Chapter 82: HARD TO PART WAYS

{ " The reason it hurts so much to separate is because our souls are connected."}

I turned to Rou, my expression firm. "We need to get back to Bay Shifter Pack and handle the situation at the jail cell. The triplets plus Fennel are locked up, but I have a feeling it won’t be for long."

Rou nodded in agreement. "Then we should hurry back. I’ll wait here for General Tiger to arrive with the border guards. Once they’re in place, everything should return to normal."

Freyr, standing beside me, spoke up. "Rou, once the guards are stationed, you should come to Bay Shifter Pack. I have a feeling there’s more going on with Aqua than we realize, and together, we might uncover the truth."

I hummed in agreement. "That’s a good idea."

Rou gave a firm nod, understanding the importance of our next moves. Without another word, Freyr and I turned and rushed back toward Bay Shifter Pack, leaving Rou at the border. As we ran, Freyr shifted back into his disguised form, blending seamlessly with the surroundings.

Half an hour later, we reached the meeting point where General Tiger was leading a regiment of one hundred border guards, accompanied by Commander Flora. The air was thick with tension, but as we approached, the guards immediately recognized our presence. In perfect unison, they bared their necks in submission and their voices boomed in greeting.

"Greetings, Alpha! Greetings, Sister Freya!"

I stole a glance at Freyr and noticed the barely contained amusement on Flora’s face. A small, knowing smile played on General Tiger’s lips, but he remained composed. The scene might have been serious, but I couldn’t deny that Flora was struggling to hold back laughter at the formality with which Freyr had been addressed.

Despite the levity, the weight of our mission settled upon me once more. There was no time to waste. The situation at the jail needed immediate attention, and I had a feeling that whatever we were about to uncover would change everything.

Rou was waiting at the border, standing tall and resolute with the guards beside him. His piercing gaze met mine as we approached, and he gave a curt nod. "You’re here. Good. The Alpha beast of Rogourau is waiting for you at the border. We need to move quickly."

I returned the nod, feeling the weight of responsibility settle over me. "We will guard Sagstone Mountain and its beast. But first, we must rush back to the jail cell. Commander Flora needs to accompany us. There is an urgent matter that requires immediate attention."

Flora’s brows furrowed at my words, but she did not question me. Instead, she simply nodded and fell into step beside us as we turned back toward the Bay Shifter Pack jail. The unease in my chest grew with every step, and I could tell that Freyr felt the same. His tension was palpable, mirroring my own.

As soon as we arrived at the jail, chaos greeted us. Guards were running frantically, their expressions a mixture of fear and confusion. They rushed toward us, bowed their necks in respect, and one of them hurriedly reported, "Aqua and Fennel have vanished into thin air, and the triplets... they are unconscious in their cell."

I clenched my fists. "Take me there."

We moved swiftly through the corridors, my pulse pounding. The sight before me was worse than I had imagined. Aqua’s cell door was shattered, and so was Fennel’s. But what truly made my breath catch was the triplets’ cell. Their bodies lay motionless inside, their skin pale and lifeless.

Flora wasted no time, prying open the door and rushing to check on them. The moment her fingers brushed against their cold skin; she gasped. "They’re dead."

"No," Freyr said sharply, stepping forward. "They are not dead. They are in a comatose state. This is how vampires sleep."

He knelt beside them, his sharp eyes scanning their forms. Then, as he turned one of the bodies, he let out a low hiss. "They’ve been turned."

A shiver ran down my spine. "What do you mean?"

Freyr pointed to the fresh puncture wounds on their necks. "They’ve been made into vampires. Either Aqua or Fennel had already become hybrids before their escape. And now, they’ve turned the triplets."

Flora looked between us; confusion clear in her eyes. "Hybrids? Vampires? What does this mean for us*?"

I exhaled sharply, piecing it together. "It means we may have more than just the Rougarou to deal with. Aqua and Fennel laid a trap and it was so well executed.

Here’s your scene written in Tor’s first-person POV with dialogue and description:

I turned to Flora, my voice sharp with urgency. "Send the guards to follow their trail. I have a feeling they’re headed to the beach and will get into the boat that left the harbor. That’s the only place they would run to."

Flora nodded without hesitation and rushed out, the commander and his guards following swiftly behind. The air in the room still crackled with tension when Freyr stepped closer and whispered, "We need to be alone. I need to check on the triplets."

I swallowed hard, my chest tightening. Dai, Dayra, and Hali had been unconscious since the attack, their bodies unnervingly still. Freyr knelt beside them, his fingers hovering over their foreheads as he murmured a quiet incantation. A flicker of magic pulsed through the room.

A long silence followed before he exhaled sharply and stood up. His eyes met mine, dark with certainty. "They’ve been turned into vampires."

The words slammed into me like a blow. My breath hitched. "What?"

"When they awaken, they’ll need blood," he continued grimly. "And that means they’ll cause chaos... They’ll feed on the shifters."

I clenched my jaw, a curse slipping through my teeth. "Damn it." This was worse than I had imagined. A newborn vampire was pure carnage an an unrelenting hunger wrapped in a fragile shell of control. Three of them? It would be a bloodbath.

Freyr’s expression didn’t waver. "I need to take them to Paradise Coven. My mother will know what to do."

The thought of him leaving hit me like a dagger to the ribs. I wasn’t ready for this. Not now. Not so soon. But I had no choice. I forced myself to nod. "Fine. But I don’t like it."

His gaze softened. "I understand how you feel, but we need to act fast, or this will be a disaster."

I let out a frustrated huff, running a hand through my hair. "I’ll deal with the Bay Shifter Pack if they inquire about Freya," I muttered. "For now, just get them out of here before this turns into a war."

Freyr gave a firm nod, and just like that, the weight of the decision settled on my shoulders.

I instructed the guards, watching as they carefully lifted the unconscious bodies and wrapped them securely. Without wasting time, we left for the border that led to Hanka Island, the weight of our mission pressing heavily on my shoulders.

We stood at the mouth of the caves, the air thick with the scent of damp earth and salt from the distant sea. The guards placed the bodies inside a large wrapper sack, securing it tightly before stepping back. Freyr took it from them, effortlessly carrying the bundle over his shoulder. Without another word, we entered the caves, our steps echoing against the stone walls as we moved forward.

When we finally emerged on Hanka Island, a deep, thunderous rumble shook the ground beneath us. I stiffened, exchanging a glance with Freyr. The island had sensed our presence. Its ancient magic stirred, shifting the very air around us.

Freyr lowered the sack onto the ground, his movements precise yet careful. My chest tightened. This was it.

His eyes met mine, filled with the weight of our unspoken words. And then, in a blur of desperate urgency, we collided.

Our mouths met in a passionate kiss, raw and consuming, our bodies molding together as if time itself had shrunk down to this one moment. The reality of our impending separation wrapped around us like a vice, making us reckless, making us take and give in equal measure. My hands fisted into his hair, holding him to me, unwilling to let go. His fingers dug into my waist, pressing me impossibly close.

When the kiss finally broke, I was breathless, my chest rising and falling in erratic rhythm. My lips tingle, still burning from the intensity of it. I barely had time to speak before Freyr lowered his head, and then I felt it.

The sharp sting of his fangs pierced my neck.

A shudder wracked my body as warmth spread through me, pleasure laced with pain. The wet slurping sound of him drinking from me filled the heavy silence, and I groaned, gripping his shoulders as my entire being surrendered to the sensation. His lips moved against my skin, the slow pull of his feeding sending waves of heat through me.

Magic crackled between us, ancient and primal. Our beasts stirred, merging in a way that was as intimate as it was dangerous. I could feel him—his hunger, his need, his love—melding with mine, creating something untamed and all-consuming.

Freyr pulled back, his tongue gliding over the bite marks, sealing them closed. My head swam, the loss of contact leaving a strange emptiness in its wake. But before I could think too much about it, his fingers grasped my chin, tilting my face back up to his. And then we kissed again. This time, it was slow. Deep. A lingering goodbye laced with promises unspoken.

And I hated it to the core.
