Chapter 127: BLOOD THIRST
Chapter 127: BLOOD THIRST
I listened as Gerod recounted a tale of deception and the looming vampire invasion when Tor Gale just set foot on Hanka Island. With a light chuckle, he narrated how vampires thought they could track Tor, only to be outwitted. For two days, Tor remained hidden, unseen, untouched by their relentless pursuit, and Hanka Islands’ rage at their action caused an avalanche and at last, they gave up and left.
As I stepped forward, the truth settled within me as I finally understood how Tor was able to send me messages through Kayne. But before I could voice my thoughts, Gerod’s voice cut through the silence, firm yet knowing.
"The magic of the Haven Cave," he says, "enabled Kayne’s and Gale’s mind link to reach out to each other."
I nodded in understanding but could not ignore the unease clawing at my chest. "Thank you, Gerod," I replied but my voice laced with worry. "But what about Tor? Is he okay?"
Gerod’s nostrils flare a flicker of heat in his golden eyes. His voice is sharp, edged with the weight of truths I am not ready to hear. "Your mate has every right to be angry," he stated "Vampires threatened to attack the Bay Shifter Pack, but the pack was prepared. And of course, when Tor found out..." I swallow hard, already knowing what he will say next. "It threw Gale into a fit of rage."
The weight of understanding settled deep within me as I finally grasped the emotions that surged through my mate. Tor’s frustration, his fear, his rage, it all pulseted through the bond, a storm barely contained. I closed my eyes for a moment, allowing the connection to take hold, letting the energy of our bond weave through me. His presence is distant yet steady, like a heartbeat just beyond reach.
Then, Gerod’s voice cuts through my thoughts, smooth and unwavering. "Tor will be coming to Hanka Island soon," he reported, his golden eyes watching me closely. "You need to wait for him."
I exhaled slowly, nodding "I understand," and murmured in response.
Gerod gave a satisfied nod before turning away, his massive form shifting effortlessly as he stepped back into the pond. The water rippled around him, glowing faintly with the ancient magic of this place. I took one last glance at the still surface before turning on my heel and walking away. The wait would be agonizing, but Tor was coming and that was all that I cared about.
As I stepped out of the Haven Cave, the cool night air brushed against my skin, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant salt from the sea. The weight of my conversation with Gerod still lingered in my mind, but I pushed it aside noting that the night was quiet—too quiet.
From the shadows of the trees, Soren emerged, his sharp gaze locking onto me the moment he spotted my figure. His steps were quick and eager, and there was a flicker of anticipation in his eyes.
"You’re back," he says, his voice edged with curiosity. "What happened in there?"
I did not answer immediately. My thoughts were still tangled, and the last thing I wanted was to voice the uncertainty that was clawing at me. Instead, I exhaled, keeping my tone even. "We’re staying here for the night."
Soren frowned, clearly unsatisfied with my lack of explanation. "Why?"
"Tomorrow, some members of the Bay Shifter Pack will arrive," I reply, my voice firm. "We need to wait and meet them."
For a moment, he just stared at me, as if searching for something in my expression. But I offered nothing more as the truth would come when it needed to.
Finally, with a quiet sigh, Soren nodded. "Alright," he muttered, glancing back toward the thick forest. "Then we wait."
Soren made a campfire as the fire flickered low, casting long shadows against the thick trunks of the forest. The night was silent, save for the distant rustling of leaves and the occasional crackle of burning wood. After a while, I listened to Soren who shifted in his sleep, his breathing steady, oblivious to the storm churning inside me. I sat by the fire for a while, staring at the flames, but my thoughts were elsewhere. My body pulled me toward a place I had not stepped foot in since the last time Tor and I were here.
I rose to my feet, moving silently through the dense forest. The night air was sharp, biting at my skin, but I barely felt it. My steps are automatic, following a path I knew all too well. The deeper I went, the more the world seemed to fade, until all that was left was the ache in my chest and the memories pressing against my mind.
Then, I saw it. The hidden cave. Our sanctuary. I stepped inside, and the scent of him washed over me like a wave, faint but still there. My chest tightened as I moved toward the blankets, neatly tucked into the hidden corner, untouched by time.
A sharp breath escaped me, and I closed my eyes, frustration curling deep inside. The cold wind slipped through the entrance, harsher than I remember, seeping into the walls, into my bones and I realized that it wasn’t this cold the last time we were together. Back then, there was warmth, his warmth. And then, the memories came.
Tor’s lips against mine, demanding and full of fire. His arms around me, were strong, unyielding. The way his breath hitched when he whispered my name. The deep, possessive growl that always sent heat rushing through me. I gripped the edge of the stone wall, my fingers digging into the rough surface as the loneliness crashed into me. The weight of his absence is unbearable, a hollow space in my chest that nothing else could fill. I exhale shakily, forcing my eyes open. The cave is just a cave now, cold, empty, silent. I turned away before I lost myself completely and moved outside the cave and went back to the little camp that Soren had set up and found him in the same spot.
I let out a slow breath as I settled against the rough bark of a tree trunk, my body aching from exhaustion. The fire has burned low, its embers casting a dim glow over the camp. Soren is curled up a few feet away, his breathing steady, lost in sleep. I should stay on watch, but my body betrays me, pulling me under the weight of fatigue.
Just a moment. Just enough to rest. The forest hummed around me, crickets chirping, and leaves whispering in the night breeze. It’s enough to lull me into darkness. I don’t know how long I slept before it happened. My eyes snapped open, my entire body going rigid. Something was wrong.
The night is too still. The air around me felt heavier, charged with something unseen. My heart pounded, though I hadn’t moved yet. My instincts screamed at me, louder than any sound in the forest.
I did not breathe or bling but just listened and then at first, it was nothing but a dull ache—like a whisper of discomfort curling in my gut. But then it surged, a sharp, relentless hunger that ripped through me, raw and insatiable. My throat tightened, a burning fire seared through my veins, and for the first time in my existence, I knew what true thirst was.
No, this was not normal. This had never happened before and I gasped but the air did nothing. It did not soothe me Instead, it fanned the fire inside me, making it worse. My body betrayed me, I could not move, couldn’t fight it, couldn’t even lift a trembling hand to my throat as it constricted like a noose. A hundred searing needles stabbed into every muscle, locking me in place. My fangs ached, pulsing with a need I didn’t understand.
"What is this?" I whispered, but no sound escaped from my mouth instead a roar exploded inside my mind. Kayne. My beast. The primal force that had always lurked beneath the surface, controlled, restrained. But now, he was fully and violently awake.
I squeeze my eyes shut, my fingers digging into the damp earth beneath me. The scents of the forest rushed in. wood, moss, the lingering trace of Soren somewhere nearby. But none of it matters. None of it made me calm as all I could think about was the hunger I felt and the way I could not hold back as my fangs extended and all I wanted was Tor’s blood.
A voice rose, Distant at first, muffled beneath the pounding roar in my head. But then it sharpened, cutting through the haze of hunger that held me prisoner.
"Freyr!" It was Soren as His voice wavered, edged with concern. He was close. Too close. I forced my eyes open, but the world blurred at the edges. My limbs trembled as I fought to move, to control the vicious tremors wracking my body. The thirst burned, scorching through my veins like wildfire.
"What’s wrong? Freyr, talk to me!"
I tried. I wanted to answer. But my throat felt raw, my breath coming in ragged gasps. The scent of him, warm and, alive, filled my senses, and something inside me snapped.
I couldn’t stay. Before another word left his lips, I found the strength to move. My body blurred into motion, vanishing from his sight in an instant. The wind howled against my skin as I ran, tearing through the dense trees, leaving nothing but a ghost of my presence behind. I didn’t stop until I reached the cave. The moment my feet hit the stone floor, the scent hit me, deep, familiar, intoxicating.
Tor.
It wrapped around me, thick and overwhelming, a scent that had once been my solace but now sent Kayne into a frenzy. A deafening roar tore through my mind, primal and desperate. "TOR, WE NEED HIM" I staggered, pressing a hand to the cold rock wall, my chest heaving as the hunger clawed its way to the surface.
I was losing control and darkness engulfed me.
