Alex nodded. He has no intention of hiding that information.
"That is true. I made a series of calls here and there to pay for all the financial damage caused by the leaked document. I also called the Honor company’s CEO personally and asked—no, demand him to apologize to you. Has he made a call to you and apologized personally?" Alex asked firmly as if he didn’t just flip the Honor company upside down for this.
"I don’t understand, Alex."
"About what? All I did was to pay for the damage. It was as easy as a few phone calls while I was sitting here, drinking my wine," Alex said calmly.
The way he casually talked about this topic made Eve feel even more conflicted. She was ready to blast him for interfering too much with her personal matters, but he made it as if it was truly something trivial.
Eve opened her mouth for a second but closed it again as she didn’t know what to say right now. Should she thank him for it? Or should she say that she was ready to compensate for him?
However, Alex quickly interrupted her line of thought;
"Why don’t we have dinner now? I’ve cooked for us since you came home late today," Alex suggested as he got up from his seat. He walked past Eve, heading to the dining hall.
Eve turned around to look at his back, and asked, "What do you want as compensation for our business contract?"
"Business contract?" Alex halted his step. He turned to face her and frowned, "What do you mean by that?"
"You and I have that unspoken contract in which you’ll help me to get revenge against Pierre, but that’s about it. I’ve never agreed about you helping me financially," Eve said professionally, and Alex was offended by that.
True, he was the one who used that ’business deal’ to make sure she’d stay by his side. But all of his actions so far were based on his own volition. There was nothing business-like in all of his actions, as what he did was simply illogical.
Losing millions of dollars in one night to save his beloved? Was that logical from a business standpoint? Alex was a savvy businessman at heart, so he knew damn well he wouldn’t do the same to other people on Earth except for Eve.
Despite his diminishing patience, he still tried to reason with Eve, who was upset about his action.
"I told you that I’d save your agency as long as you’re willing to bear my children. Did you forget about that?"
"B-but this is different. We’re talking about millions of dollars down the drain for no good reason. Why’d you be stupid enough to do that?!"
Alex’s lips thinned.
"I don’t want you to overwork yourself for three to six months straight. That’s inhumane. The money isn’t much for my standard, and not worth six months of overworking yourself to death," Alex replied calmly, but there was a suppressive tone in his voice, making sure that Eve knew he was annoyed by her question.
"Still, what you did is stupid. You should’ve saved that money, and I don’t mind working overtime for six months, I—"
"Oh, will you shut up for a second?" Alex said harshly, and Eve was silenced as this was the first time Alex ever said something harsh to her. "You keep calling me stupid for paying for that financial damage. Didn’t I tell you that I will save you as long as you’re by my side?"
"B-but... our business contract..." Eve muttered weakly. "I-I just don’t want you to waste your money on me. It’s stupid..."
Alex gritted his teeth.
Of course, he always lost in an argument against her. It had always been that way ever since they were together.
But he wanted to get his point across this time, so he added, "Then tell me, shouldn’t you be happy that I cleared the problem? Why are you coming up here, and kicking up a fuss?"
"T-that—"
"I told you before to use me. Make me your weapon, your tool for anything in exchange for you to carry my baby," Alex insisted. "So why are you complaining that I have turned myself into a tool for you?"
"I-I never wanted to—" Eve was unable to complete her sentence when Alex suddenly walked up to her and pinched her chin. He forced her to look up and stare at his cold, blue eyes.
"Tell me, Sweetheart. If I am just a mere tool for you, then why are you upset because I used my money to bail you out?" Alex asked straight to the point.
"I-I—" Eve was unable to utter a single word.
If she could be honest, she would say that she still cared deeply for him. She still remembered how hard it was for them to live in that small rented apartment, scraping for money to survive as they built their dream together.
She also never saw him as a tool, not even when she agreed to his proposal a week ago.
"H-how about you then? Why would you be stupid enough to waste so much money on me? I’m here just to carry your child and move on!" Eve hurled the question back at him.
"Because..." Alex leaned forward for a kiss, and Eve didn’t try to push him away or dodge him. She simply closed her eyes, ready for the kiss. But there was no passionate kiss from Mr. Langford. All he did was lean to her ear and whisper, "You’re supposed to be by my side, not stuck in that office. I will do everything to make sure you’ll be stuck with me, Evelyn Carpenter."
"T-this is just a business deal between us, Alex," Eve muttered, but she still shut her eyes tight, unsure of what she was expecting.
"... You can call it whatever. All is fair as long as you’re with me."
