Chapter 148: Evander Will Be Fine

Chapter 148: Evander Will Be Fine

Claire’s POV

I hated this narrative that everyone thought I had abandoned Evander. It stung every time I heard it, as if my absence had erased everything we had shared. I clenched my fists, struggling to keep my emotions in check.

Caspian blinked at me, clearly startled by my outburst. "Oh," he muttered, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. "I didn’t know that part..."

"You didn’t need to know," Evander snapped, his tone sharp and defensive. He came between us like a shield. "What happened between us is none of your business."

Caspian raised his hands in mock surrender, his signature smirk returning. "Alright, alright! No need to bite my head off. I was just curious. But hey," he added, his grin widening slightly, "this actually makes more sense now."

"What makes sense?" I asked, narrowing my eyes at him. His cryptic comment was irritating, and I wasn’t in the mood for games.

Caspian shrugged, his expression turning uncharacteristically thoughtful. "About why were you so protective of her earlier? And why you didn’t... you know, take my suggestion."

My face flushed, and I instinctively glanced at Evander, whose jaw tightened at Caspian’s insinuation.

"You are unbelievable," I muttered, shaking my head. "You have no idea what you are talking about."

Caspian laughed; the sound was light but tinged with nervous energy. "Hey, don’t get me wrong. I respect it, alright? Love is not something you see every day. So, good for you two." He said and I could see the sadness in his eyes with as those words came out of his mouth.

Evander glared at him, clearly unimpressed, but I noticed his shoulders relax slightly. He reached for my hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze, silently grounding me.

"Let’s just focus on the reason you are here," Evander said firmly, steering the conversation back to the matter at hand.

Caspian nodded, finally dropping his playful demeanor. "Fine. But for the record," he added with a sly grin, "this is the most exciting call I have had in weeks."

I rolled my eyes, but a small smile tugged at my lips despite myself. Caspian might have been frustrating, but at least now the air felt a little lighter.

"I have administered the antidote; it might make him feel dizzy and could cause him to pass out," Caspian explained, his tone calm yet firm. He turned to me with a more serious expression. "Please take care of him. He might develop a high fever, so keep his head cool with a wet cloth."

"Sure," I replied politely, rising to my feet. "Thank you so much for coming on such short notice."

Before Caspian could respond, Evander’s weak voice interrupted. "Do... do not thank that ra... rascal! He... he doesn’t deserve it!" His words slurred, and before I could react, his body went limp as he fell unconscious.

"Evander!" I screamed, my heart pounding as fear gripped me. I rushed to his side, my hands trembling as I was worried sick. "What’s happening to him!?" My voice cracked with panic, and a sharp pang shot through my chest. The sight of him like this terrified me so much that my knees nearly gave out beneath me.

"Mrs. Kensington! Please calm down," Caspian urged, his tone softer now as he gestured for me to sit. "Take a deep breath and sit down. He is not in danger. He just passed out."

I did as he said, sinking into the chair beside the bed, though my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. "But he looks so pale... What’s wrong with him?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

Caspian kneeled beside Evander, checking his pulse and temperature before speaking. "I warned you earlier—he is not fully fine yet. His body is reacting to the antidote, and he is still fighting off the effects of the drug. The dosage he inhaled was incredibly high. Honestly," he added with a shake of his head, "it’s a miracle he managed to hold out this long."

My eyes widened as I processed his words. "But he seemed okay earlier... at least a little better. I mean, the cold water seemed to help."

"It did help, to some extent," Caspian admitted, his voice laced with concern. "Cooling down his body prevented things from getting worse, but it wasn’t enough to neutralize everything. The antidote will help him recover, but it’s going to take time. Right now, his body is going through the process of flushing out the toxins, which is why he fainted."

I nodded slowly, trying to steady my breathing. "What can I do to help him?"

Caspian looked at me with a reassuring smile. "Keep him comfortable. Make sure his head stays cool, especially if his fever spikes. Change the cloth frequently and keep the room quiet. He will need rest, and so will you," he added pointedly.

"But—" I began to protest.

"No buts," Caspian interrupted firmly. "You can’t take care of him if you are ruining your health like this. Trust me, Mrs. Kensington, he is strong. He will pull through this. Just give him time."

I swallowed hard, still uneasy but grateful for Caspian’s reassurance. "Thank you, Doctor," I said, my voice steadier now.

"Don’t thank me yet," Caspian quipped with a small grin as he gathered his things. "Save it for when he is up and complaining about me again."

Despite the situation, I found myself smiling faintly at his attempt to lighten the mood. As Caspian left, I turned back to Evander, brushing a damp strand of hair from his forehead. His face was flushed, and his breathing was shallow but steady.

"I am here, Evander," I whispered, clutching his hand tightly. "You are going to be okay."

We were still taking care of Evander when Damian arrived. He seemed to have found someone as I could see his red knuckles and messy hair, which made me worried, but before I could say anything, he came forth and looked at Caspian, giving Caspian a worried look.
