Chapter 61: TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE NEWS

{"No risk, no reward. "}

FREY’S POV

The scent of Cassius and his goons hit my nostrils the moment I stepped onto Kayne’s lands. A growl rumbled in my chest as I followed the stench, my irritation growing with each step. What the hell were those bastards doing in my mother’s home? My fists clenched at the thought. The scent trail led straight to the main mansion, and that only pissed me off further.

Before I could reach for the door handle, it was yanked open from the inside. Elder Dante stood there, a smirk playing on his lips and a glint of amusement in his eyes.

"You used me as a distraction without caring if I was in danger," he said, his voice carrying a mix of reprimand and amusement.

A chuckle escaped me. I clapped a hand on his shoulder as I stepped inside. "I knew you’d handle it just fine. Besides, I had no choice. I had to keep them off my trail."

He shook his head with a knowing grin and shut the door behind me. Together, we moved deeper into the house, where Aurora and Nessa were seated near the balcony doors, deep in conversation. Ma was in the far corner, watering her flowers. The moment I stepped into the room, all three turned towards me.

Ma set her spray can down on a stool and hurried over, wrapping me in a warm embrace. She patted my back, her voice filled with relief. "I’m so glad you’re back safe and sound."

I squeezed her a little before pulling back, flashing a teasing smirk. "Your son-in-law, the Alpha of the Bay Shifter Pack, sends his greetings."

Ma burst into laughter, shaking her head. We each took a step back as Aurora, Nessa, and Elder Dante joined us in the living room. We settled on the couch, Ma and Elder Dante flanking me while Aurora and Nessa took the opposite side.

It took a full hour to recount what had happened on Hanka Island, though I deliberately left out details of our intimate moments, as well as Gerod the dragon and the secret magic hidden within the island. Some things were better left unsaid.

"So, you’re telling me that Lord Marcel plans to invade the Paradise Coven?" Nessa asked, her voice laced with disbelief. "And he’s using bloodstone bugs to control an army so that when our people attack, they’ll be completely defenseless?"

I nodded grimly. "Yes."

Elder Dante leaned forward then, his expression darkening as he began detailing his infiltration mission at Bloodstone Mountain. The more he spoke, the tighter my fists curled. My jaw nearly hit the floor when he described the nest—the grotesque, pulsating hive where the bloodstone bugs were being cultivated. And worse, the sinister voice behind it all. The gold used to hasten their hatching was just the cherry on top of this damn nightmare.

I shot to my feet, fury coursing through my veins. "Have they gone completely insane?!" I snarled, pacing the room. "Do they even understand the kind of destruction they’re inviting? This isn’t just war—it’s slaughter!"

Elder Dante exhaled sharply, nodding. "That’s exactly what they want, Freyr. This isn’t just about conquest. It’s about absolute domination. If we don’t stop this soon, there won’t be anything left of our people to fight back."

I raked a hand through my hair, my mind racing. What about our people? I asked, my voice laced with frustration.

Elder Dante’s expression darkened. "They have turned our people into puppets in the name of greed. Lord Marcel has completely lost it. I thought he was a fool, but now I see—he is aad."

Dante shook his head before continuing. "If it weren’t for the Bloodstone Mountain draining my invisibility powers, I would have stayed behind to see what he’s doing in his chambers. The entire mountain reeks of rotten blood—it’s nothing like before when Pa was Lord of the Coven."

A heavy silence hung between us. We had turned a blind eye for too long, allowing them to cause unimaginable damage. And now? Our vampire clan was in grave danger.

I turned to Dante, a sickening realization forming in my mind. "What kind of vampires is he turning into puppets?"

"The young ones," Dante said grimly. "The recruits in the army—eager, desperate, and easy to manipulate. But that’s not the worst of it. The weak ones—those whose minds failed to merge with the Bloodstone bug—were slaughtered instantly."

I cursed under my breath, my fists clenching. "How many of our people have been butchered?"

No one answered. The weight of it settled deep in my bones.

Then, another thought struck me, sending my mind spiraling into chaos. I turned sharply to Dante. "Where the hell did the gold come from if not the Bay Shifter Pack?"

His silence was enough to confirm my suspicions.

Gold had been shipped to Paradise Coven right under Tor’s nose. That’s how the Bay Shifter Pack had negotiated to take him down because he was the Alpha.

"Did they know?" Ma suddenly asked, her voice steady but edged with concern. "Did they know that Tor was destined to awaken as the Lycan? Did they plan for this?"

A chill ran down my spine. If that was true, then they hadn’t anticipated his awakening to happen so soon. They had wanted to weaken the army before that moment, to cripple the Bay Shifter Pack and seize control before Tor could rise.

"That could be it," Dante murmured, nodding grimly.

I exhaled sharply; my decision was already made. "I’m going undercover in the Bay Shifter Pack."

Hours had passed when Elder Dante and I finally left for Paradise Coven City. As we stood at the doorstep of my home, I turned to him, my chest tight with unspoken words.

"There’s something else I need to tell you," I admitted.

Elder Dante’s sharp eyes studied me for a moment before he gave a knowing nod. "Then we shouldn’t talk here. Come with me."

Without another word, he led me away from the house, and after twenty minutes of walking in silence, we arrived at his home by the ocean. The air was thick with salt, and the sound of crashing waves filled the night. We stepped onto a private beach hidden from the naked eye, the sand cool beneath our feet.

I smirked. "So, this is where you come to relax, old man?"

Elder Dante let out a rare, booming laugh. "You caught me," he said, shaking his head. "Now, what’s on your mind?"

I exhaled deeply, feeling the weight of my next words. "It’s about Gerod."

The moment I said the name, Elder Dante staggered back, his eyes widening in shock.

"Gerod... the dragon?" he breathed.

I nodded.

He ran a hand over his beard, his expression unreadable. "Pa once told me that Hanka Island held a secret. They spoke of ancient dragons guarding something powerful. At the time, I thought he was just rambling, he’d had more than a few drinks that night. But if what you’re saying is true, then..." His voice trailed off as he processed the revelation.

"It is true," I confirmed. "Gerod told Tor and me about the evil inside Bloodstone Mountain."

Elder Dante cursed under his breath. His fingers twitched slightly, his thoughts racing. "The voice inside the mountain... I swear I recognize it. But I can’t quite place who it is."

Frustration tightened in my chest. "We don’t have time to figure it out now," I muttered. "And with Ma about to cause chaos in the coven council, things will only get worse. She’ll have Qarida backing her up, which is a relief, but I won’t be here to watch over them."

I turned to face him fully, my jaw tight. "They’re my only family, Dante. And while I’m away in the Bay Shifter Pack, I need to know they’re safe."

Elder Dante held my gaze, his own steady and unwavering. "We’ve come to an understanding, your mother and I. As long as I draw breath, no one will dare lay a hand on the Kayne’s."

I nodded, a silent agreement passing between us. For now, that would have to be enough.

"When are you going back to the mountain? And what exactly are you looking for?" I asked, my voice steady despite the unease creeping into my gut.

Elder Dante’s gaze flickered toward the horizon, the moonlight casting sharp shadows across his face. "I need to see for myself what Lord Marcel is doing," he said. "I have a feeling he’s harnessing dark powers, and the only way to confirm it is to go deep into Bloodstone Mountain."

I clenched my jaw. "That’s madness, Dante. You know how dangerous that place is."

He turned to face me fully, his expression unreadable. "No one else can do it, Freyr. This mission is mine alone."

I exhaled sharply, frustration bubbling inside me. "I don’t like this," I admitted.

Dante’s lips curled into a faint smirk. "I didn’t expect you to."

I shook my head. "That mountain is filled with death and corruption. If Marcel is as far gone as we think, he won’t take kindly to someone sniffing around his business."

"I know the risks," Dante said, his voice calm but firm. "But I also know my way around Bloodstone Mountain. I’ve been there before. I can handle myself."

I hated this. Every instinct screamed at me that this was a bad idea, but Dante had already made up his mind.

"Just promise me you’ll be careful," I muttered.

"I always am," he said with a knowing glint in his eye. And yet, as I watched him, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this mission would change everything.
