Chapter 316: -Chapter 316-
Rosie smiled almost imperceptibly at that, "In that case, I’ve got three applicants shortlisted."
"I’ll see them," Lake said confidently, stepping into the office they stopped at.
It was Davian’s, and unlike the rest of the company which was done in hyper-simplistic chrome and glass, his office was done in warmer tones.
Rosie went off to get the applicants, leaving him and Davian behind in the office.
The Alpha walked over to pull out his own seat for him to sit on, a content smile on his face.
Lake walked over and sat down, the massive leather chair dwarfing him.
Davian letting him handle things didn’t feel like he was being patronized, if anything, the Alpha’s gray eyes felt less cold now.
"Do you want me to stay here during the interview?" Davian offered, hovering over the chair.
Lake tipped his head back to look at him, "Yes, please," He murmured, his nerves audible in his voice.
"Nervous?" Davian asked lightly.
"How would you feel if I was looking over your shoulder while you were cooking?"
"Nauseous," Davian said bluntly without mincing his words, making Lake giggle.
"So you want me to leave?" The Alpha deduced, unable to hide his worry.
"Don’t" Lake said in a rush, placing a hand over Davian’s hand which was placed on the support of his executive chair.
There was a knock on the door then, Rosie poking her ponytail in before stepping in with a nervous Omega close on her heels.
The applicant’s nervous smile faded at the sight of Lake seated on Mafia King Davian’s chair like he belonged there, a hand on the elusive Mafia King like he was in complete control.
"Hi, Sharon, please take a seat." Lake said politely, proud of himself for saying that without stuttering.
She opened her mouth to speak and then hastily closed it, nervously walking forward to take the offered seat.
While Lake went over the questions Rosie had already asked, the secretary stood stoically at one edge of the table, Davian remaining in his spot behind his chair.
Lake forgot to be anxious at the sight of the jittery applicant who had to be terrified of what she walked into.
Her eyes strayed over to Davian far too often for his liking but it was clear that she would listen to orders, so Lake let it slide.
The interview was over in no time, another applicant striding in shortly after, her hair was mussed up like she had run her hands through the blonde locks before she was ushered in.
She had undone several buttons on her dress shirt to reveal a generous amount of cleavage, taking a seat without being invited, leaning forward with a wide smile.
If Lake could wrench his eyes from the applicant, he would notice that Rosie was hiding a smile behind her tablet.
She had no ulterior motives for sending this particular applicant in. She had just been making herself a nuisance, and Rosie really wanted to see her get put in her place.
She didn’t put her nose in the boss’ business but it was clear to see that the mated and pregnant Omega by his side was his.
And just as she predicted, he didn’t look impressed by the applicant’s antics.
"I’m sure you’ve gone through my resume," She started in a sultry voice, looking directly at Davian, "So when do I clock in?"
"Eyes down," Lake said sharply, "I’m the one who gets to decide if you’ll get the job or not." He let her know, his words cutting. "Do you want to try that introduction again?" He offered helpfully.
Davian had been zoned out thinking of how much cooking he could get away with for dinner, only paying attention at the sharp tone of Lake’s voice.
The applicant stared wide-eyed at Lake like she was just registering his presence for the first time.
"No?" Lake tilted his head patronizingly, "I thought so. Please send the next applicant in, Rosie."
Rosie’s smile could light up a room, "Right away, Lake." She replied, staring down pointedly at the applicant. "Please come with me."
Lake was in a dark mood for the rest of the interview refusing to address it because deep down he knew why.
"Thanks for your assistance, Rosie," He said flatly when they were all done.
The secretaries wouldn’t need to come into the mansion, they could do their jobs anywhere.
"Anytime," The secretary replied, quickly making herself scarce.
Lake sulked the entire elevator ride down, his reaction was illogical, which made it all the more difficult to shake it off.
"Still nervous?" Davian peered right into his eyes. "I thought you handled it perfectly."
Lake took a deep breath and expelled it, "Thank you. I’m not nervous." He walked by the Alpha’s side as they made their way across the foyer, attracting attention.
"I’m more worried about you standing for the entire interview."
Davian shrugged, his gaze sharp as they stepped outside. "If Rosie can do it, so can I."
A familiar face approached then, it was the garish applicant. Lake’s eyes narrowed, not looking forward to whatever it was she had to say.
"I wanted to apologize for my unprofessionalism at the interview today." She said with a grimace.
"You didn’t have to push yourself," Lake said flatly, losing more and more of his filter the longer he stayed around her.
"Oh my god," She flared up, "You kicked me out without a second chance, and even after all that I still came to apologize, and now you are going to insult me..."
Davian put himself in between her and Lake then, unimpressed. "You’re in the way."
That simple sentence was a warning and the applicant knew to hotfoot it away.
She didn’t try any further to pursue whatever one-man victim show she had been about to put on.
Lake wordlessly followed after Davian, his mood less sour after the Alpha stood up for him.
Jealously was such a silly emotion.
The car was unsurprisingly a different one, Davian helping him open his side of the door before going around to get in the driver’s seat.
"Do you want hot chocolate?" Davian asked out of the blue, catching him off guard.
The Alpha had been looking for several different ways to ask, because if he couldn’t make dinner, he could at least do that.
Lake’s smile was slow and soft, "Yeah I want hot chocolate."
