Chapter 142: BY THE WATER CAVES OF BLOOD STONE MOUNTAIN
{"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek"}
Tor stood before me, close enough that I could feel his warmth, close enough that I could see the way the moonlight softened the sharp angles of his face. He looked at me like he was trying to memorize me, as if he could somehow hold onto this moment, stretch it into forever. But forever wasn’t ours to have. Not when the mountain called my name.
His hands found my waist first, hesitant, like he was afraid I’d disappear the moment he touched me. But I didn’t move away. I couldn’t. Instead, I reached for him, gripping his jacket as if that would be enough to keep me here. To keep us here.
"I don’t want to let you go," he whispered, his voice raw, breaking at the edges.
I swallowed hard, my throat tight. "Then don’t."
But we both knew it wasn’t that simple.
Tor exhaled shakily, his fingers pressing into my back, holding me tighter, pulling me closer, as if he could fuse me into him and never have to let go. His breath ghosted against my cheek, warm despite the cold night air. "Freyr." My name left his lips like a prayer, a plea.
And then he kissed me, and it was slow at first, tender—like he was trying to hold onto something fragile. But then something in him broke, and the kiss deepened, all the sadness, the desperation, the love we had never spoken aloud pouring into it. My fingers curled into his hair, pulling him impossibly closer, not caring that the world was slipping out of our grasp, not caring that the night would soon end, taking this moment with it. Because this was all we had, and when we finally pulled apart, his forehead rested against mine, our breaths mingling in the cold air. His hands trembled slightly as they cupped my face, his eyes searching mine, as if he could find some promise in them, some guarantee that I would come back.
"Promise me," he murmured, voice barely above a whisper. "I hope you will be safe. I love you so much, Frery Kayne.
I closed my eyes for a brief second, wishing I could be certain, wishing I could carve those words into fate itself. But all I had was this moment, and so I gave him the only answer I could.
"I plan to spend the rest of my life with you." His breath hitched, but he didn’t pull away. He didn’t loosen his hold. And neither did I.
Tor’s arms tightened around me, his grip almost desperate, as if he thought I might slip away if he let go. His breath was ragged against my neck, his body tense with something I couldn’t quite place, but I could feel it pressing against my chest, crawling into my skin through our bond. I barely had time to process it before he pushed my head aside, exposing the mark on my neck, the mark that bound us, the mating mark, and then, without warning, he bit down.
A sharp gasp tore from my lips as the sensation crashed over me like a tidal wave. Heat bloomed through my body, raw and consuming, leaving me trembling in his hold. My fingers dug into his back, gripping onto him like he was the only thing keeping me upright. The bond between us flared, our connection opening wider, and then I heard him, his voice, not in the air, but in our mind link.
Freyr... His voice was thick with emotion, edged with something unspoken.
I tried to steady my breath, tried to push past the haze of his claim settling deep in my bones. Tor—What’s wrong?
His hold on me tightened. I have a bad feeling. Something isn’t right.
The weight of his words settled deep in my chest. Tor wasn’t the kind of person to admit fear, and if he was feeling something through the bond—if his instincts, or worse, his beast, Gale, was unsettled—then I knew better than to ignore it. He unlatched his teeth from the mating mark.
Talk to me, I urged, my fingers brushing against his jaw as I tilted my head to meet his eyes.
His pupils were blown wide, his expression torn between something wild and something deeply, painfully human. Gale’s restless. He’s never like this unless— Tor hesitated, exhaling shakily. I needed to do something. To reassure him. To remind myself that you’re still here.
I swallowed hard, feeling my body still trembling in the aftermath of his bite. I’m here, Tor.
His hands framed my face now, his thumb brushing against my cheek, but I could feel the tension coiled beneath his skin, the storm brewing inside him.
"Take it, "Tor whispered, and his voice was like a command. I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. Did I hear him right? Tor’s grip on my shoulders was firm, his eyes dark, unwavering. "Freyr, take it. Take what you need."
My body tensed at his words. Kayne, my beast, stirred violently, clawing at my control, urging me forward. My fangs ached, lengthening against my will, and my throat burned with a hunger I had been trying to suppress.
"I just fed from you hours ago in Hanka Island, "I muttered.
Tor’s expression softened, but the determination never left his gaze. He tilted his head, baring his throat to me, his pulse thrumming just beneath the skin. "I want to feel you feeding from me."
A shudder ripped through me, and then I snapped. My teeth sank into his skin, piercing the mark, and a groan rumbled from his chest, low and deep, as his blood spilled onto my tongue, warm and electric. The taste sent fire through my veins, and I lathed my tongue over the wound, drinking deeply, and Tor trembled against me. His fingers curled into the fabric of my shirt; his breath was ragged. He moaned again, and the sound sent a shiver down my spine, sharp and unexpected.
His blood was fire and devotion and something far too addictive. His body pressed against mine, heat radiating between us, and every time I swallowed, he let out another soft, breathy sound that only made my hunger spike.
Freyr... His voice ghosted through our bond, thick and dazed, and when I was sated, my tongue swept over the punctures, sealing them. When I finally pulled back, my breath was uneven, my lips stained red. Tor’s chest rose and fell rapidly, his pupils blown wide. For a long moment, we just stared at each other, the tension between us something alive, something neither of us knew how to name.
The next morning came too soon, and the sun was barely rising, its pale light struggling to break through the dense mist curling around our feet.
Tor stood in front of me, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression unreadable. Sohen, who had returned just hours before, stood beside him, his sharp gaze sweeping the land ahead like he was already preparing for whatever threat might come next. Behind me, Dante shifted impatiently, silent but ready, accompanied by Rou. I reached for him before I could stop myself, my fingers brushing against his. He didn’t pull away. Instead, he gripped my hand tightly, as if holding on for one more second would change everything.
"I hate this," he muttered, his voice raw again.
"Me too," I admitted with a nod.
Rou cleared his throat behind us. "It’s time."
Tor inhaled sharply, then pulled me into a fierce, almost bruising embrace. His fingers pressed into my back, his breath warm against my temple. And then he slowly pulled back, his eyes stormy, unreadable. Then, without another word, he turned on his heel and strode away, back toward Kayne lands, where I could no longer follow accompanied by Rou and Sohen hot on their heels, and I watched him until he disappeared into the mist.
A hand landed on my shoulder. Dante.
"Let’s go," he said, his voice unusually quiet.
I nodded, steeling myself. Then, without looking back, I turned toward the path ahead, toward the looming peaks of Blood Stone Mountain, where shadows whispered and ancient power pulsed in the earth. The wind howled as we stood at the base of Blood Stone Mountain, its jagged peaks towering over us like the ribs of some ancient beast. The sky above churned with heavy clouds, an eerie red tint bleeding into the horizon as if the mountain itself was poisoning the heavens.
Dante exhaled beside me, his breath visible in the cold air. "We are back, again sneaking in to investigate. "
"Fuck, we have to get it right this time," I said quietly.
We had kept to the shadows as we traveled, just as Sohen had advised, and finally got to the water entrance where the water crashed the waves violently. "Sohen said there’s an entrance through the caves. If we follow the currents right, it’ll lead us inside."
Dante let out a humorless chuckle. "Right. Just follow the currents. Through a maze of underwater caves, and you do know how much I hate the ocean water".
I shot him a look. "Would you rather take our chances with the main entrance?"
He scoffed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Not a damn chance."
Together, we moved toward the sea, toward the darkness waiting beneath the mountain’s belly.
