Chapter 146: +Chapter 146+
Caspian would like to say that he had already asked a couple of questions that Asher didn’t respond to but the atmosphere was too tense for that.
"Is your rut already over?" He asked instead, fighting the urge to get off Asher.
He had thought that things were resolved now but Asher was acting odd.
"You don’t want to hit me?" Asher asked with a plaintive expression.
Caspian had a split second where he really considered that, almost convinced that he had lost all the progress that he made with Asher.
"Now I really want to," He grumbled, getting off him.
Asher catching him by his wrist and pulling him back made it hard to keep his upset expression on his face.
"If you want me to be mad at you so bad, I’ll be." He threatened but his threat was softened by him reaching for Asher’s face.
"I just can’t believe I’m getting off so easy," Asher said honestly.
"Don’t push it," Caspian glowered, straddling the Alpha.
He should be upset, and he was, his happiness just overshadowed that.
Asher wisely clammed up at that. Caspian was always good to him but he had expected some repercussion.
Caspian had gone back to treating him like nothing happened... actually, the way he treated him never changed.
"My rut is over," He provided answers, hands on Caspian’s thighs. "There’s a chance that it’s just another anomaly so I’ll get that checked." He revealed everything.
Caspian looked thoughtful, absentmindedly smoothing Asher’s hair back.
"I also asked for lunch while you were cleaning up."
Caspian was satisfied with the answers, there was a lot he had to discuss with Asher but it was already mid-afternoon and they had yet to eat.
"Let’s talk while we eat," He suggested, making a move to get off Asher again.
Asher caught him by his waist this time, rising off the bed with him in tow.
That smile that made Caspian feel like he had sour candy on his tongue was back, he smiled so wide it hurt.
Knowing that Asher was just as clingy as he felt was doing a lot for his confidence.
The Alpha didn’t let him go even when there was a knock on the door, a maid pushing a mobile tray in.
Caspian got off Asher when their food was served, the fact that he hadn’t eaten for most of the previous day hitting in the presence of food.
He was so focused on the meal that he didn’t notice Asher’s look of disappointment when he put distance between them.
He had said that they would talk while they ate but there wasn’t even the time for that.
Caspian was so focused on eating that he didn’t notice Asher watching him eat for a while.
"What?" He asked with wide eyes, his mouth full. "Are you not hungry?"
"Don’t talk with your mouth full," Asher reluctantly looked away, taking a forkful of food to satisfy Caspian.
Caspian huffed at that but refocused on eating, despite having a lot to say.
"Do you want to go with me to a function-" Asher started to ask, cutting himself off at the scathing look Caspian gave him.
"What was that about a function?" The Omega asked when the dishes were all cleared away - Asher hadn’t dared to say a word after that.
Asher looked a tad self-conscious, he wanted to get rid of Caspian’s doubts that he wasn’t good enough for him.
Because he hadn’t once thought about anyone else since he came into his life, and he wanted him to know that.
"Do you want to accompany me?" He asked quietly.
"Are you always going to sound like a kicked puppy now?" Caspian narrowed his eyes at him.
"It’s a yes or no answer, Caspian." He countered dryly.
Caspian moved closer, comfortably straddling him. "Yes," He accepted with a sigh, resting his head on Asher’s shoulder.
Asher asking that was surprising considering that just the day before the Alpha had him locked up, but he wasn’t going to make things difficult for him when he was clearly trying to remedy his faults.
"When is it?" He kept up the casual conversation.
It was a way to ease into the actual conversation that they needed to have.
"In two days," Asher replied.
"So are you ready to have the conversation?" Caspian blurted out, leaning back to look Asher right in the face.
Asher gulped silently, knowing that this was coming.
Was he ready? No, but he would rather volunteer to stop a truck with his body than hurt Caspian again.
"Ah... yeah," He accepted with shifty eyes.
Caspian bit back a smile, "That’s not very convincing."
"But what if it doesn’t work out?" Asher held his shoulders, a twinge of desperation in his hazel-gold eyes.
Caspian was completely calm, "And what if it does?"
At Asher’s plaintive expression, Caspian went on. "Fine, if this doesn’t work out, I’ll leav..."
He could barely get all of his words out because the Alpha looked like he had been shot.
Caspian rested his head on Asher’s shoulders again, a peaceful smile on his face.
He wasn’t at all worried that this wouldn’t work out but he had wanted to reassure Asher regardless.
"Want to watch a show?" He asked lazily, somehow feeling drowsy although he just woke up.
Asher reached forward to grab the TV remote off the table, scrolling through channels even as Caspian’s eyes drifted shut.
Things weren’t exactly perfect between them but Asher was willing to try, and that was what was most important.
Having the Alpha listen to him for once was such a relief, he would get over the rest of the hurdles later.

Caspian woke up again at sundown, he was all alone in the bedroom. Asher must have helped him to bed.
He got to his feet and immediately headed for the shower to clean up.
He had wanted to mention it while Asher was speaking but there had been a lot they needed to deal with.
He also needed to head to the hospital for Doctor Brianna to do a check-up because he had done one of the things she said he shouldn’t.
He considered asking Asher if he could accompany the Alpha on his own hospital visit, but he would rather that Asher didn’t follow him on his hospital trip either.
So he scrapped the idea, confident that Asher would tell him what happened at the doctor’s regardless.
He got dressed in one of Asher’s shirts and shorts, and wandered out of the bedroom, wondering where Asher was.
The house staff were familiar now and didn’t stand out at all, no matter where he bumped into them.
"Do you have any idea where Asher is?" He found himself asking the maid who listened patiently, starting to think that he should have just called the Alpha.
"Pretty sure he’s in his office," She answered casually, "I could help you check..."
"Don’t worry about that, I’ll check myself." He stopped her, not wanting her to stop her task just for that.
Besides, he wanted to move around, so this was one way to do that.
Finding Asher’s office was easy, finding men standing guard in front of his office was a bit startling.
Maybe being around Asher was starting to numb him to just how dangerous being a Mafia King was because the Alpha seemed indestructible.
But he didn’t quite think there would be a reason for Asher to have guards in his home office.
The men recognized him instantly, one of them leaning forward to better hear him.
"Is Asher in there?" He cleared his throat.
"Yeah," The guard answered, opening the door without bothering to knock.
Caspian was a little startled by this, he made it a point not to intrude on Asher when he was busy, remembering how badly it had gone last time.
Thankfully, it was just him and Jael having a conversation.
"You’re awake," Asher immediately cut off their conversation to focus on him.
Jael doing the same like he expecting to see him injured or worse.
"I hope I’m not interrupting anything important," Caspian said with a tense smile even as he climbed right into Asher’s lap.
Jael had a blank expression as he watched them whisper to each other between kisses, right in front of him.
Behind the mild annoyance and exasperation, you could see that he was really happy.
"I’m not part of the furniture you know," He interrupted them, making a mental note to add a big bonus to his salary.
As an incentive for all his hard work, and for the damages he had to endure parenting two of the most stubborn people he ever had the fortune of meeting.
At least Caspian had the presence of mind to look embarrassed, while Asher made him want to punch the gloat off his face.
"Let’s go eat dinner," He rose to his feet to spare himself any further PDA.
That got Caspian moving, and Asher had to give in as well. He hung back so they could walk in front of him, absently checking his phone for new messages.
