Chapter 91: Chapter 90. Beneath The Chandelier
Most of the conglomerates’ parties were held in luxurious hotels or their lavish residences, but as the pillar of the country’s economy, Mirae’s founding party was held in the national cultural hall, where the government usually held international diplomatic events.
It was glittering without being gaudy; a calculated opulence befitting the name of Mirae, who held the future of the country’s economic prowess. Naturally, the guest tried to match the vibe, wearing something elegant and avoiding anything vulgar.
Like brightly colored hair and an exposed tattoo.
The first thing people notice was a very dashing man coming out of the car to drop the key to the valet. The three-piece suit accentuated a broad shoulder and trained physique as he walked to the back seat and opened the door. In place of a tie, a chocker with black gem and a single platinum letter of J circled his neck, giving an elegant yet slightly wild vibe.
The second thing people noticed was the luscious, strawberry milk hair and an exposed shoulder adorned with ink to the elbow. A menacing whip, coiling protectively as if ready to lash out at anyone who offended her. The soft feature of the face attached to it was hidden behind the sharp eye makeup.
At first, people looked at them in confusion, thinking they were a pair of an actor and an idol that Mirae invited as an MC or entertainer. They did look the part--at least in terms of visuals.
But then again, would Mirae use a celebrity with a tattoo to host its event? The guests didn’t think so. Besides, the celebrities should be very well-known if they were to work at Mirae’s event, and none of the guests felt like they had seen those faces on television.
Not to mention, working celebrities wouldn’t look that intimate with each other. From the way she circled her arm on his elbow and kept patting him, they almost looked like lovers.
Maybe if the man didn’t look so tense, as if he was forced to come to the party.
And then it came to them; the rumors that had been floating around in the upper circle, about the second daughter of the HS Group.
When Amber Lee looked over and gasped in surprise, it was confirmed.
Amber nearly stomped her way toward Sarah, who casually strolled inside the hall after returning her invitation to the frontline staff. She stopped in front of her half-sister, glaring with narrowed eyes. "What are you doing here?!"
"Attending a party?" Sarah tilted her head, managing to look innocent even with the sharp eyeliner.
She wondered if Amber was protesting about her appearance or the fact that she was there at all. From her memory, Amber was there as someone else’s plus one; her school ’friend’ or something. Her eyes did scan Sarah for a bit, but she asked about something else.
"Do you even have the invitation?" Amber asked in a whisper. It seemed like getting associated with a party crasher was worse than getting associated with someone who flashed their tattoo at a high-society event.
Sarah rolled her eyes. "Do you think they’ll let me in otherwise?"
Amber narrowed her eyes curiously. "How?"
Even she had to ask for her acquaintance’s help, and came as a plus one instead of holding onto the invitation herself. But since Sarah brought her bodyguard as a plus one, it would mean she had her own invitation--which was absurd, in Amber’s opinion.
Sarah chuckled and turned toward someone she had spotted a while ago. With a simple smile and a twinkle in her eyes, she wiggled her fingers in a flirty wave toward Daniel, who was surrounded by a group of people already. "I have my way," she said with a wink.
Daniel caught her gaze and cheekily played along, waving back and even casually giving a wink before returning to his conversation. The man truly had a knack for acting on the spot--a good trait for a future chairman.
Amber blinked in surprise. "Huh...you still have a thing with him?"
It was one thing if they were still friends without anything deeper going on, but giving out a full invitation did not scream ’just’ friend. But it didn’t make sense, did it?
Sarah tilted her head, secretly tapping the arm of her agitated, jealous puppy. "Why not?"
"While attending a blind date and..." Amber glanced at Hajin, who managed to put on a perfectly nonchalant face, "...this?"
"Why? We all know our kind is never the faithful ones--I mean, we live with a glaring example," Sarah smirked. "Playing around with others is not the same with legally binding marriage, so...who cares?"
Amber watched her sister giggle with a frown on her face. Not because she disagreed with her, but because she felt a pang of pity--just slightly--at how Sarah could turn like this.
"But, still...you can’t just do it in the open," Amber frowned. If she didn’t know better, Sarah would think her sister was worried about her situation.
But...Amber? Who only cared about her own well-being? Sarah scoffed at the thought and sneered outwardly.
"Oh, are you jealous?"
Amber hissed. "What?!"
"Are you jealous because you can’t bring yours in the open?" Sarah tilted her head. Although speaking quietly, her voice must feel like a thunder strike for Amber, whose eyes had widened. "I mean, of course you can, but it would be a huge scandal and probably end the career of those people, right?"
"You--" Amber almost shouted indignantly, but managed to hold herself back and returned to a hiss as she stepped even closer to Sarah. "What do you know?"
Everything--Sarah curled her eyes. As someone who had to act as her slave a lot of time in the past, she knew every dirt Amber had, everyone she slept with. Every male celebrity she took as playthings by giving them sponsorship in return.
"I don’t care how many idols you played with, Eonni, as long as you do take care of them as you promised," she whispered. "I’ll just give you one friendly warning."
Amber frowned deeply; her pupils shaking in dread.
"Don’t mess with the minors," Sarah’s voice turned low and sharp. "I’m going to drag you down if you keep at it."
"You--"
Sarah smiled sweetly and patted her sister’s shoulder. "Let’s enjoy the party, Eonni."
Leaving her shaking sister behind, she walked further inside the gall with Hajin in hand. Looking around while trying to spot a refreshment table, Sarah gradually spotted her family members among the many guests.
Her father was obvious, although he came with a much younger woman than his supposedly legal wife. Sarah had to admire his shamelessness, taking his mistress in the open without ever talking about divorce with his wife.
As expected, Mason was also there, talking to his peers and making connections, probably. The first wife was among other madams, the older kind, together with the aunt. On the other side of the hall, among the younger madams, were the third wife.
"Oh, look who we have here," Sarah smirked. This one was also bold, coming to a party where her husband was taking his young mistress. What a mess of a family. "I had thought she would come with my uncle, but..."
"I don’t see him anywhere, Master," Hajin informed her.
Sarah tapped her chin in contemplation. "Do you think he got the invitation for her?"
"Maybe," Hajin took a glass of mocktail from the passing waiter for Sarah. "It’ll be too suspicious if they came together, after all."
"People should have been suspicious since a long time ago," Sarah scoffed.
"Maybe they do and don’t care, Master."
Well...she literally just said people were having affairs all the time. It wouldn’t faze anyone if the wife had something with the younger brother while the husband was openly playing around with younger mistresses. It wasn’t like the wife or the younger brother had much power in the company.
"Hmm...that’s true," Sarah nodded. She wanted to use that fact to put pressure on an already fragile and cracked relationship, but if it was only an affair, it wouldn’t be too effective.
"Let’s wait for the little spy--oh, you’re quite popular, Master," Hajin whispered, nudging her toward someone who stomped her way toward her.
Like...literally stomping.
"Pfft--" Sarah chuckled at the sour expression on Ruby’s face. It seemed like her mother brought her along, and she must be livid seeing Daniel still act cordial with her.
"How can you be here?!" she hissed.
"How can you? Why do you think you can come and I can’t?" Sarah snickered. "It’s not like you buy the invitation with your own money."
"You--" she clenched her fists before crossing her arms and clicking her tongue haughtily. "If you have the invitation, you should have taken Jasper."
"Pfft--what?" Sarah widened her eyes in disbelief before laughing out loud until her shoulder shook and she had to hold onto Hajin for balance. "Did you just suggest I take one of the people who drugged me to this place? Oh, God...do they put audacity on sale?"
Ruby looked around in panic and hissed, as if telling Sarah to not say stuff like that out loud. "He didn’t know anything about that!"
"Did he, now? Is that what he tells you?" Sarah tilted her head, leaning forward to whisper very, very quietly just as the other girl wished. "Then you might as well tell him to stop doing drugs himself."
Ruby stepped back with a start and widened her eyes. "...what?!"
"It’s not too late now, but who knows if he become addicted," Sarah shrugged. "At any rate, it’s rather traceable, so tell him to stop or someone will come after him--either the police or the gangsters, whoever faster."
Ruby was stunned still, the information gave her no leeway to think about confronting Sarah on her relationship with Kang Daniel. Sarah smiled and patted the girl’s shoulder, just as she did to Amber. "Have fun!"
Because Sarah did. It hadn’t been half an hour since she arrived, but she was already having a lot of fun. Much more than she thought she would.
