Chapter 393: -Chapter 393-
Jael settled in a nearby living room, things were calm enough in the mansion for now but he wasn’t about to return to the club.
He could still oversee things from here, and he wasn’t talking about the running of things. He had his laptop set up on the center table, a grave expression on his face.
His phone rang occasionally, a list of Emma Browns on his screen. Jael knew it was futile, the hospital hadn’t even noticed her slipping in and out until he pointed it out to them.
The hospital responded first, they were still doing in-person interrogation will all of the staff on duty that day but they did send him security footage.
With a face to match, it cut down his search by a lot. There was an unexpected piece of information in all of the good news, the replacement was also missing.
It had only been a few days so it didn’t catch anyone’s attention but after looking through the security footage, they realized that after clocking in on the day of Caspian’s checkup, the replacement doctor seemed to vanish into thin air.
It made Jael frown, if whoever was behind this when through so much trouble to cover up their tracks, it was odd that they left the identity of the fake replacement so open... it was almost like they were leading them by the nose in a specific direction.
Even though there was a possibility that they were being led off the right track, Jael had to cover every opening.
With a face and name to match, he could use an intelligence agency to find the doctor. They would do more of an in-depth research than he could manage, not to mention, he was also busy...
There was a knock on the door then, pulling his attention from the laptop. "Come in," He said flippantly.
If he was getting a visit in person, it was either someone from the mansion needing something or Peter and Keith returning.
A maid opened the door and stood awkwardly, "I’m really sorry to bother, but the missus’ friend turned down the rest of the hot chocolate. M-Maybe you should check on him," She added in a quieter voice, wondering if she was overstepping. "He didn’t look too good."
Jael was on his feet as soon as she was done talking, feeling indebted to Lake and looking after the Omega because he was Caspian’s friend aside, if anything were to happen to the Omega, Davian was going to burn Asher’s mansion down.
He would prevent that if he could.
So he made his way back to the bedroom he had left Lake in. It was almost time for lunch, maybe they could have lunch together...
Jael frowned when he didn’t get a response after knocking for a while, trying the door to find it open. The first thing he noticed was that the bedroom was empty, the sour scent of lemons hitting him right after.
There was water running in the bathroom so he beelined for it, feeling like he got shot at the base of his spine when he saw the pregnant Omega on the ground.
"Lake?!" Jael hurried forward, he wasn’t trained to take care of possibly sick pregnant Omegas.
Lake sat up then, his movements sluggish. "Jael, why are you back here?" He tried to put on an unaffected voice.
Jael was quick to help him up, "That’s not important. Why were you on the ground?"
Lake sighed heavily when he helped him back on the bed, the Omega looked a wreck, Jael could feel the cold sweat building up.
"I wanted to splash some water on my face but I felt a little diz-" dizzy...
Lake cut himself off at the sight of Jael taking out his phone, sitting up with some difficulty. "What are you doing?" He asked with narrowed eyes.
"Calling Davian," Jael reported with a straight face.
"Give me that," Lake snatched it out of the Beta’s hand without warning, moving quickly despite his sickly pallor.
"I’m just going to get another phone," Jael deadpanned.
Lake sighed again but he didn’t return the phone, "Just... I’ll call my personal doctor, you don’t have to bother Davian about this, he’ll be back soon."
Jael didn’t look like he believed him so Lake kept talking, "I just got nauseous from the strength of Caspian’s scent, I’m not dying."
"Right," Jael muttered, choosing to trust the shifty Omega against his better judgment, "Call the doctor. I’ll have men pick him up if you want."
Lake wasn’t eager to involve Doctor Perez but his back was against the wall so he rang the doctor up.
"Lake," Doctor Perez said with happiness tinged with anxiety, the doctor’s constant state of being. "How are you doing?"
"Could you come over to Mafia King Asher’s home? Men will be sent to pick you up." Lake spoke concisely, the less the doctor knew the better, or he ran the risk of the antsy doctor informing Davian before he got here.
With that out of the way, Jael eased off him a bit. "Let’s have lunch while with wait for the doctor to show up."
Lake gagged audibly at the thought of food, making Jael cock a brow.
"Sure," Lake forced himself to say, a pasty smile on his face.
It was great for him that Davian was having a really busy day, because if the Alpha had called, he would have immediately heard the distress in his voice.
Lake really wasn’t trying to be difficult, it was just a little nausea, he would be fine.
"We could have lunch in here," Jael offered generously, getting to his feet. "Is there anything specific you’d like?"
"Anything with dark chocolate, matter of fact, if I could get bars of it, that would be great." Lake said with a grimace.
After the door closed behind Jael, he fell back limply against the bed with a soft sound. Had he gotten spoiled by Davian or was this what he would have had to go through if the Alpha didn’t take complete responsibility for the baby... amongst other things?
Thinking made his head hurt and it didn’t help his nausea so he tried to keep his head blank and mentally will his gagging to stop.
The good part about Doctor Perez showing up was that the doctor would definitely take his side about a little nausea not being a big enough deal to interrupt Davian’s conference trip.
Jael brought the food himself, the Beta pushing in a mobile tray, the image out of place with his hard expression, and the holsters he wore.
One whiff of the delicious food was enough to send Lake out of bed and hurtling to the bathroom.
Jael paused at the doorway with a grim expression, his mind made up even as he ditched the food in the hallway and followed after Lake to the bathroom. He might not be much help but at least he would keep the stubborn Omega off the ground.
Lake was dry gagging at the sink with his damp hair in his face which Jael reflexively held back, disapproval on his face as he realized that Lake had emptied out his stomach completely.
When the gagging fit passed, Lake swayed slightly on his feet. Jael quickly supported him, the Omega’s sour scent clinging to his tongue.
When Lake was helped back in bed, the Omega gave him a plaintive expression.
"That’s not going to work on me," He said bluntly, "The doctor just arrived, I’ve had the men lead him up here. Unless the doctor says otherwise, I’m calling Davian as soon as he gives you a checkup."
Lake couldn’t dispute that, too weak to even give a response. His mouth tasted awful, and his head and throat hurt with the force of the gags. At this point he didn’t have any fight left in him, he wanted Davian back more than anyone else.
There was a knock on the door then, it was no doubt Doctor Perez. The middle-aged Alpha looked mildly surprised when the door opened, his curious expression turning into one of horror when he caught a glimpse of Lake.
He hurried over with a bulky suitcase that held the tools of his trade, doing surface checkups, taking his pulse.
"What did you do to Mafia King Davian’s mate?" Doctor Perez demanded angrily despite being in the heart of another Mafia King’s turf.
Jael massaged his temples, "Asher’s mate went into heat, and his scent triggered Lake’s nausea. He won’t let me inform Mafia King Davian..."
Jael barely had all of his words out before Micheal was on his feet and going to a corner to make a call.
Lake just closed his eyes, too tired to keep protesting. If he could just fall asleep, maybe when he woke up Davian would be here.
He didn’t open his eyes while Doctor Perez set up an IV to replenish all the fluids he lost. He still felt nauseous but his body seemed to have accepted the fact that he had nothing else to throw up.
