I would wait for her to wake up.

Hours had passed, and my eyes were still locked on Claire, watching her with a mix of worry and hope. Suddenly, my phone rang, breaking the silence of the room. I grabbed it quickly, not wanting the noise to disturb Claire.

"Yes, Zaniel, what is it?" I asked in a low and cold tone.

"Boss, you are scheduled to meet Mr. Storme today, remember? It’s about the new investment in his project," Zaniel reminded me.

"Cancel it, or push it to another day. I am not leaving her here alone." I didn’t hesitate and replied.

I had made that mistake too many times before, leaving her alone, caught up in work, and thinking it could wait. But not this time. Claire needed me here, and I wasn’t going anywhere.

"Boss, is she really that important to you?" Zaniel asked, sounding surprised.

"Yes," I replied simply, not realizing how much this single word would stir things up in the days to come.

"I need you to handle something important for me," I added as I changed the topic, keeping my voice steady as I glanced at Claire, then moved to the window. I didn’t want her to hear my conversation and disturb her sleep.

Claire’s POV

I felt a dull ache in my head, but there was something else—a sense of being watched. I shifted a little in the bed, and then his phone rang, breaking the silence. Maybe if he could have stepped out, I would have had a chance to open my eyes and take in where I was finally.

I knew it was Evander watching over me. How could I not? I had always been able to sense him, even from miles away. His gaze was intense on me as if he wanted to imprint my image in his eyes forever!

But right now, I silently wished he would leave or at least look away, give me a moment to gather myself. Even though he was on the call, I could feel his eyes still on me as his attention was unwavering.

After a moment, he moved slightly away from the bed, as if trying to keep his words private while giving his secretary some special instructions. But the room was so quiet, and I could still hear him clearly.

"Look into this matter quietly," Evander ordered. "I need to know who sent me those divorce papers and how they ended up in my study."

What? He didn’t put them there? My mind raced as I tried to make sense of it. If it wasn’t him, then who had set this up? My eyes opened in surprise, as I took in the luxury hospital room around me.

Evander’s voice turned colder. "And keep that woman out of sight. My patience with her is wearing thin— she needs to understand her place."

I couldn’t hear what Zaniel said on the other end, but Evander’s response was firm. "No, I am not going anywhere today. I don’t care what comes up. And if you dare call me again... trust me, Zaniel, I won’t be forgiving."

What the hell! Was he not planning to leave? He seemed determined to stay by my side, and his words left me more confused than ever.

I shot him a deadly glare as if I could pierce him with my eyes alone. But before I knew it, he had already turned toward me. He seemed to have sensed my eyes on him and ended the call quickly. I could tell Zaniel was still saying something, but Evander didn’t seem to care.

"Claire! You are awake?" Evander said as his voice was filled with concern. He rushed over to me. "Are you okay? Is there any pain? Are you calm now?"

Fuck!

I cursed under my breath and pinched myself to see if I was dreaming. I couldn’t believe it— this was the same man who had made my life a mess. This was the first time I had ever heard him speak so gently, like this. He never spoke like that, not even with little Eliam.

I didn’t answer any of his questions; instead, I scoffed at him. "What are you planning now?" I asked, narrowing my eyes. "If you are thinking of locking me up in that mansion again... I won’t let you!"

Before I could finish, Evander interrupted me. To my surprise, he stepped forward and hugged me tightly, as if his life depended on it. The sudden warmth of his embrace caught me off guard, leaving me momentarily speechless.

****

What will happen now? Do you think Claire will try to find out what Evander was talking about on the call, or will she just ignore it and go on with her life? And what do you think Zaniel is about to stir up unknowingly?
