Chapter 278: -Chapter 278-
Matilda had hurriedly returned to the dining room after dropping off Savannah in Davian’s room, her smile stretching her lips.
Now all she needed to do was wait for the signal from Arthur so they could move to the next step.
If she had calculated right, she should be getting a call from the butler right about...
The door to the dining room opened, startling her because she hadn’t been expecting a visitor.
At first, Matilda’s brows dropped low on her head, thinking it was her daughter, only to shoot to her feet when she saw Arthur.
"What are you doing?" She demanded at the sight of the butler with the laundry basket in hand.
"This wasn’t part of the plan!" She took a couple of steps back as she spoke, fear creeping into her eyes. "Why did you come here?"
Arthur just pushed the basket to a corner, his expression grim.
"The plan has gone to shit," He said in a calm tone that belied the meaning of his words.
Matilda had quickly convinced herself that Arthur was backstabbing her, so it took a moment for her to process his words.
"What?"
"Master Davian didn’t get knocked out." Arthur spelled out.
"W-What?" Matilda repeated, her vocabulary seemed to have shrunk to that single word.
"The drugs didn’t work on the Master," Arthur was nice enough to repeat, starting to pace.
"He found me out and took back Lake," The butler started to monologue, a hand propped under his jaw.
"He said nothing but that doesn’t mean we’re off the hook," He stopped now and turned to face Matilda who was still having a difficult time understanding what was going on.
"Davian didn’t fall asleep?" Matilda asked frightfully, having more to be worried about.
It meant that Davian had seen Savannah! She had to check on her daughter right away to know what had happened.
"It’s possible that the sleeping drugs didn’t mix well with his rut," Arthur murmured, troubled by the thought that they had harmed the Mafia King in any way.
He knew that he should have been more skeptical when Matilda included Master Davian in her shady plans.
Arthur wanted to be rid of Lake, but not badly enough to put Master Davian in potential danger.
Matilda went quiet, silently putting together what had happened from Arthur’s broken narration.
"You’re sure he said nothing?" She spoke quietly, composed now that she knew exactly what was going on.
Things never went how she expected them to when it came to Davian. And the more time she spent around the Mafia King, the more she realized how tolerant he actually was.
She knew better than to take that for granted and push the limits, but it meant that there was a chance of escaping this unscathed.
"I wouldn’t forget something like that," Arthur said with a scowl.
"Then it’s fine." Matilda straightened her shoulders, "Just wait and do nothing."
"W-What?"
Now it was Arthur’s turn to be stumped, those were the last words he expected from Matilda.
"Yes," Matilda doubled down, heading for the door. "You might as well get an early night to prepare yourself for tomorrow." She tagged on.
Arthur watched her leave in amazement, unsure if she was brave or foolish for her reaction.
There was some truth in it, however, because there wasn’t much he could do.
Her suggestion was the only available one, short of running into the night and hoping that Master Davian never found him, the only thing left to do was wait quietly.
Arthur smoothened down his slicked-back ashy blond hair, his shoulders aching from the tension-packed in them.
He supposed he had no one but himself to blame for how the night turned out, so he walked over to the laundry basket and pushed it out of the dining room.

Matilda’s calm demeanor only lasted long enough until she was out of Arthur’s line of sight, and then she was practically running down the hallway.
She didn’t trust Arthur, and the feeling was mutual.
She hadn’t wanted to show all her cards to the butler so she had to play it cool but this could very well be the end of the road for them.
Matilda didn’t quite expect to see her daughter in her room, but she was relieved to find her there all the same.
Savannah shot up from her bed when her door opened without a knock, knowing well who it was.
"What happened?" Matilda demanded as soon as the door was shut behind her.
Savannah wasn’t surprised at her mom’s disapproving tone, of course, she would think that Savannah was the reason the plan fell apart.
"Davian woke up," She said in a small voice, shrinking into herself.
"And how did that happen?" Matilda demanded, her eyes blazing.
"I-I don’t know," Savannah stammered, "I just did what I was told."
Matilda gritted her teeth and looked away from her daughter like she was barely holding back from hitting her.
"And what did he say to you?" She scowled.
"He...He said... that he told me not to come into his room," Savannah stumbled over her words, black hair tousled.
"T-Then he asked about Lake and hurried out of the room..."
"And you didn’t think to hide when you saw him waking up?" Matilda snapped at her, interrupting her report of what had happened.
"It happened without warning," Savannah protested, sounding close to tears.
She had been the one to risk herself but it seemed like nothing she could do would please her mom.
She thought that by doing everything she wanted, she would remain in her mom’s good graces, but clearly, even that wasn’t going to be good enough.
"You have the perfect excuse for everything, don’t you?" Matilda said with narrowed eyes, fuming.
Everything had been going so well until it completely fell apart, and if it weren’t for the two incompetent people she had been working with, they would have been able to salvage the plan.
Savannah knew better than to say anything else, whatever she said to defend herself would just be used against her.
This was an old game with her mom.
"Go to sleep." Matilda sneered, done with the conversation. "We’ll be lucky if we don’t end up dead tomorrow." She said flippantly, heading for the door.
