Chapter 147: How Dare He!

Claire’s POV

My whole body trembled as Evander left to open the door. My heart raced, not from fear but from the lingering heat of his kiss. His firm yet desperate touch awakened feelings I had almost buried deep inside me long ago.

I pressed my fingers to my lips, still tingling from its intensity. It wasn’t just a kiss—it was a storm, raw and unrestrained like he had poured every unspoken word, every hidden emotion, into that single moment. It left me shaken and... I wanted more shamelessly.

I wanted to be angry, to tell myself it was wrong. But deep down, I couldn’t deny the control he had over me. Evander wasn’t just any man. He was complicated, flawed, and so achingly human. Yet he made me feel alive and mattered like I wasn’t just someone passing through his life.

As I stood there, trying to gather my thoughts, I caught sight of my reflection in the mirror. My cheeks were flushed, and my eyes were wide with confusion. "What’s happening to me?" I whispered to myself.

I’d told myself I would keep my distance and stay guarded, but his kiss broke through every wall I had built. It wasn’t just his lips —it was the way he looked at me before he pulled away, the way he held back even though I knew he wanted to stay close.

I finally changed into the clothes the hotel had provided. It was a simple, baggy T-shirt and loose trousers—not exactly my size, but at least they included a belt to make the fit manageable.

My thoughts kept circling back to Evander, to his kiss, to the way his eyes had burned with something deeper than desire.

"Get it together, Claire," I whispered to myself. But no matter how much I tried to push the thoughts aside, they kept creeping back.

As I exited the washroom, I heard someone’s voice, and I was sure it was the doctor.

"Really? Why not let me introduce you to a hot and sexy girl to calm you down? Might be faster than the meds." He said and Evander growled.

"Do you want to die, Caspian!?"

"What’s wrong with that?" the other person chimed in. "You are single and suffering! Isn’t it good to have some company? Maybe she could—" Before he could finish his ridiculous suggestion, I appeared in the room.

I couldn’t believe the way this man—Caspian—was speaking. His ridiculous suggestion was practically pressuring my husband to have an affair and that made my blood boil.

How dare he!

I clenched my fists, ready to throw him out of the room, but I hesitated. Evander needed him for the cure, and his condition was far more important than my anger at the moment. Still, that didn’t mean I would let this slide.

"Woah!" Caspian’s eyes widened as I stepped closer, his shock evident. "You already have such a beauty by your side! Now I can tell why you were able to hold on for so long!"

My cheeks heated, not from embarrassment but from growing fury. He continued, pacing back and forth around me with exaggerated gestures, like he was putting on some sort of twisted performance.

"No wonder you didn’t want anyone else around! I can tell!" he exclaimed dramatically. "Why not use her? If you already have her by your side, why the hell did you disturb me?"

He turned his glare toward Evander. "Either way... your wife has already left you all alone to suffer! What’s the use of being abstinent for so long?"

I was seething now. How dare he make such presumptuous and disgusting remarks about our relationship? He didn’t know anything about us, and yet he had the audacity to talk like this?

But as I stared at him, something stuck at the back of my mind. There was something familiar about Caspian, though I couldn’t tell. No matter how hard I tried to recall, I couldn’t figure out where I had seen him before.

"Mister, do I—" I started, wanting to ask him, but Evander cut me off before I could say more.

"Caspian! Do not cross your bounds!" Evander growled, his voice sharp and laced with anger. His eyes burned as he glared at Caspian, who had the nerve to look amused by the situation.

"Stay within your limits, and do not insult my wife!" Evander’s voice echoed through the room, firm and commanding.

Caspian raised his hands in mock surrender, an exaggerated grin plastered on his face. "Alright, alright! No need to get so defensive, lover boy. I was just trying to lighten the mood."

I glared at him, my fury barely contained. "If you are here to help, then do your job. Otherwise, you can leave," I snapped, my tone colder than I intended.

Caspian chuckled, clearly unfazed, but he finally turned his attention back to Evander. "Fine, let’s get this over with. But seriously, man, you are no fun."

Evander’s jaw tightened, and I could feel that he was still suffering. I stepped closer to his side, placing a hand on his arm to steady him, silently telling him I was there for him no matter what.

This Caspian might have been here to help, but he had crossed a line. And I wasn’t going to forget it.

"Wait!" Caspian’s voice suddenly cut through the tension in the room. His eyes widened in disbelief, and he looked at us in shock. "Did I just hear you call her your wife!?"

Evander let out an exasperated sigh, rolling his eyes as he replied, "Did you not hear me the first time?"

Caspian looked genuinely stunned. His gaze flicked between Evander and me, as though trying to piece together a puzzle that didn’t make sense to him. "So... I mean... I heard your wife left you, but how come..." He stammered, trailing off awkwardly. His confusion was almost palpable.

"I... I didn’t run away!" The words escaped me before I could stop them. My voice shook with a mixture of frustration and anger bubbling to the surface. "I was sick, and I was in the U.S.! That’s why I wasn’t here!"
