Chapter 289: -Chapter 289-
Davian had told them to leave the foyer, but Matilda was physically averse to letting this trashy whore further into the mansion.
"You’re going right back to where you came from." She snarked at her.
"You heard the boss," Sofia flashed her a smile, lighting up her cigarette. "Give me a good room, Art," She tossed to Arthur, "For old times sake."
Arthur hadn’t said a word but her name ever since he walked in on Sofia in the foyer.
"Why are you back?" He asked quietly, his voice trembling.
Arthur wanted to believe it trembled from anger, but he could never be angry at Sofia.
Sofia blew a cloud of smoke at him, her soft brown eyes mischievous.
"Heard my kid was pregnant," She said lightly, "What mother wouldn’t show?"
"He hates you." Arthur told her bluntly.
Sofia looked unfazed by that declaration, "But you don’t, do you?" She said with a mocking tone to her voice.
Arthur said nothing to that, "You should leave."
Sofia scowled, ruining her soft features. "Don’t fucking tell me what to do, Art."
"If you need money, I’ll give you." He said quietly - it wouldn’t be the first time.
"I don’t want your money, Art," She walked up to his face and blew a cloud of smoke right at his face. "I want everything."
The bitterness underneath the surface of Arthur’s skin bubbled up, a twisted hatred making his muddy brown eyes murkier.
"Bitch!" He snarled, grabbing a fistful of her hair. "That’s what you always say! And where did that leave you?"
Sofia laughed in his face, her fur coat slipping down her thin shoulders.
"You shouldn’t curse at the woman you love, Art." She said playfully, like they were having a little teasing moment.
Matilda stood a short distance away, stunned. She knew it before Sofia said it out loud but she still had a difficult time coming to terms with it.
When she questioned Arthur about his dislike for Lake, she knew it had something to do with jilted love.
And at the time, she thought that Arthur was a little too old to be romantically invested in the male Omega.
But oh she couldn’t have been more wrong...
Lake’s existence must have dug into Arthur’s side every one of his waking days.
It was worsened by the fact that the Omega looked exactly like his mother... Matilda scowled, of course, being trash whores ran in the family.
Arthur bit the inside of his cheek till it bled as Sofia laughed at him.
He had been just a house staff when she came to work at the mansion, they had been seventeen then.
Barely a few months passed and Sofia stopped coming in to work, instead, she hung around Mafia King Alaric’s men.
The next time he saw her, she was heartbroken and pregnant.
And then, just like right now, he had asked her to choose him. He would have scraped the skin off his hands to give her and her bastard a good life.
But she had laughed in his face just like she did now, it made his blood boil like lava.
Arthur yanked Sofia closer by her hair and kissed her hard until she bled like him, her red lipstick smeared all over her pretty face.
The kiss tasted of cigarette smoke, and the desolation that he would never be able to get over her, and she knew that.
"Is that all it takes to get a decent room around here?" Sofia stared right up at him, soft brown eyes beguiling.
Arthur gritted his teeth hard, wisely putting distance between them before he made another similar mistake.
"Come with me," He said professionally, leading the way up the stairs.
Savannah had watched this from a corner and when they started up the stairs, leaving her mom behind in the foyer, she ducked out of sight, returning to her room.

Lake ended the moment by taking a step back, wiping his face with his silk sleeves.
There was really no reason to wipe his face because all of his tears had been cleaned up by Davian’s shirt.
He looked up at the Alpha with a wobbly bottom lip and a red nose, "I-I’m sorry about that." He mumbled, looking away just as quickly.
Davian had to close his eyes briefly to remain on track and not lose himself. "Don’t be." He said shortly, decisively. "What do you want me to do with her?"
Whatever Lake said was what he would do, it didn’t matter if that meant breaking her neck and throwing her limp body over a cliff.
"I don’t know," Lake murmured.
His thoughts were a mess, his first response was to get rid of the imposter, his mom was dead to him.
But the little boy in him that never got any warmth needed to know.
He wanted to ask her questions, he wanted to confirm that everything his dad said about her had been a lie.
That she had a good reason to leave, and she was back because she loved him, and she wanted him.
"I could send her away," Davian said carefully.
He didn’t want to push Lake too hard, but he also didn’t want a repeat of what just happened.
"W-Wait, no," Lake said in a rush, sounding nothing like himself. "I want to talk to her first."
"Not tonight," Davian pulled him back into his arms without caring for the repercussions.
"Let’s eat and go to bed, you can talk to her tomorrow."
Lake went easily when Davian led him out of the room, it felt like he had been hurtling down a cliff.
He was exhausted, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Dinner and bedtime sounded like a great plan actually.
"Where are we going?" He had to ask when he realized that they weren’t heading to the kitchen.
"To your room," Davian said vaguely.
Lake clamped his lips shut, because, after the entire day of insisting he wanted his own room, he wasn’t sure he could stand being alone after what just happened.
