Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Family Function (III)
Eve stared at the big sign on the top of the unique pyramid-shaped building in front of her. It was a long drive, at least longer than Eve expected, which took around an hour.
She read the sign and muttered the name.
"Langford Diamond Golf Resort."
"Welcome to my golf resort. It’s quite popular for people in my circle," Alex introduced the golf resort as he parked his car in his spot as the CEO of the said resort.
"I can see that," Eve commented as she watched the expensive cars going in and out of the gate. It was one of those untouchable, extremely private resorts reserved only for the 1%.
Eve had no interest in golf, even after she earned enough money to become a member of an exclusive golf club.
Mostly because she grew up never watching any golf competition, and was never introduced to it in the first place, as it was considered a rich people’s hobby.
She was glad that she didn’t need to lobby someone by attending any party or golf day just to get their favor. She thought it was because she was disciplined and would make everything strictly business.
But now that she was aware of Alex’s real identity...
Eve glanced at Alex, wondering if he used his power behind her to manipulate those businessmen to strike an advertising deal with her without a second thought.
"Something’s wrong?" Alex asked as he noticed her peering side-eye.
"Nothing much. I’m just surprised that you’re already managing such an expensive property. Did your father already share some of his inheritance?" Eve asked.
"No. Other than letting me be the CEO of Langford’s main enterprises, I am still basically an employee under him," Alex replied. "This golf resort is different, though. I used the money I invested since I was in high school to build it, and used my connections with my colleagues to promote it. My dad has nothing to do with this resort."
Eve raised her brow.
She was genuinely surprised because she thought Alex had everything handed to him on a silver plate.
Alex grinned mischievously, "You thought my father handed this to me, didn’t you?"
"W-well, I’m sorry for thinking that way," Eve apologized sincerely. After all, it was true that she had underestimated him before.
"Hahah, it’s not like you to apologize, Sweetheart," Alex laughed leisurely. But his smile dissipated a bit as he added, "My father and I... are in a difficult relationship, so there has never been any inheritance talk up until now."
Eve saw a hint of sadness in his eyes. Alex didn’t show much of his sadness when they dated back then, but she had lived with him long enough to know when he was getting depressed.
However, before she could ask anything, he had already returned to his cheerful self and said, "Let’s go to the family function. I’m sure everyone has been waiting for us."
"... Okay."
Alex and Eve were escorted by his assistant to the golf resort where others had been waiting. They walked through a long bridge with a view of the golf course.
It was indeed beautiful. Even in autumn, the grass was green as usual, but the trees’ leaves around the course were already yellowing or turning orange.
On top of that, the sheer size of the golf course was astonishing. It made her wonder how rich Alex truly was without his father’s backing.
Was he an actually capable man even without his dad coddling him?
Eve was unsure as she kept staring at him, hoping that Alex would catch what was in her mind and answer it.
But he didn’t.
He smiled at her and whispered, "Remember, Sweetheart, you need to pretend that we are very much in love. Aren’t we here to make sure that Pierre knows about us getting back together?"
"Ah, y-yes, you’re right..." Eve gulped as she tried to swallow her nervousness. She glanced at his strong arm, the arm which she liked to sleep on at night when they dated back then.
And now, she wrapped her hand around that strong arm, not only to pretend that they were getting back together in front of his family but also to gather her courage.
The moment she wrapped her hand around that strong arm, her heart was comforted, and she could feel the strength coming back to her feet.
Eve bit her lower lip in annoyance, as she had to admit that this comforting feeling came because her body was very familiar with this man. His scent alone was enough to make her feel at ease most of the time.
’If we’re like this, when can I truly move on from you, Alex?’ Eve lamented as they continued walking through the long bridge. ’I wish my body could pretend to hate you as well.’
As they approached the big door at the end, the assistant helped the guard outside to open the door and allowed their boss and his girlfriend to walk in.
Eve held her breath when the door was opened. Her body was tense as everyone inside the hall went quiet the moment they saw the main star had arrived.
Eve observed her surroundings and counted at least thirty unknown faces. Well, almost all unknown faces, because she recognized two people at the corner of the room; that wimpy bastard Pierre, and his partner for the day, which was none other than her mother, Julia Carpenter.
Eve’s eyes met with Julia, who was staring at her unblinkingly. Julia’s eyes held an unknown emotion in them, Eve couldn’t understand what was on her mind.
Whatever that was, she knew it wasn’t pleasant.
It had been more than a decade since she ran away from their shabby home to escape her, and now they reunited in an even more bizarre situation.
Eve shifted her gaze towards Pierre, who looked at her with a shocked expression as if he had just seen a ghost. His face paled, and his hand holding the wine glass trembled.
