Chapter 105: What Is The Meaning Of This?

Evander’s POV

When Claire proudly declared in front of everyone that I was her husband, something inside me shifted. My heart raced uncontrollably, pounding so hard I thought it might burst. For a moment, the room, the tension, and even the prying eyes of strangers faded away.

I couldn’t take my eyes off her. The way she stood there, fierce and unwavering, defending us—defending me—ignited something raw within me. It wasn’t just pride; it was something deeper that I almost buried inside me, but now... after her appearance, it started to come out once again.

I wanted to grab her, pull her into my arms, and take her far away from this mess. To hold her, to kiss her until neither of us could breathe until the world around us no longer mattered.

For the first time in my life, I felt a sense of belonging—real, tangible, and undeniable. It was as if she had placed a missing piece into my soul, one I didn’t even know I lacked. I belonged to her, and in some strange, inexplicable way, I knew I belonged with her.

But even as the warmth of that realization washed over me, a flicker of doubt remained. I had a long way to go. There was still so much to prove to her, so much to mend. My mistakes, my coldness, the walls I had built—none of them could be undone with a single moment.

Still, for now, I held onto the image of Claire standing tall, unwavering. She was my anchor in the storm, and I vowed silently to never let her down again.

However, the next word of Martha made me want to strangle her as I shifted in my place, but Claire stopped me, gesturing me not to take any action.

Claire’s POV

"Why don’t you ask my dear mother-in-law if I am my husband’s wife or not?" I said, stepping in front of Evander and placing a hand on his chest to stop him from saying more. My voice was calm, but I made sure every word hit like a sharp blade.

Martha and the other ladies shifted their focus to Gloria, whose expression faltered for a moment. But then, as if regaining her footing, she forced an awkward smile. "Well," she began, her tone sweet but dripping with malice, "they are divorced, if you would like to know the truth." Her awkward smile twisted into a triumphant and evil grin.

Her words pierced through me like a dagger. I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms as I fought to keep my composure. Divorced. The word echoed in my mind, threatening to pull me back to the dark place I had clawed my way out of. She had torn us apart once, driven a wedge so deep that it nearly broke me beyond repair.

But not this time.

I straightened my posture and forced a calm, icy smile onto my face. "Really, Gloria?" I said, my voice steady but carrying the weight of every ounce of pain and determination I felt. "That’s the truth you want them to believe?"

Her grin faltered for just a fraction of a second, but I caught it. Good. She wasn’t as confident as she pretended to be.

"You may have succeeded in the past," I continued, my voice unwavering, "but this time, I am not the weak, broken woman you thought you could crush. This time, I will make sure you face the consequences of every lie, every scheme, and every drop of pain you have caused us."

I turned to the ladies from the NGO, my tone softening as I addressed them. "If you truly care about justice and the well-being of children, I suggest you dig deeper into this matter before taking sides. Because the truth is far uglier than Gloria’s polished lies."

Evander remained silent beside me, his presence steady and strong, but I could feel the tension radiating from him. He didn’t interrupt, didn’t try to take over. This was my battle as much as it was his, but he was making a statement that he was there for me.

We were still talking when Zaniel strode into the mansion, flanked by a team of lawyers. The sheer number of them must have been intimidating enough for the guards to let them through without a word of protest.

"Forgive me, boss!" Zaniel said, bowing slightly toward Evander before turning to me with a look of genuine regret. "Greetings, Madam. I apologize for my delay. I deeply regret that you had to endure this."

I flinched at the way he addressed me, as his tone was firm yet filled with respect, and his arrival felt like a shift in the atmosphere. The tension in the room thickened, and Gloria’s confident smirk wavered slightly as her gaze swept over the group of lawyers standing behind Zaniel.

"It’s about time," Evander said in a cold, measured voice, his eyes never leaving Gloria.

I nodded at Zaniel, brushing away any signs of vulnerability from moments ago. "Thank you, Zaniel," I said calmly. "Your timing is perfect. We were just about to get some clarity on certain matters."

Zaniel stepped forward, placing a thick folder of documents on the table with a decisive thud. "These are the legal papers you requested, boss," he said, glancing between Evander and me. "Everything is in place to ensure that justice is served."

Gloria’s expression darkened, her earlier confidence replaced with unease. "What is the meaning of this?" she demanded, her voice laced with nervous anger.

Evander’s gaze hardened. "It means you don’t hold the power you think you do, Gloria. Every lie, every misstep—you will answer for it now."

I stood by Evander’s side, my determination unwavering. "And if you think you can take anything or anyone away from me again," I said, my voice firm yet calm, "you will be solely mistaken."

The presence of the lawyers, combined with our resolve, left no room for doubt. Gloria’s grip on the situation was slipping, and for the first time, I felt the tides turning in our favor.
