Chapter 36: Chapter 36: The mother of my child
Eve gave Pierre a cold gaze because she truly didn’t feel a thing for Pierre other than pure, unadulterated rage.
Truthfully, she didn’t have that much feeling for him to begin with. She only kept Pierre around, even agreed to get engaged because she thought he was a simple man, who might be a bit wimpy and idiotic, but at least he wouldn’t dare to lie to her.
On top of that, she never felt the need to be vulnerable in front of Pierre, which was perfect after the disastrous heartbreak with Alex.
’And now, I am back to square one,’ Eve thought as she glanced at Alex, who swept his gaze at everyone in the main hall with his cold gaze.
Eve was surprised by his coldness. He was looking at all of them as if he was looking at animals.
No, it was even worse than that. The way he looked at them was as if they were lower than animals, not even on the same level as Didi.
’I didn’t know he could look at others so degradingly,’ Eve pondered. She had only ever seen the loving, bickering, and passionate side of Alex. Even after they broke up, she had only seen him in two movies, and he always played the handsome heartthrob.
Eve unconsciously kept her gaze on him until Alex turned his head towards her, and that cold, degrading gaze vanished instantly. He smiled at Eve and said, "Let’s go and greet my family, my love
."Eve felt a little shy when Alex called her ’my love’. Because that meant he was serious about this couple’s act they were doing.
’I remember how you always called me ’my love’ when we were still dating. Did you call others by that name too? Because if you did, then I will... be a little upset,’ Eve wanted to ask that but kept her lips zipped as she knew they were in a serious situation now.
"It seems that everyone has gathered for today’s family function," Alex said with a perfunctory smile as he walked into the main hall with Eve by his side.
Everyone was looking at him with both fear and respect in their eyes, but some of them couldn’t help but shift their sharp eyes at Eve, who stood by his side.
Eve already expected this much, and frankly, she didn’t care about them. Alex told her that he was the de facto leader of the Langford Estate after his father, and his position was unshakeable.
Thus, many of his family members were hoping that they could somehow curry favor with him enough so they wouldn’t get kicked out of the payroll.
’Thirty people in this place. Ten middle-aged women, five middle-aged men, two old men, ten adults around my age, and three teenagers,’ Eve silently tried to identify all of them, but her focus was soon dispersed when one of the middle-aged women walked up to them and greeted Alex first.
"It’s so good seeing you, Alex! Oh, it’s been two years since you attended our family function, I thought you’d forgotten your own family!"
"I was busy with my movies," Alex replied lightly. He was smiling at her, but Eve still sensed that Alex was not sincere at all. He was looking at this middle-aged woman like looking at a fish in a tank. Entertaining, but he couldn’t care less about it.
"I’ve watched your movies. You do have the talent and the looks!" the middle-aged woman praised. Then, she turned her head and smiled at Eve, but her smile wasn’t as kind and sincere. "Is this the secret girlfriend that we’re waiting for? What a pretty girl. Are you a model? An actress who worked with Alex on the set? Or maybe an heiress that I’ve never heard of before? You should tell me who your father is, I’m sure I know him if he has a huge business in the States!"
Eve replied first before Alex could say anything. "I started my own advertising agency in Los Angeles around four years ago. It’s been doing well so far."
"An advertising agency?" the smile of the middle-aged woman disappeared. "Just one?"
"Yes."
"I see. Uhm, that’s very nice. Maybe you will be able to join this golf club twenty years from now if you’re lucky," the woman lost interest immediately. She shifted her attention back to Alex and said. "Well, we’re here because you invited us all. I’m sure there is something important to talk about, right?"
Eve watched as the rest of the people in this room were looking at her mockingly. She guessed that they must’ve thought a small businesswoman like her wasn’t worth their time.
It was true that she only had one agency, she just never told them all the mega projects she handled.
Thus, Eve simply ignored the passive-aggressiveness aimed at her, considering that most people here probably never worked a sweat in their entire lives.
Alex glanced at Eve, who was unaffected by his aunt’s provocation. He was ready to shut his aunt up, but since Eve didn’t take it to heart, he could save his energy when he met with his father later.
"Yes, I do, now stand back and listen, Aunt Lisa," Alex said as he wrapped his arm around her waist, and pulled her closer to his side. "As you can see, I am here with my woman. Her name is Evelyn Carpenter, and she—" Alex paused for a moment. He looked at Eve with eyes filled with unbridled love.
Eve was staring back at him, but there was a doubt in her heart. She came here to give Pierre a scare, and it worked well because whenever she stole a glance at Pierre and Julia, Pierre would start shaking, showing his true nature. He even tried to hide behind Julia, even though he was a 6 feet man.
However, she was caught off guard when Alex’s hand suddenly wrapped around her waist comfortably. She couldn’t help but look at him with a forced smile, silently telling him not to pull a stupid stunt.
Unfortunately, Alex ignored her warning and announced;
"—will be the mother of my child."
