When Jael stayed quiet, clearly expecting more, Asher tried a half-hearted explanation.

"It’s probably because I had an episode a couple weeks ago?" He suggested uncertainly.

Jael didn’t look impressed by this, "So you’ll be getting another in a couple weeks time?"

Asher slowed down, he had just been about to sit on a chair next to Jael but the Beta’s words made him pause.

"That... that can’t happen right?"

"You’re asking me?" Jael pointed at himself, "I’m not the doctor."

Now Asher sat, looking troubled. "I’ll get that checked."

Jael waved that away because that wasn’t even one of the problems on the forefront, at least there was still a couple of weeks before another possible flare-up.

And it came with blaring alarms so if it did happen again, they could do a repeat of what they did this time.

"What do you want to do?" He asked instead, deathly curious but not really.

Because whether he liked it or not, he always got dragged into whatever ridiculous decisions Asher made.

"Fix things?" Asher said in a small voice.

Jael gave him a look unimpressed, "How?" He had to clarify because Asher’s good ideas were always catastrophic.

"By not being a copy of my dad and locking Caspian up," Asher muttered, rubbing a hand over his face.

He still had no idea about how he had thought that was such a great idea to begin with.

"We already got past that," Jael said impatiently.

"Not stalking him to the pool after turning down his invite," Asher confessed, steeped in guilt.

Jael had a hard time keeping a straight face, "Getting warmer."

He also wanted to let his boss know that if he had just gone with Caspian, his presence would be more than enough to keep Alphas away.

But the idiot had been clearly looking for a reason to support his dumb idea, so he would have found something anyway.

"Not putting the burden of separation on his shoulders because I’m too pussy to handle it..."

Jael had to admit, he was impressed. He had no idea what Caspian had done to Asher but he would take this new side of him.

"Now you just need to tell him all that and then grovel for forgiveness." He added his two cents.

Asher didn’t doubt that he would be groveling, but he doubted Caspian would let him. The Omega was too good to him.

"You should get back to him," Jael rose to his feet - he had to get back to work.

"And the moment you feel like doing something stupid, call me."

Asher would absolutely be doing that, as a matter of fact, he would drive down to meet Jael first, and try to have a conversation after.

Asher shot to his feet and went for the door on the other side of the room, Jael had handled their conversation well.

The Beta hadn’t even sounded surprised like he already knew and was merely making a confirmation.

Not just of his rut being completely over - although there was the issue that he could have another episode again.

But also about his stance on the burden of his family’s bloodline and how he was letting it affect what he had with his mate.

Asher got to the bedroom and slowed down when he got closer to the bed, missing Caspian’s flowery sweet scent.

Deciding to listen to Caspian instead of dooming his suggestions before even trying it out didn’t fix the innate fear that filled him but he would cross that bridge when he got to it.

Asher gingerly got on the bed, freezing when Caspian immediately rolled over to him although he was fast asleep.

Asher easily pulled him into his arms and held it there, the exhaustion hitting.

He never slept well apart from Caspian, and he was tired of forcing himself to accept that Caspian could never be a part of his life.

It was already morning but Asher was knocked out in no time, falling into a deep and restful sleep.

Caspian was the first to rouse, it was already late morning when he did, and his first sight after opening his eyes was a halo of fire.

He frowned as he stared right into Asher’s sleeping face first thing after he opened his eyes.

The Alpha had their foreheads connected, keeping them as close as was comfortable.

It took a moment for him to process what was going on because, for the first few minutes after waking up, he thought that the entire events of the night before had been an elaborate dream.

But it wasn’t... not if Asher had crossed the distance he put between them and was back to touching him.

Asher’s arm was loosely slung around his waist, the Alpha looking painfully handsome despite being fast asleep.

Caspian gently cupped his face so he wouldn’t stir, the light touch desperate for all its gentleness.

He hadn’t been sleeping great after Asher stopped sharing the bed with him so although he would have preferred to just watch the Alpha sleep, he drifted off again.

He woke up the second time to find Asher awake, the Alpha watching him with a hint of concern in those hazel eyes.

"Have you been awake for long?" Caspian asked, stretching lazily on the bed.

"Roughly an hour," Asher replied quietly.

Caspian rolled out of bed to brush his teeth, making a face at the awful taste in his mouth.

He was done in record time, hurrying out with a bright smile on his face, the tips of his pale blond hair damp.

"Were you waiting for me?" He asked with a contagious smile, crawling right up Asher’s body.

"It’s already late, have you eaten yet?"

All his questions went unanswered, Asher studying him with an odd light in his eyes.

"Don’t you want to ask me anything?" Asher asked a question instead of giving an answer.

Asher’s odd mood put a damper on Caspian’s spirits, making him pull away after reaching out to hold Asher’s face.
