Chapter 104: I’m Claire Kensington!!

Evander’s POV

My patience was already hanging by a thread as the guards outside dared to keep me from entering my own mansion. But the sight of Claire at Gloria’s feet? That was the final spark to the wildfire of anger I could barely contain.

I strode forward, scooping Claire into my warm embrace. Her trembling body pressed against mine, but her tears didn’t cloud her sharp mind. She was playing her part well, drawing attention exactly where it was needed.

I turned to Gloria, my voice as cold as ice. "If you think for a second that you will get away with this, you are gravely mistaken," I said, my tone laced with a quiet danger that made even the guards flinch.

Claire’s act was working. The ladies from the NGO were visibly uneasy, exchanging glances among themselves. One of them, probably the person in charge, stepped forward.

"Let’s come inside and talk," she said, gesturing for us to follow.

As we entered, I couldn’t miss the way Claire glanced at Gloria, a sharp glare followed by a smirk that didn’t escape my notice. She was playing the long game, and I would back her every step of the way.

We were seated in the lounge, the tension palpable. The woman who had spoken earlier extended a card across the table toward me. "Here," she said. "I am Martha, the head of the NGO that ensures the welfare of children in neglectful environments."

Her words made my blood boil, but I kept my face impassive and cold. I didn’t even take a glance at the card, leaving it untouched on the table.

"I don’t need your introduction," I said, my voice sharp, cutting through the heavy silence like a blade. My eyes locked onto hers, unyielding. "What I need is my son. If this woman," I said, gesturing toward Gloria with a flick of my hand, "who calls herself my mother, has taken him from me; then she would better return him immediately."

I leaned forward slightly, my tone dropping to a dangerous level. "And if she doesn’t, I will not hesitate to take legal action. Against her. Against you. Against your entire NGO."

Martha visibly stiffened under my gaze; her professional demeanor faltered a little. "Mr. Kensington," she began cautiously, but I cut her off.

"No," I snapped. "Don’t ’Mr. Kensington’ me. You not only trespassed on my property but also took my child without my consent. You have overstepped in ways you can’t even begin to understand."

The silence in the room was deafening. Even Gloria seemed momentarily at a loss for words.

"This isn’t just a warning," I added, standing to my full height, towering over Martha and the others. "It’s a promise. You return my son, or you will find yourselves facing a storm you can’t handle."

Claire reached for my hand, grounding me before my fury could spiral further. Her touch was gentle, but the resolve in her eyes matched my own.

"Evander," she said softly, her voice soothing yet firm, "let’s hear what they have to say first."

For her, I had to rein it in. But the fire in my chest remained, ready to ignite at a moment’s notice.

Claire’s POV

I watched Gloria with quiet satisfaction as the tension on her face grew. It was gratifying, but I couldn’t let Evander’s fiery temper undo the plan I had so carefully crafted.

"Please forgive my husband," I said in a calm, polite tone, reaching for the visiting card Martha had extended earlier. My fingers brushed against it delicately as I picked it up, studying it briefly. I wiped the remaining tears from my face, softening my expression into one of calm yet composed grief.

"So, Madam Martha," I began, my voice steady, "did you confirm with us directly, or conduct any sort of survey, before taking our son? Or," I paused, letting my gaze sweep toward Gloria, "did my mother-in-law bribe you to take such drastic action without consulting us?"

Martha’s expression shifted, her eyes narrowing as if she were trying to find out which one was my true face. It was as if she wanted to say, Weren’t you just crying moments ago? And now you are making sense?

"What’s the need for such formalities?" Martha finally said, her tone dismissive. "From what I was told, Mr. Evander doesn’t even have a wife! And even if he does... it’s certainly not you!"

My brows shot up in mock surprise, a small smirk threatening to tug at the corners of my lips. "Oh?" I asked, tilting my head slightly. "And who, may I ask, who told you that?" My voice was sharp yet composed, cutting through her assumptions like a blade.

Martha stiffened, clearly caught off guard by my directness. "Well, the information we received—"

"—was wrong," I interjected firmly. "I am Claire Kensington, Evander Kensington’s lawful wife. And I can’t help but notice how often I am hearing baseless claims about my life from complete strangers. Tell me, Madam Martha, are you in the habit of acting on hearsay without verifying the facts?"

Gloria shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her unease palpable as my words cut through the tension. I glanced at her briefly, ensuring she understood I wasn’t done with her yet.

"You see," I continued, placing the card back on the table with deliberate precision, "this isn’t just about taking a child from his parents. It’s about accountability. If you truly work for the welfare of children, shouldn’t the first step always be confirming their safety within their family before taking them away?"

Martha’s lips pressed into a thin line, her earlier confidence beginning to falter.

Evander, who had remained silent during my exchange, stepped forward, his presence commanding. His cold, dangerous aura only amplified the weight of my words.

"You have made a mistake," I added, my tone calm but resolute. "And now, it’s time for you to fix it."

"Sure," Martha replied. "But how can you prove that you are his wife?"
