Chapter 128: THE SHIFT IN MY BEAST

Chapter 128: THE SHIFT IN MY BEAST

{"Our love is forbidden, but it burns brighter than any flame"}

I woke up with a gasp as my body jerked upright, muscles tight, breath ragged. The hunger was still there, coiled deep in my core, but it was duller now—a lingering burn rather than a raging inferno. For a moment, I didn’t move. My senses stretched outward, searching, assessing. Then, as my vision cleared, I realized where I was.

The cave.

My chest rose and fell in sharp, uneven breaths as I took in the familiar space. The stone walls, the faint scent of damp earth, the remnants of our last night here, Tor’s scent still clung to the air, wrapping around me like a ghost of the past.

"I blacked out...?" I murmured; my voice hoarse. The last thing I remembered was the hunger, the unbearable thirst—then nothing. Just darkness.

I ran a hand through my hair, my fingers trembling slightly. How had I gotten here? Had I run on instinct? Or had Kayne taken over? A cold shiver ran down my spine at the thought. Losing control wasn’t something I did. It wasn’t something I could afford to do. I pressed my palm against the stone floor, grounding myself, forcing steady breaths. The cave was silent, save for the distant howl of the wind outside. But something was wrong. I could feel it. Something inside me had changed.

Kayne, my beast, was in a frenzy, thrashing within me like a caged storm. I had never felt him this wild, this uncontrollable. My chest ached with the weight of his rage, and I wondered, what had triggered this unbearable hunger.

Before I could dwell on it further, Gerod’s voice pushed through the chaos in my mind, steady and commanding.

"Your beast’s power is unstable because the one who seeks the Kayne Stone is disturbing the balance of power in the realm. Get yourself to the Haven Cave."

It wasn’t a suggestion, it was a command; one I could not disobey. The pull was immediate, primal, an instinct that overrode everything else. Gritting my teeth, I forced myself up, my limbs heavy, my breath ragged. Step by step, I stumbled toward the cave entrance.

Outside, the night air hit me like a slap, cool and biting. Soren was pacing up and down, his expression taut with worry. The moment his eyes landed on me; his shoulders sagged in visible relief.

"Are you okay?" he blurted out, rushing over. His hands hovered at my sides, hesitant, as if unsure whether to steady me or shake me for scaring him.

I could only nod. Words felt impossible. The hunger still burned beneath my skin, but I pushed it down, focusing on the only thing that mattered, getting to the Haven Cave.

Soren, ever perceptive, caught on. Without another word, he slipped an arm undermine, supporting me as I pointed in the cave’s direction. Step by step, we moved, the weight of exhaustion pressing down on me, but I kept going.

As we neared, an eerie sight greeted us—thick clouds covered the cave’s entrance, swirling in a strange, unnatural way. Soren tensed beside me, his grip tightening on my arm. "What is this?" he muttered, glancing around, his eyes searching for a way in.

Before I could answer, the clouds shifted.

Like a curtain being drawn back, they parted, revealing the mouth of the Haven Cave. The sight of it sent a strange sense of calm through me, a pull stronger than anything I had ever felt. Without hesitation, we stepped forward and walked right in.

Gerod was nowhere in sight. The cave felt hollow in his absence, but I had no time to dwell on it. My body was barely holding together, my beast clawing beneath my skin, desperate for control. I turned to Soren, my voice hoarse but firm.

"Dump me in the pool."

He blinked, taken aback. "You sure?"

I gave a slow nod, exhaustion weighing on me. "Just do it."

Soren hesitated, his eyes flickering with unspoken questions. I could tell he wanted answers, why I was this week, why the pool, what the hell was going on but he held his tongue. Instead, he exhaled through his nose and nodded.

"Fine. I’ll be outside," he muttered. His gaze lingered on the water for a moment longer, something unreadable passing through his eyes before he finally turned away. The cave doors sealed shut behind him, trapping me in silence.

The moment I was alone, the water stirred.

A ripple spread across the surface, the energy shifting, and then Gerod emerged, his presence pressing against mine like a weight I hadn’t realized I was carrying.

I barely had the strength to stand, but I could feel Kayne, my beast, writhing inside me, unstable, restless, hungry. I clenched my fists, trying to keep him contained, but Gerod’s voice cut through the storm in my head.

"You feel it, don’t you?" His tone was steady, knowing.

I forced myself to meet his gaze. "What’s happening to me?"

Gerod’s expression darkened. "The Mira magic bond that Ma placed on your mind link with Tor... I can sense it. It’s still there, sealed, but weakening."

I stiffened. My breath came in short, shallow bursts as the realization hit me.

"I haven’t fed on Tor in a long time," I murmured, dread creeping into my voice.

Gerod nodded. "And because of that, your beast is unstable. Too much power has been locked within the bond, and without feeding, without reinforcing it... Kayne is losing control." I swallowed hard, my throat dries despite the damp air around me. It all made sense now—the hunger, the blackouts, the pull I had been fighting.

"I need Tor," I muttered, the words barely leaving my lips as the realization settled deep in my bones. The hunger, the instability—everything—was tied to him. My beast, Kayne, needed him. I needed him.

I turned to Gerod, my voice raw. "How soon will he be here?"

Gerod’s response was sharp, laced with disapproval. "Get out of the pool, now."

The command left no room for argument. I forced my body to move, dragging myself out of the water, my limbs heavy with exhaustion. The moment my skin hit the cool stone, something shifted. The unbearable tension that had gripped my muscles loosened, and for the first time in hours, Kayne settled.

I let out a slow, shuddering breath, my body sinking against the rocks. The cavern was quiet, save for the faint echo of dripping water, but Gerod’s voice cut through the stillness.

"Rest." His tone was firm, almost gentle.

I tried to fight it, to push against the pull of exhaustion, but my body had other plans. My eyelids grew heavy, and before I could protest, darkness swallowed me whole.

I had no idea how long I slept, but I felt weightless, drifting in a dream.

Then, Tor appeared. He was walking toward the caves of Hanka Island, his strides steady yet urgent. In his arms, he carried an old woman, her frail body cradled with careful precision. Flora was beside him, along with another woman I didn’t recognize. Their movements were quick and purposeful. They headed straight for Hanka Island with speed and I sensed the sense of hurry between them. The sight of Tor alone was enough to restore whatever balance I had lost. His presence soothed Kayne, the chaos within me settling like a tide drawn back into the sea.

In the vision I heard his voice as he commanded them that they needed to hurry as Althea’ body was dwindling and he had promised Gerod that he would make it on time. The words faded as I felt dizzy and felt fatigue take over.

Hours must have passed. A voice, deep, familiar, cut through the lingering haze of sleep.

"Frery."

My eyes snapped open, instinct taking over before thought. My fangs extended, hunger surging through me like a flood breaking past a dam. I moved without hesitation. Grabbing Tor’s neck, I sank my fangs into his skin. The taste of his blood hit me like fire, igniting something primal in my veins. It rushed through me, burning away the weakness, grounding me in ways nothing else could. I drank, deep and greedy, until my hunger was fully sated.

Then, a whisper. "Enough," Tor murmured, his voice steady despite what I had just done. "We are not alone."

The words cut through the haze of bloodlust, forcing clarity back into my mind and I managed to pull back, breathing hard, my lips still stained with his blood and my eyes raked his handsome face with love.

"You are finally here "I spoke and then leaned in to his neck, licked the bite marks to close the wounds. The satisfying hitched breath from Tor made me smile and when I raised my head up, his eyes glinted with a warning and I could only chuckle.

"We have urgent matters to do, I shall deal with you later "He scolded me as he pulled me up from the ground and then we stood facing everyone. My eyes darted to the old woman and I realized that it was Althea Gale, and there was a dark smoke forming in her ears and mouth and I attempted to move towards her.

"She is infected "Gerod rose up from the water, surprising both Flora and the woman next to her and more so Soren whose eyes widened in shock and his jaw dropped making me wonder how he had gotten into the cave.
