Chapter 137: A Break Up (?)

Jules pov

I felt numb.

My entire mind felt blank and a sinking feeling was in my stomach.

Is this how it feels to experience a breakup?

I’ve never had many friends throughout my entire life. The ones I managed to have, we were never that close, and we were friends until my entire life got turned upside down and I had to flee for my life.

Taylor was the most significant friend I’ve ever made, along with Josh.

Perhaps that’s why I’m feeling this way, like everything is dying inside of me.

It’s still hard to come to terms with the fact that Taylor still remained adamant till the very last moment.

After he realized that I was being serious when I said we shouldn’t be friends anymore, he asked me to do whatever I wanted.

Of course, that hasn’t been what I expected to hear, so it felt like another slap to the face.

"Taylor!" Josh called out, moments after Taylor glared at me with a hurt expression across his face as he asked me to do whatever I wanted.

"What? He doesn’t want to be friends anymore, what did you expect me to say?!" He referred to Josh this time as he spoke while I remained in the same position, feeling like I was in some kind of trance.

"I don’t think he meant that. I believe he only said that so you could go ahead and tell him what he wants to know if you indeed want to still be his friend." Josh responded to Taylor as he stepped closer to him, no longer appearing mad like he was, minutes ago.

"You’re always on his side! I knew you were gonna pick his side again!" Taylor cried out and this time, I flinched in complete disbelief. As I stared at him, I began to silently wonder if this is the Taylor I became friends with.

"I’m not picking sides, Taylor. This is completely different from what you’re talking about now. Jules is in the right in this situation and you know I’d always call a spade a spade. He’s not a baby, T. I know you think you’re protecting him by being desecretive, but right now, it’s causing more harm than good. So just go ahead and tell him what he clearly wants to know, then you can both hug it out." Once Josh was done speaking, Taylor remained unmoving for a few moments before walking to the far end of the room, back turned towards Josh and I.

"You can both leave whenever you’re ready." He called out after a little while and the shock and surprise I felt was perfectly mirrored on Josh’s face.

I blinked a little, unable to believe what was currently happening.

"Taylor, c’mom. Don’t do this." Josh called out, a flabbergasted expression across his face as he stared hard at Taylor’s back.

Taylor shook his head and didn’t bother turning back around as he responded, voice flat and quiet.

"No, Josh. That’s enough. Just please, leave. The both of you."

This time, the hurt was very clear on Josh’s face just as my heart fell right into my stomach.

"Taylor." He called out again, voice low and filled with disbelief as he blinked slowly, clearly expecting Taylor to turn around and look at him.

But Taylor remain unmoving as he spoke up again.

"Just go."

That was the last word said.

I didn’t bother saying anything, and Josh didn’t bother saying anything else even though it was very clear that he had a lot of things to say.

As Josh grabbed his things and slung his bag across his shoulder, he threw one last look at Taylor who was still standing in the same position. After that, he held the door open for me and after I stepped out, he stepped out along with me without a backward glance.

Once we were alone in the hallway with the door to Taylor’s room closed, nothing was said between us. It felt like I’d say the wrong thing if I attempted to say a thing. I felt extremely guilty to the very core because Taylor and Josh were friends before I arrived, and it’s clear that I’m the reason Taylor sent him away along with me.

I felt sick to my stomach and I got consumed with the urge to apologize, but it felt like that might be the wrong thing to do right now, so I refrained from doing that and chose to take his hand and give it a small squeeze. Josh and I didn’t engage in a lot of physical contact and that’s because unlike Taylor who just goes in for hugs and hand holding, Josh is more hesitant and respectful of personal spaces.

He looked surprised for a moment before offering me a small smile.

~~~
When I got back to my dorm, I felt like the worst human on earth. I also felt like I got stabbed with a knife because Taylor still didn’t tell me what I badly wanted to know, and now it would be impossible for me to stop thinking about it.
Blaze wasn’t in the dorm this time, and I hadn’t the slightest idea of where he could be right now.
I still felt extremely shitty and would prefer to be cuddled up against him right now. It was clear that I now see him as a safe space, and I loved that so much for myself.
I fished out my phone before flopping into the bed and then I pulled up Blaze’s icon in my text messages, wanting to shoot him a text to let him know that I miss him.
However, before I could do that, a call came in from none other than Andrian.
I hesitated for a moment before accepting the call and pressing the phone against my ear.
We didn’t spend much time talking.
He invited me to show up at his office as fast as I could, and after a few more exchanges, the call ended and I blinked at the phone while contemplating on what to do.
To show up at his office or to not do that?
It was still hard for me to believe that he was actually a bad guy this entire time, but after the seed of suspicion got planted, I had been unable to think of someone that’s not a bad guy.
I ended up putting a call through to Blaze, and he picked up on the first ring. The gruffness of his voice through the phone speakers sent shivers rolling down my spine.
I recounted the latest development concerning Andrian to him, because that was obviously the smartest thing to do in this situation, and also because he usually knows what to do in every situation.
He decided that I should show up, explaining that if I refused to show up, Andrian’s gonna start suspecting that I’m suspecting him, and if that happens, he might decide to change plans. He explained that Andrian needed to believe that I’m completely clueless and still trust him with my entire life.
He urged me to put his number on speed dial so if anything happens, or if I notice something off, I’d be able to quickly put a call through to him.
I changed into something differently before exiting the dorm this time. It was late, the time was currently past eight, and as I walked down the hallway, I silently wondered why he wanted to see me.
~~~

I knocked on his office and the door swung open after a few moments.

"Hi Andrian." I greeted as I walked past him into the office, doing my best to appear unsuspecting. I sank into one of his seats right before my eyes landed on a woman sitting on the ground in a circle, with the now familiar spell book in front of her.

When I glanced at Andrian, he began to speak while pointing at the woman.

"I’ve found someone who’s actually powerful and knowledgeable, compared to the other witches. She comes from a pure bloodline like you, and i’m certain she’d be able to unseal your magic."

I felt myself grow cold at once.

I glanced at the woman again and I noticed how stiff she was and how her eyes were red rimmed.

I exhaled slowly and shook my head slowly.

"Andrian, we talked about this. I don’t want to try any more."

"Give it one more chance. This chance might end up working. In Fact, I believed it will." He urged and I shook my head again.

"I don’t want to, Andrian. Not at the risk of innocent people’s lives who don’t know the mess they’re getting into." I explained and Andrian pointed at the woman who was currently wiping at her eyes.

"She’s aware of the consequences! She’s okay with it."

I blinked at the woman whose eyes were redder than they previously were. "Did you force her to agree to this?"

I blurted out and Andrian denied the question vehemently, but I wasn’t blind, I could tell that this woman was clearly forced. No sane person would agree to do this after knowing the risks involved.

After the last person who tried this same thing ended up dying.

Andrian, what the hell are you up to?
