Chapter 214: -Chapter 214-

"Hey," Caspian beamed at Asher when he met up with him in the hallway.

Trying to pretend that it wasn’t strange for Asher to be back home so early wasn’t working out for him so well.

"You didn’t tell me you were coming back."

Asher didn’t look troubled, disapproval the only negative emotion in his hazel-gold eyes.

"I didn’t plan to. Davian called."

Caspian’s eyes went wide at that, "Is it bad?"

"Hardly. Could you tell me what’s going on?"

They were in the hallway, but it was empty so Caspian saw no harm in telling his mate right there.

He didn’t predict that it would make Asher laugh hard enough that he struggled to breathe.

"I didn’t think it was that funny," He said dryly, holding Asher close so that the Alpha could lean his weight on him.

"It’s not. It sucks for... Lake?"

"Right," Caspian nodded, letting Asher know that he got the Omega’s name right.

"But this is the funniest thing to happen to Davian." Asher was saying, wiping metaphorical tears.

"Hell, I’d call Nikolai if I could stand the bastard..."

"I don’t think there will be a need for that," Caspian interrupted, going easily when Asher straightened up and pulled him in his arms.

"I just need to know if Lake will be fine." He tagged on, worry making his blue eyes glassy.

Asher became serious at the weight of emotions in his mate’s voice. "Yeah. Davian said you could keep him if you wanted, that he just wants to have a talk with him."

"Oh," Caspian perked right up, that was the best news yet.

Keeping Lake depended on what the Omega wanted and if his mate would let him.

But the turbulent waters were past, Lake just had to talk to Mafia King Davian and they could put all of this behind them.

"Yeah, so we’re all going to be having dinner together," Asher concluded.

When he said it like that, it was difficult to explain why the two people in question who needed a talk didn’t just have dinner together.

"That’s a great idea!" Caspian chirped much to his surprise. "That way I can keep an eye on Lake."

He didn’t trust Davian, he had barely met the Mafia King but his interactions with Nikolai were enough to make him withhold his trust.

Asher could relax for the first time since Caspian called that morning.

And most of that had to do with his mate’s sweet scent and warm body in his arms.

He couldn’t be more disinterested in the sexual lives of the other Mafia Kings, but this was such an entertaining story he didn’t even mind getting roped into it.

Getting front seats to this was sure to make his evening, but for now, he had to get back to work.

All the worry had melted off Caspian’s body at his mate’s close proximity and reassurance.

Trusting Asher’s reaction to a potentially dangerous situation was risky though, because the Alpha seemed to get happier the more danger he was in.

But hearing what Davian had said was very reassuring.

He gave his mate a sweet smile and a kiss, watching the Alpha stride down the hallway.

Caspian was honestly relieved that it had been so easy to get his Alpha to go back to work.

And if Asher was still chuckling to himself as he went down the hallway, he was going to ignore it.

He energetically pushed open the door of the room he left Lake in, the poor Omega flinching hard as he did.

"Sorry," He said sheepishly, he hadn’t meant to startle him.

"No, I’m sorry," Lake apologized for getting startled.

Knowing that it would just turn into an endless circle of apology Caspian moved right on.

It was imperative that Lake got the important news first so that he would stop trembling from fear.

"Davian called Asher," He plunged headfirst into it.

"Master Davian did?" Lake said fearfully.

Master?

"Yes, and he said you can stay here if you want, and he just wants to have a talk with you..."

"A t-talk?" The Omega repeated, just as fearfully, completely ignoring the first half of the sentence.

"We’re all having dinner together so I’ll be close by," Caspian tried to reassure him.

Lake composed himself then, this wasn’t Caspian’s problem, he had already burdened him enough.

"Alright, thank you." He said gratefully, holding back the rest of his dissensions.

If he was going to be killed or worse, Master Davian would have demanded for his return.

"Come, I’ll take you to your room," Caspian said with a smile.

And for the first time, Lake could focus on the fact that Master Davian had said he could stay here.

Could he really do that or was that just a test of his loyalty?

Because it couldn’t really look great for him if he had run to another Mafia King for protection from his own.

He decided then not to address it, because as much as he would rather remain here, he refused to betray his loyalty.

He wasn’t going to lose to his money-hungry, lying, sly-dog of a father.

Lake expected to be taken to a stowaway guest room, and not at all to the very hallway Caspian’s shared room with his mate was.

"My room is right at the end of that hallway, you can come find me there any time," Caspian said as he ushered him to the lavish room.

Lake was speechless, hugging his bag close as he stepped in.

"Or you can just use the landline to call for a maid, they’ll help you out with whatever you need, even if it’s getting through to me."

Lake doubted he would be using the phone, it felt completely wrong to use a maid’s services when he was one himself.

Caspian drifted out in a cloud of sugar and violets after giving him a couple of directions on what to do.

Lake watched the Omega leave in a vision of beauty, standing awkwardly in the room long after Caspian had left.
