Chapter 279: -Chapter 279-
Lake woke up groggy the next morning, a furrow between his brows.
Davian clinging relentlessly to him wasn’t as surprising as it should be, neither was the fact that he was in the Alpha’s room, in his bed.
Davian was still fast asleep, the Alpha’s grip tight around him despite that, almost like he was certain that he would try to leave.
Lake frowned, it was morning, late in the morning, and he remembered exactly when he had fallen asleep.
It had been abruptly, one moment he was eating, and the next moment, the fact that something was wrong had registered.
But before he could do anything about it, he had slipped into unconsciousness.
The first time he met ’Lady’ Matilda, she had paid him a hundred grand for him to leave Davian.
He wouldn’t put it past her to drug his food or worse.
Lake hadn’t thought much about it, mostly because he was too hungry to, and also because he didn’t think that they would tamper with the food Davian would also be eating.
He had clearly thought wrong.
Lake still wasn’t sure how things were going to turn out, but he couldn’t let Davian eat anything provided by the mansion.
He was merely being proactive, if anything happened to the father of his child, it would be troublesome.
The uncomfortably warm temperature of Davian’s body brought his attention back to the Alpha.
There were worry lines on his face as he studied him, wondering if the Alpha was still asleep due to their drugged food.
But now that he thought about it, did Davian even eat a bite? The Alpha had been content to watch him eat, and Lake had been too ravenous to focus on other things at that moment.
So did that mean that Davian hadn’t eaten at all?
The worry quickly ate at Lake, making him shake Davian awake against his better wishes.
Groggy gray eyes slipped open and instantly panicked, Davian’s pupils shaking rapidly until the Alpha focused on him.
"I told you I wasn’t leaving," Lake scolded lightly, unable to help his fond tone.
Davian just weakly tucked his head in the curve of his neck. "Liar."
Lake frowned at Davian’s response, but he was more worried at the fact that Davian hadn’t eaten lunch and dinner the day before.
His rut was putting a lot of strain on his body, so he needed nourishment.
But he didn’t trust the food that Arthur would bring if he requested for some.
So he had no other option but to prepare something for the Alpha by himself.
Again, this was all a means to an end, he just wanted to ensure a secure future for his child, that was all.
"Hey," He whispered quietly to wake Davian up, the Alpha had dozed off again almost instantly which was rather concerning.
Because by now, Davian should have been trying to break his back.
He had to give the Mafia King credit, he went on high alert in a split second.
Lake didn’t bother trying to convince him that he wasn’t leaving again, Davian was even less inclined to believe him now, so it didn’t matter.
"Are you hungry?" He asked, trying to approach the matter simply.
Davian froze and then swooped down to claim his lips, Lake kissed him back before protesting, pushing the Alpha’s face away.
"Not what I meant," He was quick to add, sitting upright.
Davian mimicked his actions and it had Lake wincing. Now that he had gotten a proper look at Davian, the Alpha’s eyes were dark and sunken.
The sight of him made up Lake’s mind for him, "That’s it, we’re going to get you some food."
Davian was still groggy, his vision spinning every time he turned his head. "We?" He managed to get out, his mouth feeling like it was stuffed with cotton.
Lake knew that even though Davian was in such bad shape, the Alpha wouldn’t let him leave alone as long as he was conscious.
He would also rather not go alone into the den of lions that was Arthur and Matilda, so they would be going to figure out breakfast together.
Well, it was more brunch because it was practically noon at that point.
"Yes, we," He indulged him, helping him off the bed.
"We need to change," He explained to Davian, straining silently as he supported the Alpha’s weight.
Moving around the mansion in nothing but bathrobes was something Lake was never going to do.
So half an hour later, they were making their way down the hallway, mostly dressed.
Lake had managed to get sweatpants on Davian but the Alpha simply refused to wear a shirt.
He would pout and rip off any shirt Lake tried to wear him, and in a way, Lake understood, the Alpha was burning up.
He would also not want to wear a shirt if his temperature was that high.
Lake would have arranged for a bath before they left but that was lower on the priority list than getting some food in the Alpha, so here they were.
Slowly shambling down the hallway, Lake wearing just Davian’s shirt because the Alpha’s pants couldn’t fit him, and his own clothes were out of the picture.
Davian could probably walk by himself but Lake didn’t want to take that risk, plus, the Alpha seemed incapable of existing without touching him in some way.
It was a surprise that they didn’t run into any house staff, and it turned eerie when the kitchen was completely empty when they stepped in.
It was almost like someone had gone ahead of them to clear everyone out.
Lake couldn’t complain because it spared him a lot of awkward confrontations, but at the same time, he couldn’t be grateful because this could just be a trap.
"Sit here," He directed Davian when they got to the kitchen, gesturing at a padded stool.
The Alpha obeyed, sitting on the stool with his elbows propped on the counter behind him.
Well, ’sitting’ was a generous term, he was more slumped on the stool, his head hanging down limply.
