Chapter 81: ROU’S ADVICE AND CONCERNS
{""A problem well stated is a problem half solved."}
Rou’s shock was almost comical. I knew then, without a doubt, that old Althea’s words had been true. The union of the two breeds, bound by Hanka magic, would change the realm. Rou had always dismissed Althea as nothing more than an old woman spinning riddles, but now, faced with reality, he was rattled.
We watched as he paced back and forth, muttering under his breath, his fingers rubbing at his chin, then dragging across his forehead in frustration. Then, abruptly, he turned to Kayne, his gaze raking over him from head to toe. A beat of silence passed before he suddenly burst into laughter, his voice echoing through the chamber.
"You do know," he said between chuckles, "that your father’s disguises were never as good as yours? I caught him once, and we had one hell of a fight. I had never found such an opponent who could work like that."
Kayne’s expression shifted. The flicker of sadness in his eyes was unmistakable, though he kept his posture straight. "What did my father discover?" he asked, his voice measured but heavy with something deeper—something unspoken.
Rou’s laughter faded, and his shoulders slumped, the weight of memory pressing against him. "We found the nest," he admitted. "Your father suspected there was another... one hidden within Blood Stone Mountain. He rushed back to Paradise Coven to confirm his theory." Rou exhaled sharply. "But the next day, he was dead."
Silence settled like a thick fog.
"I tried to investigate," Rou continued, "but Lord Marcel’s rise to power changed everything. The guards I once knew were replaced. Any information I might have uncovered was buried." He shook his head, jaw tightening. "And then there was the scent." His eyes darkened. "Only Sierra, your mother, could mask the scent of a Rougarou or any shifter wolf or Lycan"
The words hung in the air between us, heavy with implications.
"But Mother thought the scent belonged to a Lycan Shifter and the first time I went back to Paradise coven after meeting she was surprised that there was another Lycan.?" Freyr asked, his brows furrowing in confusion.
Rou smiled knowingly and gave a small nod. "That’s because the Lycan wolf is a breed born to rule the Bay Shifter Pack. He carries traces of all the beasts that exist within it—including the Rougarou. That’s why the scent seemed familiar."
We stood there, absorbing his words, the weight of his explanation settling over us. The implications were vast, unraveling truths we had never considered.
I pressed on, curiosity gnawing at me. "What about Althea?"
Rou chuckled, shaking his head slightly. "Althea Gale... she was a powerful seer. Your grandmother’s sister. She came from the Gale bloodline and saw things most of us could only dream of understanding. She prophesied many things, things that should have remained hidden." His expression darkened slightly. "I never thought her words would ever ring true."
"Yet here we are," I said, meeting Rou’s gaze head-on. Freyr and I are mated. We met on Hanka Island, and do you know what else we discovered?"
I smirked at him, waiting for his reaction. Rou’s eyes narrowed, and he quickly raised his hands in surrender. "No, no—I don’t want to know," he said hastily. "The more people who know, the more dangerous this situation becomes."
Freyr and I exchanged amused glances before bursting into laughter. Rou’s dramatics never failed to entertain. Once our laughter subsided, Rou’s expression turned serious. "Does anyone else know about this?" he asked.
I nodded. "My Beta, Spark, and his mate, Wave. Commander Flora and General Tiger as well."
Freyr added, "My mother, my sister, and one elder from the Coven know about us."
Rou’s eyes widened in disbelief. He turned to Freyr, his tone laced with curiosity. "Your mother... does she accept that you’re mated to a shifter wolf?"
Freyr chuckled, shaking his head. "She knows that I am mated to the most powerful Lycan in the land—the Alpha of the Bay Shifter Pack."
Rou’s expression darkened; his voice steady but heavy with warning. "You must understand that your mating will bring change, but it will not be easy for either of you. The ones behind the vampire Blood Stone coven will not let you go unpunished. You have unknowingly foiled plans that have been in motion for years, and both breeds have vested interests in your downfall."
My jaw tightened. "What are you saying?"
Rou’s gaze was unwavering. "Your father believed that the true mastermind behind this sought war with the Bay Shifter Pack. But that was just a distraction. The real goal was the gold hidden deep within Sagstone Mountain, the beast that guards it, and the lands surrounding Ragar Mountain."
A low growl rumbled in my chest. "What do you mean?"
Rou exhaled and looked at me with something almost like reverence. "Ragar Mountain is where the power of the Gale family originated. It is where Lycans are born."
Freyr took a step forward, his voice filled with awe. "Are you saying that Tor is not the first Lycan to awaken in the Bay Shifter Pack?"
Rou shook his head. "No, he is not. It has been centuries. The last Lycan to awaken was Tor’s ancestor—powerful and bold. But in his final days, greed consumed his heart. He wanted what could never be his—immortality. A gift only the Moon Goddess can grant." Silence stretched between us, thick with understanding. Rou continued, his tone grave. "Lycans wished to live as long as vampires, but death is inevitable. No matter how strong, how powerful, even the mightiest will fall."
I swallowed hard, my voice barely above a whisper. "He had a bad ending?"
Rou nodded solemnly. "He did. But not because he was weak—because people fear what they cannot control. Just like the Bay Shifter wolves fear the Rougarou and always seek to hunt them down." He paused, his gaze piercing. "But in truth, power itself is not something to be feared... unless the one who wields it seeks to use it for selfish gain."
His words settled heavily in my chest. Was this my fate too? A force too powerful to be left alone, destined to be hunted? I clenched my fists, determination hardening within me. I would not fall like my ancestor. I would forge my oath.
Rou’s voice carried the weight of prophecy, his gaze locked onto mine with unwavering intensity.
"Alpha Tor, the winds of change have begun," he said. "You have discovered the truth, though not as early as you should have. Now, you must ensure that Sagstone Mountain is protected. The Rougarou will always heed your command. Your Lycan is powerful enough to stand against what’s coming, and even your mate’s power is immense."
I listened intently; my pulse steady but my mind racing.
"Freyr is the son of Kayne," Rou continued, his tone deliberate. "He carries the Kayne Blood Stone, making him the most powerful vampire in the realm. That is why Lord Marcel fears him. I’d wager that the plan to breed the vampire Blood Stone Bugs was devised specifically to create a weapon that could make the Kayne family cower, to keep them away as the Coven prepared for war against the Bay Shifter Pack."
I exhaled sharply, the realization settling in my bones.
"But the awakening of the Lycan must have thrown them off," Rou added, his expression grim. "It must have disrupted their carefully laid plans. And that is why Lord Marcel will stop at nothing to bring you down. He will even go as far as to collude with the Steel and Cobalt families to see you fall."
"We have taken down the Cobalt family," I explained to Rou, my voice firm.
His brows furrowed, his sharp gaze narrowing. "Is Aqua still alive?" he asked.
A strange unease crept up my spine, but I nodded. "She is."
Freyr stepped forward, his expression tense as he waited for Rou’s response. The bad feeling gnawing at the back of my neck deepened.
Rou exhaled slowly, shaking his head. "Then you have not taken down the Cobalt family."
His words struck like a blade.
"As long as Aqua lives, their bloodline survives. You don’t understand—her body is infused with the Blood Stone Bugs. She is what you might call... a hybrid."
My jaw tightened, my hands clenching into fists.
"She fooled me," I growled, my fists clenching. "I thought I removed the Blood Stone Bugs from her body."
Rou shook his head, his expression grim. "There is no removing the bugs. Aqua is twisted—her body is a walking nest."
A cold dread settled in my chest. "How is that possible?" I muttered.
Rou’s gaze darkened. "Aqua killed one of the Rougarou’s best and drank its blood. That act alone tainted her, but she went even further—she fused her mind with the Blood Stone Bugs and her shifter wolf. What she has become is far worse than any of us could have imagined. She isn’t just a hybrid... she’s an abomination."
"What the fuck? "Freyr cursed. "Where is she?" He turned to me in question.
"At the Bay shifter prison cells. I am even wondering if this was her plan all along as she is one evil woman who will stop at nothing to get her way"
