Chapter 79: Chapter 79: A Sinner’s Confession
Eve raised her brow and joked, "I didn’t know Mr. Langford could be so callous."
"You can’t survive in this environment without being a little callous at times," Alex smiled mysteriously. "I’ve saved enough secrets for each of them to continue controlling them, making sure every family member becomes a functional cog in the machine."
Eve was not surprised that Alex was doing this. She might not understand the complicated relationships in his family, but she too, had a sin regarding her mother.
Since both of them were sinners, she had no right to judge his moral compass.
"Though, are you sure about this? I assume those secrets will be more useful in the future when you are in a difficult situation," Eve asked.
"You are in that difficult situation right now, though," Alex replied. ’And you are half of me, anything bad that happens to you will hurt me even more,’ he added in his heart.
"Just... make sure not to go too far, alright? I know we have a deal, but I still won’t let you harm yourself because of this," Eve sternly warned. "I am capable of taking care of myself."
...
Alex said nothing, but his gaze slowly went down to her flat stomach, signaling to Eve that he wouldn’t allow anything bad to happen to her once she was pregnant with their child.
Eve’s cheeks reddened. She stood up from her chair and said, "I-I’ll take a shower. It’s been a long day, and I feel sticky...due to sweat!"
Alex chuckled as he saw Eve scurry out of the dining hall.
He leaned back on the chair, staring at the half-empty seafood stew in front of him. This was the first time she finally cooked dinner for him, and he was more than happy knowing that he could maintain this harmony between them forever.
"You’re thinking that using these secrets to protect you will cost me. But Sweetheart, the biggest loss I’ve ever experienced in life was losing you."

Eve and Alex lay side by side on the bed. They went to bed earlier than yesterday, and though Eve was already somewhat sleepy before, her eyes were wide open the moment Alex walked in and joined her in bed.
They stared at the ceiling in serenity for a while until Alex decided to break the silence, "I am a very jealous man, Eve."
Eve glanced at him and asked, "What’s with that sudden confession? Do you think I don’t know that? Even when we were still together back then, I have always known that you’re a jealous man."
Alex smiled, "Yes, I’ve always been a jealous man. But I know not to push your buttons back then, so I keep it low-key and do things behind your back to make sure that we stay together."
He didn’t know why he was confessing to all this, but his chest was burning with fury. It felt stuffy and excruciating when he realized that Eve was meeting with Pierre behind his back.
He knew he should’ve assumed the best from Eve since Evelyn wasn’t someone whose heart would be swayed so easily.
Yet, he still felt restless, and his mind began to fall into a dark pit, filled with crazy fantasies of what he should do to keep her around.
He was like a man who slowly drowned and desperately tried to grab onto her like she was his only lifeline.
Whether she could save him or not, that wasn’t his worry. He didn’t mind if they drowned, at least they could drown together.
He was teetering at the edge of insanity whenever it was about Eve, but this woman always knew how to keep him in check, and to clear out his worries in an instant.
"Whenever you’re close to another man, I feel like I’m about to combust, and I can’t help myself," Alex confessed. He slowly reached to grab Eve’s hand and kissed it. "So, please, don’t try to hide anything from me, Sweetheart. It hurts me when you’re not being honest."
...
"I don’t understand you, Alex," Eve said. "You demand me to be honest, but you... for five years, you lied to me. Why am I getting the short end of the stick in this relationship?"
"Because I am a selfish scumbag. I’m doing everything I can to keep you by my side," Alex admitted. He turned to face her and added, "Yes, I’ve always been this callous, Evelyn. I’m not that kind-hearted broke boy you dated for five years."
...
Listening to his confessions made Eve’s heart feel strange. It felt unfair to her because she had been resenting Alex for a long time due to his lies.
Whether it was to keep her around or for whatever reason, he was still lying to her, and it was not something she could forgive. At least not for a long time.
"I still won’t forgive you for what you’ve done, Alex," Eve said firmly. She didn’t want to be swayed by his confession, even if it sounded sweet.
Alex smiled, "I know that. That’s why I never ask for forgiveness, since I know you all too well, Evelyn."
"Then why are you suddenly confessing about all this?" Eve asked.
"I just want to get it out of my chest. I was furious when I found out that you met with that bastard," Alex said. "But I’m also glad that you didn’t yell at me right now, at least. I still remember how bad it was when we broke up."
"I don’t have the energy anymore, Alex. I still, and will continue to resent you, but I have no strength to yell at you anymore," Eve muttered. "Especially in this situation. It’ll be weird to yell at you when we’re sharing a bed, right?"
Alex chuckled, "I guess so. It’s nice that we can do this again."
"For a year, that is," Eve added to clarify her stance. It was, in the end, just a business deal between them.
