Chapter 65 - 65 65 Exchange
65: Chapter 65: Exchange 65: Chapter 65: Exchange Violet contemplated this and narrowed her eyes, oblivious to how her smile had transformed at that moment.
“So, you want to learn magic from me…” She repeated slowly, her eyes fixated on Rolin as if she had found her prey, the corners of her mouth slightly raised.
This had made Rolin, who had barely gathered her courage, feel an intense unease, like that of impending death.
It was as if she were a lone, pitiful sheep encountering a starving wolf.
The direction of Violet’s gaze indicated she wished to swallow her whole, bones and flesh included!
Violet never thought that her magic practice would attract such a visitor.
She didn’t know whether she should consider this as a stroke of luck or misfortune.
Violet believed Rolin must have sensed the magic she emitted while summoning the undead, which in turn prompted this request.
Learning magic was not something shameful, but it could be something that could take a life.
So this matter was as crucial as life and death.
Violet had to contemplate all possible issues and deal with them before they occurred.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t accept such a request that brought no notable benefit to her lightly.
As a contingency, Violet was ready to refuse Rolin if she couldn’t resolve her doubt.
If Rolin was unwilling to honestly answer her questions in the ensuing conversation…
Violet had numerous reasons to believe that Rolin definitely had something unspeakable to hide, which was why she sought her out.
If she wasn’t coerced, why else would she risk danger and approach her with fear?
The coercion may not necessarily come from others; it could be due to her own circumstances, like an unseen illness, perhaps?
With this in mind, Violet narrowed her eyes, her gaze landing on Rolin’s unnaturally white hair.
Even though her line of thought had nothing to do with Rolin’s choices, the outcomes surprisingly coincided.
Violet wasn’t even aware that when she contemplated this aspect, a cold glint flashed in her eyes, sending chills down anyone who saw it.
But at the moment, only Rolin in the hall could see the change in her gaze.
Rolin instinctively swallowed saliva, only to discover how dry and tasteless her mouth had become due to fear.
Then, Violet gave it some thought, straightened her posture, and began speaking seriously to Rolin.
“Learning magic is not impossible, but gaining something means losing something in return.
Are you prepared for the sacrifices?”
Violet said this to gauge Rolin’s genuine reaction.
To see what Rolin was truly willing to give up in return.
But for Rolin, everything twisted when it reached her ears.
Although she didn’t see anything related to the Undead Lich, it didn’t mean she could deny that Violet was not the Undead Lich.
What if all this was just an illusionary disguise as a demon?
When Violet asked this question, Rolin’s suspicion of her being the Undead Lich deepened even more.
It must be the Undead Lich as only they practice equivalent exchange.
They may seem hypocritical and take more than what is due.
But for human mages, equivalent exchange is merely a joke.
They can just take what they want, so why pretend to be virtuous, right?
From this point, she could tell that Violet was definitely not a human mage.
Everything seemed to happen just like Rolin had envisioned.
But she entirely misunderstood what Violet was trying to convey.
Violet merely wanted to express that there was no such thing as power without a price.
To gain such power, one must pay with sacrifices and rewards.
All she wanted was to test Rolin!
“So it truly wants to take something from me?” Rolin smiled bitterly and helplessly.
Then she let go of her magic mace, slowly knelt down on one knee.
If she had to choose between living and losing her soul, Rolin was prepared to relinquish her soul.
Even if the one she kneeled to was an evil Undead Lich, as long as it granted her life, what couldn’t she do in return?
After kneeling on one knee, she spoke in the most humble tone, “If you don’t mind teaching me the knowledge of magic, I am willing to swear with my soul to serve you loyally forever until death, and this loyalty shall be devoted to you with my soul.”
She spoke while placing her hand on her heart, knelt on her left knee, stretched out her right hand on her heart while holding her left arm above her head, in the tradition of a mage’s pledge.
This gesture was something that a mage might only perform once in a lifetime because it represents loyalty to a teacher or a master!
The extended left arm represented a request, the hand over her heart represented loyalty, and the kneeling on one knee represented her submission.
Only a mage apprentice or vassal has the honor to perform such a ritual.
Violet slightly nodded, her eyes fixated on Rolin as she fell into thought.
A woman suddenly appeared to learn magic from her and said she would offer all of herself.
No matter who, it would take some time to think this matter through.
Although she knew what was going on and could explain it logically, she still felt it was strange.
Something was off, did she expose her identity?
She frowned, tapping her fingers on the table as she fell into deep thought, while Rolin remained kneeling.
Until she received a response, she could choose to get up.
However, sincerity and loyalty often require a sacrifice of personal dignity.
During Violet’s contemplation, if Rolin stood up, then all the previous efforts would be in vain, and her self-willed action would definitely leave a bad impression on Violet.
Therefore, until she received Violet’s response, she could only continue kneeling.
