Chapter 62: PLANNED INFILTRATION

Chapter 62: PLANNED INFILTRATION

{"Opportunities don’t happen, you create them."}

When I arrived home, I was met with an unexpected sight, royal guards standing rigidly at my door. My gaze swept over them before settling on the man who had undoubtedly summoned them. Lord Marcel stood in waiting, his dark eyes scanning me with unreadable intent. I clenched my jaw, gritting my teeth as I approached.

"To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit, Lord Marcel?" I asked, keeping my voice even.

A slow grin stretched across his face. "You have yet to give me an update on the mission I assigned you."

I gave a curt nod and stepped past him, pushing the door open. "Come in."

He followed, his black robe sweeping the floor as he moved with an air of effortless authority. As I shut the door behind us, the guards remained outside, standing vigilant.

I focused inward, channeling the power of the Kayne stone to scan for any trace of the Bloodstone bug in his mind link. Nothing. He didn’t even flinch, oblivious to my probing as he continued his slow, deliberate stroll deeper into my home.

Lowering himself onto the couch with a practiced elegance, he crossed one leg over the other and studied his surroundings. "Freyr, your house is ever cold," he mused. "Perhaps it’s time to redecorate, especially now that Aurora is staying here."

I chuckled, walking over to the liquor cabinet. Pulling out a bottle of whiskey, I uncapped it, pouring two glasses before handing one to him. He took it, though I noticed the way his fingers curled around it, guarded, cautious.

Taking a sip of my drink, I leaned back into my seat. "Aurora won’t be staying here much longer. I plan to have her move in with Ma. I’m selling this house."

Lord Marcel’s brows lifted in surprise. "Oh? And why is that?"

I swirled the whiskey in my glass, watching the amber liquid catch the light. "Ma could use the company. She’s still mourning Pa’s death, and it’ll do her good to bond with Aurora. Nessa will be around too, keeping them both on their toes."

His expression darkened ever so slightly as if dissatisfied with my response. He held back whatever retort had formed on his tongue, taking a measured sip instead.

"I must say, I was surprised when you announced your relationship with Aurora after all this time," he finally said, his voice casual but laced with curiosity. "What changed your mind?"

I met his gaze and smirked. "Ma convinced me. She said I’m not getting any younger."

Lord Marcel let out a hum of amusement, but I could sense the weight of his unspoken thoughts. "Sierra Kayne can be scary, did she threaten you?"

Lord Marcel swirled the whiskey in his glass, watching me with that ever-present smirk of his. "Tell me, Freyr... did Ma threaten you into this? She is one scary woman."

I let out a deep laugh, shaking my head. "Ma is tough, no doubt. But she’d never force me when it comes to my love life." I leaned back against the couch, taking a slow sip before adding, "After talking with her, I simply decided it was time to announce that I’d be with Aurora."

Feigning a huff, I continued, "Though Aurora is sickly, she’s a fine woman. Being with her would be a lifetime achievement."

It was a blatant lie.

Kayne, my beast, snarled in my mind, his voice sharp as a blade. ’Our lifetime mate would have a fit if he heard you.’

Suppressing a chuckle, I focused on Marcel, knowing full well he was studying me with keen interest. He finally took a sip of his whiskey, his gaze unreadable, before speaking again. "You do realize that Nessa has feelings for Aurora, don’t you?"

I forced my expression into one of mild surprise, widening my eyes just enough to make it believable. "I had no idea. I always thought they were just close friends."

Marcel chuckled, tilting his glass slightly. "You should be careful with Nessa. Don’t take her lightly. She’s been in love with Aurora for years. Unless, of course, you’re ready to accommodate her and have two wives."

I tilted my head, pretending to consider his words. "I only just started dating Aurora. The matter of marriage will come later."

Something shifted in his expression, his eyes glinted with quiet amusement as if he was pleased with my answer. From the way he was acting, this wasn’t just about me. This was about Cassius.

Marcel leaned back, a slow smirk curling his lips. "Take your time."

Agitation churned within me the longer Lord Marcel lingered in my home. His presence had a way of gnawing at my patience, so I decided to hasten the conversation.

"I leave for the Bay Shifter Pack tomorrow night," I informed him, watching for his reaction. "Word is, they’ve summoned the commanders and generals of the army. I’ll disguise myself as one of them and gather information about the Alpha Lycan."

Marcel leaned forward, his interest piqued. His dark eyes gleamed with excitement as he grinned. "That’s a brilliant plan, Freyr. I expect you’ll return with valuable intel. I’d love to know more about this Lycan."

I gave him a curt nod, not bothering to mask my impatience. "Before you go, there’s something I need from you."

His brows lifted in mild surprise before he raised a hand in invitation. "Shoot."

I met his gaze with a serious expression. "Cassius has visited Ma’s home twice. I have no idea why, and frankly, I don’t like it. If you could keep him away from Kayne’s home, I’d appreciate it."

Marcel’s smirk faltered for a split second before his brows furrowed in thought. He studied me in silence, then gave a slow nod. "Consider it done."

Satisfied, I stood as he did, signaling the end of our meeting. But before he turned to leave, he glanced at me with a knowing smirk. "Did you know Elder Dante has been gathering herbs for Ma around Bloodstone Mountain?"

I chuckled, shaking my head. "Like I said, Ma is a scary woman. She must have ordered him to do it. And let’s be honest, Dante would never refuse. Not while he’s still drowning in guilt over Pa’s death."

Marcel let out an amused chuckle, then inclined his head. "You’ve got a point. But I don’t trust anyone, and I know that Dante is one old man who can never be underestimated even though he never raised an opinion in the coven council.

Without another word, he swept out the door, his black robes trailing behind him. I exhaled sharply, shaking off the lingering tension. Lord Marcel played his games well—but so did I.

After Marcel left, I locked the doors behind him, sealing out the lingering weight of his presence. Without hesitation, I grabbed the bottle of liquor and strode onto the balcony. The cool night air wrapped around me as I lifted the bottle to my lips, taking long, deep pulls. The burn traced down my throat, settling into my stomach like liquid fire, numbing the restlessness stirring inside me.

Hours slipped away unnoticed as I stood there, lost in thought, the city humming faintly below. Eventually, exhaustion crept in, wrapping around my limbs like a heavy shroud. I walked back inside, my steps unsteady but deliberate, and climbed onto the ice bed. The chill pressed against my skin, grounding me.

I closed my eyes, willing sleep to take me, but my mind betrayed me. Tor. His gaze burned through my memories, raw and filled with need. I could almost feel his body next to mine, his warmth against my cold skin. The weight of him, the way he fit against me, the way I fed from him. A shudder rolled through me, desire curling deep in my bones. It was hours before sleep finally claimed me, and when it did, I surrendered to the peace it brought.

By the time I woke, the sky outside was already painted in the dusky hues of early evening. I stretched, feeling a lingering sense of satisfaction humming through my body. Even after a full day’s rest, I was still sated. Kayne, my beast, whined in pleasure, his satisfaction mirroring my own.

Greedy beast. I chuckled, shaking my head as I swung my legs off the bed.

After a long, steaming shower, I stepped outside just as dusk settled over Paradise Coven City. Without hesitation, I headed straight for Ma’s house.

The minute I stepped into Kayne’s land, a wave of unease settled over me. Something was off. Very off. I exhaled slowly, pushing my power outward, letting it stretch across the land like unseen tendrils. The moment my energy touched them, I stiffened. Vampires.

Kayne, my beast, hissed in anger, his presence flaring in my mind like a scorching ember. They surround the land. His voice was guttural, filled with primal rage. And they’re not just watching. They’re in attack mode.

I clenched my jaw, my fists tightening at my sides. Ready to kill.

Dark energy pulsed through my veins, coiling like a beast ready to strike. Let them try, I thought, my lips curling into a slow, dangerous smile as I prepared to surge forward, with the plan to take them down and make them know the real powers of the Kayne family.
