Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Tax (I)

Alex didn’t try to deny it. He kept his smile and nodded, "Yes, for a year, we will sleep in the same bed together."

Eve felt that there was something strange with that statement, as if he was just trying to appease her.

But she had no more energy to argue with him. She turned to face him and rested on his arm as usual and said, "Go to sleep now, it’s not healthy if you don’t sleep past midnight."

"Mm," Alex gently tucked the hair strands covering her cheeks behind her ears, so he could see her sleeping face clearer. "You are beautiful, Evelyn."

Eve’s cheeks grew hot again. She brushed his hands off and muttered, "Just go to sleep, will you? I have to wake up early tomorrow."

"Alright, alright," Alex gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Good night, Sweetheart."

Alex watched as Eve’s car drove out of the driveway. He sipped his morning coffee and commented, "Sometimes, I don’t understand why you are so self-disciplined, Eve. Nobody would punish you if you’re late anyway."

Nevertheless, Alex still admired Eve for her perseverance. To follow such a strict schedule must’ve been exhausting.

He returned to his seat in his study, and took out the documents he had prepared beforehand. It was one of Roger’s secrets that would put him in a very difficult situation.

Alex didn’t like to use this kind of method unless it was really necessary, but since his uncle dared to harm his beloved, he had to do something.

"I was caught off guard before and left Eve in distress because of the leak. I don’t want that to happen again," Alex told himself before he called his uncle.

Roger was still on his bed in the morning, with Nora on the other side of the bed, resting on his chest as they watched the morning show.

He frowned when his phone rang all of a sudden, "Why would someone call so early in the morning? Do they not know how early this is?"

Nora chuckled, "Pick it up. Who knows? It might be my husband. Maybe he wants to give you a project or something."

"Hugh? Hah, the only thing he will give me is a headache. You should’ve told him to stop ordering me around. I’m not his slave," Roger complained.

"You and I know that’s impossible. That man will never forgive me after he caught me red-handed years ago," Nora shrugged. "I also don’t understand what’s going on in his mind. Messing around in this circle is not a big deal, right? Why would he get so worked up over a petty affair?"

"I don’t understand either," Roger sighed. He checked his phone and held his breath when he saw the caller ID.

"Who is it? Is it really Hugh?" Nora asked out of curiosity.

"No, it’s your son," Roger replied. "What’s the deal he has to call me so early in the morning? Is he going to punch me through the screen?"

"Oh, don’t be such a worrywart. Maybe my son just wants to apologize after he punched you in the stomach," Nora said. "Go on, pick up the call."

Roger hesitated for a second, but as his phone kept ringing, he decided to accept the call.

"Why do you need to call me so early in the morning?" Roger asked straight to the point.

"Morning, Uncle. It’s almost eight, so it’s not so early in the morning," Alex corrected casually, while his eyes were screening through the document in his hand. He had a malicious smirk as he said, "I just want to know if you’re taking me seriously after our last meeting in your office."

"Oh, that—" Roger already put the phone on speaker, so Nora could listen to her son. They looked at each other before Nora grinned and nodded. Thus, Roger replied, "It’s all in Pierre’s hand. I have no control over it. If you want to stop him, then try to find him and slap him in the face, will you?"

Alex knew that Roger would never admit that he was the one piloting Pierre the whole time. It was far easier to just let Pierre take the blame.

But with this secret on the line, he knew damn well this crooked fat man would admit his sin eventually.

"Find him, then. Aren’t you his father that he looks up to?"

"Oh no, that kid is already a grown-up. He won’t listen to his old man anymore," Roger sighed. "You should’ve known this since you also refuse to listen to your father."

Alex found it funny that his uncle dared to compare him to Pierre, but he kept his head cool, and said, "What I said just now is not a question, it’s an order. You need to find your son and bring him right in front of me, or else..."

"Or else what? Are you going to punch your uncle again? Alex, if you keep attacking me like that, I might have to get hospitalized, and your father won’t be too pleased knowing that his son punched his uncle too hard, right?" Roger said full of woe, but he was smiling the whole time, and Nora was giggling on the phone.

Alex didn’t know that the woman next to Roger right now was his own mother, he thought it was just a random girl that Roger brought home to spend the night with. Thus, he didn’t pay it no mind, "Uncle, do you remember to pay your tax accordingly?"

The smile on Roger’s face vanished instantly, "What do you mean? Of course, I’ve always reported the company income and paid the tax accordingly."

"Is that so? Then I wonder about this piece of paper in my hand. I can see that you’ve been lying about the company’s report and did a few tax evasions here and there since 2014," Alex whistled out of muse. "Since ten years ago, huh? I wonder how much you have to pay the tax plus the fine. It would put a big dent in your company’s finances, right?"
