Chapter 80: A NEST IN BAY SHIFTER PACK

{"Things don’t turn up in this world until somebody turns them up"}

Freyr stiffened beside me, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white. I could feel his rage, simmering beneath the surface, barely contained. Gale bristled at the sight before us, the massive nest hanging from the jagged ceiling of the cave, pulsing as though it were alive. The bloodstone bugs inside writhed and crawled over one another, their translucent shells glistening with crimson streaks.

"By the moon goddess" I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper.

Freyr exhaled sharply, nostrils flaring. "This isn’t just a smuggling operation," he said through gritted teeth. "This is a breeding ground and I wonder how long it has been here. The border guards, the commanders and the generals, how did they not notice this nest?"

My stomach twisted at the realization, and by their size, if the nest opened, they could strip a body of its essence in minutes, leaving behind nothing but dust and bone. And Fennel, that bastard had been transporting them under our noses for who knows how long.

I forced myself to focus, stepping forward cautiously. The ground beneath us was damp, slick with something I didn’t want to consider. "We need to burn this place down," I said. "Every last bug."

Freyr nodded but didn’t move. Burning with something deeper than anger, his eyes remained locked on the nest. "That is the only way to stop them"

I clenched my jaw. He was right. The Colbat family hadn’t just betrayed the Bay Shifter Pack; they had aligned themselves with something far more sinister. A sharp echoing sound echoed from above.

Both Freyr and I snapped our gazes upward just as the nest trembled, and then it began to split open. Freyr exhaled sharply, his chest rising and falling with controlled breaths. The cave reeked of death and decayed blood; the scent thick enough to choke on. My wolf stirred uneasily, unsettled by the eerie silence that followed. I stepped forward, my boots squelching against the remains of the bloodstone bugs. The queen’s carcass lay in the center, its severed body oozing dark ichor onto the cavern floor. Freyr stood over it, his usually pristine appearance now a horrifying sight, his clothes drenched in blackened blood, his silver eyes glowing like molten steel.

I let out a low whistle. "Remind me not to piss you off."

Freyr smirked, running a hand through his blood-slicked hair. "That goes without saying, Tor. This is all the Paradise Coven’s fault"

I turned to the cave entrance, my senses reaching beyond the rocky walls. Rou was still outside, standing guard, but something felt. Off. The air carried a strange tension, an undercurrent of something lurking just beyond our reach.

Freyr must have sensed it too because he stiffened. "We’re not alone."

A guttural growl echoed from the tunnel, and a deep, menacing voice followed.

"So, the Bay Shifter Alpha Tor Gale and a Vampire are here at last."

The sound of footsteps—heavy, deliberate—approached. Gale bristled. I turned to Freyr, eyes narrowing. "How did we not sense their presence?" My breath caught in my throat, and I felt my wolf freeze inside me. My own family?

Freyr turned to me, his eyes narrowed, waiting for my reaction. I took a step forward, studying the old woman. Her blind eyes held a sharpness that suggested she saw more than anyone else in the room. The way she spoke my name—Gale—sent a strange, unfamiliar chill through my bones.

"Who the hell are you?" I asked again, my voice lower this time, more controlled.

The woman tapped her cane against the cave floor and let out a dry chuckle. "You carry the blood of the ancient line, boy. Your ancestor stood where you stand now, hundreds of years ago. But you have forgotten your roots."

My fists clenched. "Stop speaking in riddles and tell me what you know."

She tilted her head. "I am Althea, last of the Seers of the Bay Shifter Pack. Your great-grandmother was my sister."

The air in the cave thickened with an unnatural weight. My heartbeat thundered in my ears.

"You lie," I growled. "My family—"

"—has been deceived," she finished for me, her voice gentle but firm. "The Colbat family manipulated the Bay Shifter Pack long before you became Alpha, and that is why I remained hidden away

Freyr, who had been silent until now, finally spoke, his voice hoarse. "You know about me? You seem not surprised by my presence.

Althea nodded. "Of course. You are Dunco Kayne’s blood line. I can scent it from a mile away. Dunco Kayne discovered the truth too late. He tried to warn your kind, but he was silenced. Just like they will try to silence you."

I exhaled slowly, trying to process everything. If what she was saying was true, then this betrayal ran deeper than I had ever imagined. The Colbat family wasn’t just corrupt, they were the reason my pack had been suffering for years.

Freyr stepped closer to Althea, his voice quiet but dangerous. "They will silence us? Who was my father trying to meet before he died?"

Althea’s expression darkened. "The real mastermind behind all of this. Someone far more dangerous than Desmond Marcel. Someone who has been pulling the strings in the shadows."

I exchanged a look with Freyr.

"Then tell us," I demanded.

Althea let out a long breath. "His name is—"

A sharp whistle cut through the cave, and suddenly, the walls shook with the force of an explosion outside.

"You need to go and trust no one!" Althea yelled, her voice echoing off the cave walls. She pointed toward the dungeon entrance we had come from. "Stay alive and don’t let anyone test your mating bond. The seer in the Bay Shifter Pack will help you. And as for you—" she turned sharply toward Freyr, her moon-colored eyes narrowing, "your mother, Sierra, needs to assist you in hiding the scent of your mating."

Freyr tensed beside me, his jaw clenching, but Althea wasn’t finished.

"Take Tor to Paradise Coven to meet your mother," she commanded. "She will understand what I mean."

I stepped forward, my pulse racing. "Althea, Rou the Rogourau beast is outside. We need to warn him!"

She huffed, shaking her head. "The old man can protect himself. I will find you when the time is right. But right now—" her eyes flickered to the crumbling ceiling, dust and small rocks beginning to rain down on us, "—the caves are caving in, and you need to stay alive."

The moment she finished speaking, the earth beneath us trembled violently. A deep, thunderous crack echoed through the cavern. No time left. We took off and ran. The cave groaned as if alive, rocks tumbling from above. We sprinted for the exit, the scent of damp stone and old blood thick in my lungs. Rou had already shifted into his human form and was rushing toward us. But the second he spotted Freyr, he stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes widened in utter disbelief.

"What the—"

Freyr didn’t stop. He bolted past Rou, heading straight for the ocean. Without hesitation, he dove into the dark water.

Rou’s jaw dropped. "Did he just—"

"Move!" I snarled, grabbing Rou by the wrist and yanking him forward. The deafening roar of the collapsing cave filled the air behind us.

We hit the water just as the cavern gave in, massive boulders crashing down where we had stood mere seconds ago. The impact sent a wave rushing over us, swallowing everything in its path.

Darkness. Cold. Silence. I kicked upward, lungs burning, searching for air. And then—light. I broke the surface, gasping. Rou came up beside me, coughing. I whipped around, searching. Freyr was already ahead, swimming toward the shore. Alive.

I exhaled in relief, then turned back to Rou. His face was pale, eyes still locked on where the cave had been.

"What the hell just happened?" he muttered and his eyes were fixed on Frey"

I met his gaze, the weight of Althea’s warning pressing down on me. "Let us get to shore and I will explain" And with that, we swam toward the shore. Toward whatever awaited us next.

Out of breath, we stumbled onto the shore, water dripping from our clothes as we moved quickly, staying out of sight. The night was thick around us, the air heavy with salt and damp earth. Rou led us to a hidden cave, one that blended seamlessly into the rocky cliffs.

Only when we were safely inside did he whirl around, eyes sharp and hostile as he faced Freyr.

I stepped in before he could speak. "This is Freyr Kayne. From Paradise Coven."

Rou froze. His eyes widened, then his jaw dropped slightly. I pressed on before he could react.

"Freyr is my mate."

Rou cursed under his breath, his hand dragging over his face as he began pacing the small space, muttering to himself. His boots scraped against the cave floor, frustration radiating from every tense movement. Finally, he stopped, turning his sharp gaze to Freyr. His brows furrowed deeply.

"You are Dunco’s son. "Freyr gave a single nod. Rou let out a bark of laughter, the sound echoing off the stone walls. "You carry the Kayne stone. No wonder you can pull off that disguise so damn well." He shook his head, still chuckling. "Your Pa fooled me once, and now you’ve done it again."

He rubbed his beard, his amusement still lingering, but then his gaze snapped to me. His lips curled into a grin, eyes glinting with mischief.

"Alpha Tor, I must have misheard you," he drawled. "But did you just say that you are mated?"

I held his stare, my expression unwavering.

"Yes," I confirmed, my voice steady.

Rou whistled low, shaking his head in disbelief. "Well, shit."
