Chapter 262: THE PERFECT FIT

{"The Lycan Alpha chose not a wolf, but a vampire with eyes like spilled wine and a soul centuries old. And the world tilted on its axis."}

The sun had started to dip low over the Bay Shifter mountains, casting long shadows through the treetops. The crowd was thinning, laughter echoing faintly from the garden where the pack still mingled and shared food. I needed air. A moment to myself.

I stepped away from the main tables, rounding the side of the garden toward a grove of tall cypress trees, thinking I would be alone. Instead, I found General Mortas leaned back against a tree trunk, arms folded, eyes fixed on the horizon like it might challenge him to a duel. And beside him, General Tiger sat on a stone bench, slowly slicing an apple with a curved dagger. His eyes tracked me even before I spoke.

"Didn’t mean to intrude," I said, pausing.

Tiger gave a small, amused grunt. "You did not. Thought you might show up."

Mortas tilted his head slightly. "You are quiet. Most newcomers... try harder."

I stepped into the groove, letting the quiet settle around us. "I learned a long time ago that silence reveals more than shouting ever does."

Tiger smiled faintly, nodding. "Good answer."

Mortas finally turned to me, eyes heavy with the weight of command and years of war. "Tors is different. Always was. Even when he was just a reckless boy. But now... he carries the pack on his back."

"I know," I said. "That’s why I’ll carry him when he needs it."

The silence that followed was uncomfortable. It was like a held breath, like the forest itself was listening. Mortas grunted once. "Strong words. But strength does not just come from bite and bone. Can you fight, vampire? Even against your Vampire Coven?

"For him? For this pack? Without hesitation." Tiger responded and then added, "Then you are already one of us. Mortas just likes to growl before he warms up."

Mortas rolled his eyes, but I caught the flicker of a grin. "Old habits."

I bit into the apple slice and nodded. "I did not expect this. Acceptance. From either of you."

Tiger leaned forward, elbows on knees. "You are not what we expected either. But you came through Blood Stone. You made it back with Tor. That means more than bloodlines ever will."

Mortas grunted in agreement. "Still watching you, though."

"I’d be disappointed if you weren’t," I replied with a smirk.

He chuckled low in his throat. "You have fire, boy. That will keep Tor on his toes."

We stood there for a while longer, not as strangers, not even as soldiers, but as men who knew the weight of leadership, loyalty, and love.

And for the first time, I did not feel like I was living in the space between two worlds.

I wandered around the Bay shifter pack, getting familiar with everything until I sensed Tor. I turned my head at the sound of firm, familiar footsteps. He did not say a word as he reached me. Just slid his hand into mine, lacing our fingers together like he had done it a thousand times. His skin was warm, calloused, and grounding. I turned toward him slightly, our arms pressed close.

"You disappeared," he murmured low, his voice for me alone.

"Needed a moment. Ran into Mortas and Tiger."

Tor glanced at the two generals, who stood just a few feet away, still watching, assessing.

"We were just talking," I added.

"About?" he asked, though the curl of a smile tugged at his mouth.

Before I could respond, footsteps rustled again, more of them. Commander Elle, Enforcer Troy, and General Tiger’s second-in-command arrived, their body language casual, but their eyes sharp.

"What’s this?" Tor asked, a low hum of curiosity in his voice.

Elle folded her arms. "Not ambushing you, Alpha. Just figured now is a good time to ask a question that has been circling through the command like wildfire."

Troy nodded. "What is the stance of Paradise Bay Coven in all this? We know Freyr’s yours. But what about the coven itself? Should we expect alliances? Or... interference?"

I blinked, the weight of their attention sudden and real. My spine straightened, my voice finding itself. "Paradise Bay Coven does not interfere. But it also does not abandon its own. My mother, Sierra Kayne, still holds a strong voice in the council. And Aurora Jade, the Coven Lord, blessed my union with Tor. She considers the peace between us vital."

Tor squeezed my hand gently. I stepped forward. "We did not leave in rebellion. We left in hope. We came to build bridges. Not walls. If ever there’s danger again, from within or beyond our borders, Paradise Bay will remember who helped save Blood Stone Mountain."

Mortas raised a brow. "So, you’re not just here to mate and vanish."

"No," I said calmly. "I am here to stay. And if that means balancing my roots with my new home, I will. But know this, I will not bring harm to Bay Shifter lands. I will defend them. As if they were my own."

There was a quiet. One of those charged silences where decisions are made in the bones before the mouth confirms them. Then Mortas gave a slight, approving nod.

Tiger scratched his beard. "Sounds like the boy speaks like a leader."

Tor chuckled and pulled me closer. "That’s because he is one."

Commander Elle tilted her head. "Then let us see if the peace holds. We will be watching, but for what it is worth, I hope it does."

Troy gave a short, respectful bow. "As do I."

And like that, the moment passed. But something shifted between us all. An understanding. A quiet pact. We were not just surviving; we were shaping what came next.

Tor leaned down to my ear. "You handled that like a true Alpha’s mate."

I smiled. "You’re lucky I’m not taking over."

He laughed. "You already have, Freyr. You already have."

It was late in the evening, the moon was climbing higher, and the stars were beginning to cut through the dark like silver blades. We did not speak much as we walked back to Tor’s home, just the rhythm of our boots, the rustling of leaves, and the low hum of night creatures filling the silence. He unlocked the door, held it open for me, and followed me in. The moment it clicked shut behind us, it was like the whole realm finally exhaled.

I leaned back against the wall, breathing in the scent of cedar and smoke that clung to him and the home he built. Tor looked at me for a long second, then crossed the space and rested his forehead against mine.

"I keep thinking," he murmured, voice low and raw, "about everything that had to go wrong just for us to find each other."

I closed my eyes, savouring the warmth of him, the steady pressure of his hands on my hips. "And everything we’ve survived to stay here."

Blood Stone Mountain. The betrayal. The battles. The questions about loyalty, love, and legacy. I had carried all of it in my chest like a second heart.

"Was there ever a moment," he whispered, "you thought you’d walk away?"

I opened my eyes. "Only one. When I thought I would lose you."

Tor’s expression shifted, that familiar flicker of pain and protectiveness sparking behind his eyes. "You never will. Not while I am breathing."

"You say that," I said gently, "but you are Alpha. I am... still learning where I fit in all of this."

He cupped my face, his thumbs brushing under my eyes. "You fit here. With me. At my side. You do not have to prove anything to anyone."

"But I want to," I said. "For you. For us. For this pack that is looking at me like I might be a threat or a miracle."

Tor leaned in and kissed me slowly, anchoring. "Then we will show them together. What it means to love across lines. To fight for something better."

I let myself breathe against his lips. The world outside could keep spinning, and tomorrow could bring doubt, questions, even storms. But tonight, we survived.

I pressed my forehead to his again, whispering, "Do you regret it? Choosing me?"

Tor growled low and kissed me again, deeper this time, with the kind of promise that silenced doubt. "Never. Choosing you was the only right thing I have ever done in a life of blood and duty."

Time moved; the world was asleep outside. But here, curled up in Tor’s bed, tangled in his scent and skin, I felt more awake than ever.

Tor was lying behind me, one arm draped heavily across my waist, fingers splayed like he was still half-afraid I would disappear. I could feel the slow, steady thud of his heart against my back, grounding me in ways I had not known I needed.

I shifted slightly, enough to catch his hand and press a kiss to his knuckles.

"Are you still awake?" I whispered.

"Mm," he murmured sleepily. "Barely. But I will stay up if you need me."

"I don’t need anything," I said, "except this."

He tightened his grip around me, pulling me closer until our bodies aligned completely. "You always sound surprised when you say that. Like it is new."

I smiled faintly into the dark. "It still is. I never thought I would have this. Not really."

Tor was quiet for a moment, then said, "They will love you. The pack. Once they see you the way I do."

"And how’s that?" I asked, turning slightly so I could look into his eyes.

He studied me like I was something carved from starlight and fire. "Your strength is wrapped in grace. You carry death and healing in the same breath. And God’s help anyone who underestimates the heart inside you."

My throat tightened. I did not have words for what bloomed in my chest, only the ache of it, the warmth that flooded every cold place I thought I had locked down for good.

I leaned in, kissed him slowly, deliberately. "What did I ever do to deserve you?"

He laughed softly, brushing my hair back. "You were born. And the moment I saw you, truly saw you, it was already done. My beast chose. My soul followed."

We lay there in silence, breaths syncing, skin against skin. In the morning, the world would demand things from us again. Power, Proof, and the presence, but tonight, this hour, this heartbeat belonged only to us. And I clung to that truth as I closed my eyes and let sleep take me with him still wrapped around me.
