Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Make Her A Mistress

For Hugh, the family background was the most important above all else when finding a wife.

She could have a bad habit or maybe wasn’t as pretty, but her family background would guarantee a proper standing in their society, separated from the common folks out there.

For a family like the Langfords, they didn’t need to find someone crazy rich with an affluent background to marry, because they were already filthy rich themselves.

But they still needed to find a wife with a proper family background, so they wouldn’t be ridiculed.

That rule also applied to Alex, who didn’t seem to be bothered listening to his father right now.

"Also, you’re not the one to give me a sermon about finding the right woman with the proper background. That bitch I have to call mother came from a proper affluent family, and look what happened in the end," Alex mocked. "You should’ve reflected on yourself first before giving me advice."

Hugh went silent after that, not knowing what to say to his son.

It was true that his marriage was a disaster, but he believed that he still had the right to advise his son.

"That’s why I’m telling you to leave that woman, Alexander. Your mother has an affluent background and still ends up crazy, let alone a child without a proper family. Evelyn Carpenter has no father figure and has a drug addict and hooker of a mother. She hasn’t had the proper education since she was young. Do you think that kind of woman will be a good mother for your children?" Hugh scolded. "If you want to keep her around, then marry a noblewoman of my choice, and keep her as a mistress. It’s normalized in our society."

Alex’s gaze turned cold instantly, "If you think that I will turn the only woman I’ve ever fallen in love with to be a mistress, then you’ve gone senile, Dad. We’re done with this conversation."

Alex turned around and walked past Miranda.

Miranda turned her head to follow the Young Master, before turning her worried gaze towards Hugh Langford, waiting for him to say something to stop the Young Master from leaving.

But Hugh stayed silent. He smoked his cigar and puffed out the smoke to relax.

Alex slammed the door shut, and once he left, Miranda couldn’t help but ask, "S-sir, are you sure you don’t want me to call him back? I don’t think ending the conversation like this is productive, and it’ll only make him even angrier than before."

"Let him be. I already said what needed to be said," Hugh replied. "He’s an adult, and there’s nothing I can do if he doesn’t want to listen."

"But, Sir, even with this background, it’s hard to deny that Evelyn Carpenter is a good woman. She defies all odds and rises to the top all by herself," Miranda commented. She sighed as she thought this woman must’ve had a very difficult life growing up. "It’s a shame that she doesn’t have a proper family."

Hugh had a thin smile as he gazed at Los Angeles skyscrapers. He might not be happy that Alex chose that woman instead of someone he handpicked that would suit their family image.

But he was also impressed by how strong-willed Alex was when it came to his love.

"Miranda, do you remember how much of a waste he was as a kid?" Hugh mentioned.

"Young Master? Mm... he was lacking in his study, yes. But it wasn’t because he is stupid," Miranda wanted to say that most of Alex’s problems as a child were because of his abusive mother, Nora Langford. But she knew that Hugh wouldn’t like hearing that cold, hard truth.

"He’s never stupid. He’s still capable of maintaining his grade at the bare minimum possible just to avoid punishment," Hugh mentioned. "My son lacked ambition before. He didn’t care about anything in life or even if the world burns tomorrow. Until he met that woman."

"That woman, Evelyn Carpenter, is his ambition. He wants to start a family with her and only her despite her background, and he doesn’t even bother to entertain my words anymore," Hugh added. "He has truly grown."

Miranda clenched the thick documents in her hands. She had been told by the Old Master to prepare all the documents necessary to transfer all of the ownership of the Langford estate to Alexander Langford right here, right now, if he was willing to give up on Evelyn.

She was also told to prepare a special contract, in which Alex would be forced to renounce his status as the heir of the Langford family if he insisted on staying with Evelyn.

Fortunately, she didn’t need to show the Young Master any of these documents, because deep down, she also wished that Alex would find the right woman to marry and stayed together until one of them passed.

Miranda had witnessed how miserable Alex lived when he was young, especially under his father’s ignorance and his mother’s insanity.

"Sir, if... if I am allowed to say anything about this problem, I wish that you’d just let him be. Young Master is an adult now, and he is pretty capable even without the Langford estate," Miranda said. "I think you already know that the Langford estate and businesses need him more than the other way around."

"I am letting him be, for now," Hugh said. "He can do whatever with that woman. I have no plan to interfere, but I also don’t plan to help them if they are in trouble."

Hugh turned his head to stare at Miranda, "That boy already spent ten million dollars to save that woman. I’m sure he will have to sacrifice more than just money to keep her around."

"It’s a relationship doomed from the start. Either my son will get burned out after sacrificing so much for that woman, or Evelyn will leave because she knows she’s hurting him just by staying around him."
