Chapter 141: SNEAKED BACK INTO PARADISE COVEN
{"There’s no wrong time to make the right decision." }
The storm had swallowed the world whole. Rain lashed at my skin like tiny needles, and the blizzard howled through the trees, turning everything into a chaotic swirl of white and gray. Paradise Coven lay beyond the iron gates, its towering walls barely visible through the downpour. But what caught my attention wasn’t the storm; it was the guards. Twice as many as before, their armor slick with rain, hands gripping spears and swords, eyes scanning the darkness like hungry wolves. They weren’t just keeping people out. They were hunting.
Tor exhaled sharply beside me, his breath vanishing in the cold air. "This isn’t normal."
Rou, hood drawn tight over her face, studied the guards with a frown. "They’re looking for someone."
I nodded, feeling a prickle of unease crawl up my spine. "I bet that they are looking for Rou."
A clap of thunder split the sky, illuminating the guards for a fleeting second. Their posture was rigid, tense. I could see their hands hovering near their weapons, their eyes shadowed with something close to desperation.
Tor cursed under his breath. "We need a diversion."
Rou glanced at me, waiting. I knew what she was thinkin:, turn back or go forward. Either way, we were already too deep in this mess to escape untouched. I clenched my fists, forcing my voice to steady. "Sohen, can you divert them away from us so that we can get to Kayne lands. We need a distraction," I murmured. "Something loud. Something messy."
Sohen grinned, rolling his shoulders. "I like the sound of that. How big are we talking?"
"Big enough to pull every guard off this road," I said. "Give us a clear path to the eastern pass."
Tor huffed, his breath clouding in the cold air. "Just don’t get yourself killed."
Rou adjusted the strap of her satchel. "And make it convincing. If they suspect a trick, we’re done."
Sohen smirked, already reaching into his pack. "Do you think I can’t do it?"
"Yes," we all said at once.
He chuckled, then pulled out a handful of small vials, swirling with a sickly green liquid. "A little smoke, a little fire. I’ll lead them west, give you at least ten minutes. Just don’t waste it." Sohen gave a mock salute before slipping into the shadows. A moment later, a loud explosion shattered the night, followed by the frantic shouts of guards, and smoke billowed over the treetops, thick and unnatural.
Tor grinned. "I think that’s our cue."
With the storm at our backs and chaos ahead, we sprinted for Kayne Land, vanishing into the night before the guards even knew we were there. The moment our boots crossed into Kayne lands, I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. The Kayne homes came into view, their sturdy wooden frames standing against the wind like ancient sentinels. Light flickered from the windows, warm and inviting. As soon as we stepped into the courtyard, the front door swung open.
Ma was the first to move, rushing forward. "Finally!" She breathed, eyes scanning us as if expecting injuries. "You’re all alright?"
Dante, standing behind her, let out a relieved chuckle. "I was starting to think we’d have to come looking for you in Hanka Island."
Qadira crossed her arms, but I caught the slight tremor in her exhale. "You took your sweet time."
Rou spoke up. "The Royal guard Sohen did his job, offered us a distraction, and the guards never saw us."
Sierra’s shoulders sagged, the tension melting from her face. "Am glad. Come in we have much to discuss".
I stepped forward, my voice quieter than I expected. "It’s good to be home."
Dante clapped me on the back. "Then come inside. You look like you could use a drink."
We all settled in the living room after Rou, Tor, and I took a shower. Sierra, my mother, sat with her hands wrapped around a steaming cup, her sharp gaze fixed on me. Qadira leaned back in her chair, arms crossed, unreadab,le and the rest of us settled on the couch mulling over the happenings of the past days.
"I went to Hanka Island looking for Tor," I said, my voice steady despite the weight of what I was about to recount. "But the moment I arrived, the vampires came the next day." The memory flashed behind my eyes. "But Hanka Island created a diversion and chased them away. I sensed that someone had leaked the information that I had come to Hanka Island and the bloodstone bugs infected vampires come after me".
Silence stretched between us before Tor finally spoke. His voice was quieter than usual. "I had already left Hanka Island after hiding in there for a day and went back to Bay shifter lands and found it under attack. The bloodstone bug-infected vampire had come to the beach front of the Bay Shifter pack and attacked. Luckily, the Rogourau beast and my people were prepared. A day later, Rita found Althea, and together with Commander Flora, we left for Hanka Island."
Ma inhaled sharply, her eyes darkening with old pain, and Tor continued, his fingers lacing together. "Gerod sent me. He told me I had to bring her back. That time was running out." He let out a hollow laugh. "I thought I had more time, but the evil that had infected her had drained her and her power."
Qadira’s voice was even, but I could hear the tension beneath it. "You buried her?"
Tor nodded, his jaw tight. "Yes. We buried her in the Haven cave, but I will also go back to the Bay shifter pack and honor her memory. "
"Something is coming, Freyr. Something ancient. And it’s waking up." Her expression darkened. "I felt it." Ma glanced up, eyes sharp with something I rarely saw in her: fear. "When I was in the Paradise Coven prison, the magic there was different. Tainted. At first, I thought it was just the prison itself, but then... I started sensing something else."
Tor’s voice was low, cautious. "Something else?"
Rou nodded. "An energy. A presence. And it wasn’t just lingering, it was growing. It reached for me, testing, searching." He clenched his fists. "Whatever it was, it was ancient, and I even felt the power of Ragar mountain in me, and it was too chilling. It sensed I was in the prison, and Lord Marcel rushed over to get me, but I managed to escape. "
Qadira was the first to speak. "What the fuck does it want?"
Rou’s jaw tightened. "Power. Blood. Everything." He leaned back, running a hand his han.ds "The evil that’s threatening the world isn’t coming. It’s already here. And it’s using the ancient power inside that mountain to grow stronger, and it what it craves if the Lycan’s power and the Kayne blood ston.e"
Qadira finally turned from the wind, her voice unreadable. "Then we stop it."
Rou let out a short laugh, but there was no humor in it. "We have no choice if we want the realm to remain safe."
I met his gaze, my pulse steady despite the weight of her words. "No." My voice was firm. "We don’t just survive it." I looked at each of them, knowing we were already standing at the edge of something far bigger than ourselves. "We have to end, and the only way is to get to Stone Mountain and find what kind beast or power we are dealing with."
Ma’s sharp gaze locked onto Tor and Rou as if she were seeing something the rest of us couldn’t. Her voice was steady but edged with something rare: fear. "You cannot go into Blood Stone Mountain."
Tor frowned. "What?"
Rou scoffed, crossing her arms. "And why not?"
Sierra exhaled slowly, choosing her words with care. "Because it will sense you. Both of you."
A thick silence fell over the room. I felt my pulse quicken, but I forced myself to stay still, to listen.
Tor shook his head. "That doesn’t make any sense. Why us?"
Sierra’s eyes darkened. "Because you’ve already been touched by it."
I stiffened. "What do you mean?"
She turned to me, her expression unreadable. "You said it yourself, Freyr. Rou sensed its power while she was in the Paradise Coven prison. And Tor..." She hesitated, then looked him straight in the eye. "Your Lycan powers are something it craves." Tor flinched. Just slightly, but I saw it. Sierra continued, "You need to go back to the Bay Shifter pack while Dante and Freyr go into the stone mountain and investigate. They are our best bet."
Tor stood up and walked out ofthe living room through the back door, and then Rou pointed out that I should follow him, and I rushed after him and found him in the backyard.
"This is madness." He spun on his heel, throwing a hand toward me. "You’re going to walk into that Blood Stone mountain without me?"
I sighed, rubbing a hand over my face. "Tor—"
"No." He cut me off, shaking his head. "I hate this. I hate the idea of being separated from you. After everything. Do you know how I felt when I got to Hanka Island and found you lying on the Haven cave?" His voice cracked, just slightly, and he cursed under his breath, turning away.
"Tor," I said quietly as I moved closer to him. "I don’t want this either."
His shoulders tensed. "Then don’t do it."
I sighed. "You know I have to."
Tor let out a bitter laugh, running a hand through his hair. "I hate this."
"I know." I nodded in response.
He clenched his jaw, looking at me like he was trying to memorize every detail. "Just promise me."
"Promise you what?" I whispered.
His voice was quieter now, raw. "That you’ll come back unscathed. "
I met his gaze, steady. "I’ll come back unscathed. I promise"
