Chapter 58: +Chapter 58+
Jael stared at his phone after the call dropped, he had been on his way back after completing a mission.
Making arrangements for someone to clear out the things in the apartment Caspian had stayed in for a couple of days was easy.
The unexpected conversation reminded him that he still needed to run a background check on him.
So after reporting to Asher, he settled in a private room and fired up his laptop. He would rather the boss didn’t walk in on him because explaining his way out of that would be tricky.
He couldn’t exactly ask Caspian although that would make his work a lot more easier.
He hadn’t been able to get any useful information out of the thug that kidnapped him, so he was basically searching blind.
After ten minutes of making next to no progress because there were way more ’Caspian Mendezes’ than there should be - not knowing where the Omega came from also meant that he had to cast a wide net.
He decided to absently check his email, very little information came through email because most of their business partners liked their anonymity.
Brief phone calls were more common, and meeting in person was preferred but having an email did have its uses, like right now.
Jael blinked slowly at the title of the email sitting on his screen, hoping that maybe he just needed to look harder.
Because what was on his screen couldn’t possibly be right, why the fuck were they getting emailed by the fucking High Council.
The High Council was basically the world government, and they liked to pretend that Haines City didn’t exist, which was great for them.
Most prim and proper Packs didn’t like the idea of a city being run by criminals but they couldn’t deny that the criminals saved the city from becoming a hellscape.
He contemplated just deleting the email and acting like he didn’t see it but it might be nothing bad...
Jael snorted, yeah right, the High Council never had good news, especially not for them.
He clicked on the mail, hoping that it was something simple enough for him to handle without bothering Asher.
His mouth fell open as he scanned through the contents of the email. What the actual fuck?
They were basically being given an ultimatum by the High Council to return the heir of Moonstone Pack, Caspian Mendez, or face the consequences.
What the actual fucking fuck.
Jael didn’t know how long he sat there in disbelief, just staring at the screen.
It did solve the mystery of Caspian’s background but he would have preferred a less dangerous way of finding out.
He had thought he could keep this from Asher but there was no way to ignore it, so he shot to his feet and went right to him.
Asher already looked pissed when he stepped in. Good, he wouldn’t feel bad about ruining the Alpha’s mood.
"Boss? I’ve got something important for you," He strode in, laptop in hand.
Asher scowled, "It better not be complications with shipping, or I’m traveling down there myself."
Jael doubted that the Alpha would keep to his words, he was already getting jittery, a clear sign that he wanted to be back by Caspian’s side.
Asher wouldn’t handle this well.
"No, it’s worse." He said bluntly, placing his laptop right on the stack of files the Mafia King was working on. "It’s an email from the High Council."
"Why does the High Council have our fucking email..." He trailed off as he focused on the email with laser precision.
He really hoped that Asher would try to be logical this time, going against the High Council was impossible, He would have to give Caspian up.
"Fuck no." Asher growled, slamming the laptop hard enough to shatter the screen.
"Right," Jael muttered, "I expected that." He quietly picked up the laptop and started for the door.
"Are you just going to leave without a word?" Asher asked in surprise, he expected his second-in-command to give him an hour-long lecture.
"Yeah?" Jael said like it was the most obvious thing he could have done, "You’re not going to agree so I’ll be marking their email as spam."
That was more concerning than anything Jael could have done, but he was right, he wasn’t letting Caspian go unless he wanted to leave.

Jael opened the laptop when he got back to the room he had been in, unsurprised to see the crisscross of webbed lines across the black screen.
He sighed and closed it once again, easily getting a new device. Now that he had appropriate info on Caspian, he could do proper research.
It wasn’t that he doubted the High Council’s message, he just wanted to learn more.
It was rather curious, he wasn’t just a random person, he essentially had full control over the entire town.
Now why would someone like that come down to the city with nothing but a ratty backpack that held nothing of value?
The first thing he found was the news article of the previous Alpha and Luna, dying in a car crash, and unsurprisingly, it mentioned their only son, Caspian Mendez.
Victor and Paris Mendezes death was unexplained, the car was allegedly in perfect shape before they left for the function that claimed their lives.
Investigations reported that the brakes failed, and in a bid to not hit anyone, Victor Mendez drove off the road and down a steep hill.
The car rolled several times before landing at the bottom of the ravine and exploding on impact.
It was deduced by the coroner that they were dead before the car caught on fire.
It was a rather specific way to die on accident but it wasn’t his responsibility so he moved on from the article.
He needed to find out more about Caspian, there was nothing he could do for his parents anyway, they were already dead.
After a few minutes of searching, he started to realize that something was odd. No matter what he searched for, nothing about Caspian came up.
