Chapter 126: A GUARD FOR KAYNE

{"The voice of a dragon echoes the courage within us all."}

The guard seemed to be thinking out loud, his gaze darting between us before he finally spoke. "It would be best if I blended in with the other guards first—to find out what they’re planning."

Qadira crossed her arms, skeptical. "And how do we know you won’t turn on us the moment you’re back with them?"

The guard didn’t even flinch. Instead, he met my gaze directly and said, "Because if I betray you, Frery Kayne will find me and finish me off."

I nodded once, accepting the truth in his words.

"There’s also something else," the guard continued. "There’s a hidden path to Hanka Island. That’s how we got in when we were tracking you."

My eyes narrowed. "Tracking me?"

The air in the room grew heavy.

"Yes," the guard confirmed. "Cassius gave the order. He wanted us to follow you and find out if you had any secrets hidden in Hanka Island." His lips curled slightly in disgust. "He was desperate to find something—anything he could use against you."

I clenched my jaw. "Why?"

"He wanted dirt on you," the guard admitted. "Something strong enough to break off your engagement to Aurora."

The sharp intake of breath from Aurora made me shift my gaze to her. She stood frozen, her expression unreadable, but I could see the tension in the way she gripped the edge of the couch. It was Nessa who finally spoke, her voice cold and unwavering. "Cassius is dead. There’s no need to keep up this farce of an engagement anymore."

Before I could respond, the guard hurriedly interjected, his voice urgent. "You don’t understand. I once overheard Lord Marcel talking. Aurora was never meant to be your mate—she was just bait."

A stunned silence filled the room. "What?" Aurora’s voice was barely a whisper.

The guard exhaled sharply. "Marcel only arranged the engagement so he could control you, Frery Kayne. And more importantly, he wanted an excuse to dispose of Aggrey, Aurora’s father, from the Coven Council."

I felt the weight of his words settles over me like a storm cloud. Marcel’s schemes ran deeper than I had realized. Aurora let out a sharp breath, her hands tightening into fists. "So, I was nothing more than a pawn," she muttered, voice thick with anger.

I met her gaze, my voice steady. "Not anymore."

Then, without hesitation, I turned to Qadira. "Go to the Coven Council and announce that I, Frery Kayne, am no longer interested in this engagement. Make it clear that I will decide for myself who will be my lifetime mate."

Qadira’s lips curled into a sharp grin, her eyes glinting with satisfaction. Without another word, she vanished in a blur of vampire speed, leaving only a faint gust of wind in her wake. I turned back to Aurora and Nessa. "Hold the fort until I return," I instructed. "If Rou is released, have him send word to me immediately."

They both nodded, understanding the weight of my words. There was no need for long goodbyes—only action. The guard and I moved swiftly, slipping out of the Kayne home through the back door. The cool night air brushed against my skin as we made our way into the dense shadows of the Kayne Forest. The trees loomed tall, their branches whispering secrets to the wind as we navigated the hidden paths.

I waited, unmoving, my body fused with the darkness as I kept my invisibility shield up. The guards had stopped near Soren, pacing in lazy circles as they spoke.

"Sheer madness," one of them muttered, shaking his head. "Lord Marcel has completely lost it."

The other scoffed. "And now he’s got Idris doubling patrols, barking orders like a rabid dog. All this just to keep Frery Kayne from leaving the lands?"

I narrowed my eyes. Marcel was truly desperate.

Soren, to his credit, remained completely neutral. "I get it," he said, his voice laced with exhaustion. "I’ve been on patrol for two days straight. Feels like we’re chasing shadows."

The two guards grumbled in agreement. Then, after exchanging a few more complaints, they finally parted ways, leaving Soren behind.

I exhaled slowly, waiting. One minute. Five. Ten. I stretched my senses outward, searching for any lingering presence. Nothing. Only when I was sure the coast was clear did I let my invisibility drop and step forward.

Soren turned slightly at the sound of my approach. His eyes met mine, calm and expectant as if he knew I’d been watching the entire time.

I studied him for a moment. "What’s your name?"

For the first time since I met him, a flicker of amusement crossed his face. "Took you long enough to ask," he said. Then, after a pause, he added, "Soren."

I nodded. "Soren," I repeated, rolling the name over my tongue. "You handled that well."

He smirked. "I’ve had practice." Then his expression grew serious. "Marcel won’t stop hunting you, Frery. You need to be ready for what’s ahead."

I clenched my jaw. "I always am."

Soren gave a sharp nod. "Then let’s move. I know another way out."

I didn’t hesitate. "Lead the way."

Hours later, we finally landed on Hanka Island. The moment my boots touched the ground, a familiar tremor rippled beneath us, the island responding to my presence as it always did. I smirked, unfazed, but beside me, Soren tensed. His eyes darted across the landscape, scanning every shadow, every shifting rock as if expecting an ambush.

"What the hell was that?" he asked, voice edged with wariness.

"Normal," I replied smoothly. "Hanka Island is alive in its way."

Soren didn’t look convinced. He turned toward me, still on high alert. "Listen, I should head back to Paradise Bay Coven before they realize I’m missing."

I folded my arms, studying him. "That would be wise."

But he shook his head before I could continue. "No. I should stay hidden here until you return. If I go back now, it’ll be obvious I was gone, and they’ll start asking questions. Letting them think I vanished for a bit is safer."

I frowned. The plan had been for him to cover his tracks, not to stick around and witness things he wasn’t meant to see. "Soren—"

"I won’t be a liability," he interrupted, his voice steady. "I’ll stay out of the way. I’ll keep my head down."

I exhaled sharply, still reluctant, but I could see his logic. If he left too soon, suspicions would rise. Finally, I nodded. "Fine. But you keep a low profile. And swear to me—no matter what you see on this island, you will never speak of it to anyone."

Soren met my gaze, his expression unreadable. Then, without hesitation, he lifted his hand and swore. "On my life, I will not betray what I see here."

I studied him a moment longer before turning toward the path ahead. "Then let’s go."

As we ventured deeper into Hanka Island, I noticed Soren growing wary, his sharp gaze scanning the surroundings. That was when the scent hit me—a thick, acrid stench of infected vampires lingering in the crisp air. Soren tensed beside me, his voice dropping to a whisper.

"The vampire army has been here," he murmured. "They came to hunt."

The scent was scattered everywhere, tangled in the wind like a sinister presence refusing to fade. Without another word, Soren surged forward in vampiric speed, and I followed close behind. He came to an abrupt halt by a massive tree, his fingers tracing the snow-dusted bark.

"They circled this place over and over," he noted, his voice grim. "And then they left, right after an avalanche came down from the mountain."

I took in the scene, my mind piecing together the fragments of what had transpired. From the patterns in the snow, the erratic scents, and the way the energy still trembled in the air, it was clear—they had been hunting for Tor. But Hanka Island had acted on its own, repelling them.

A small smile touched my lips. The island itself had fought back. Then, a voice—deep, resonant, and unmistakably real—echoed through the silence.

"You are finally here, Kayne." I turned sharply, my gaze landing on Soren. But he remained lost in thought, oblivious, and did not hear the voice. "Leave the guard behind and come over to the Haven cave"

I turned to Soren, my voice low but firm. "Stay here. Wait for me."

He gave a short nod, his sharp gaze scanning the area as he silently moved deeper into the forest. Trusting him to hold position, I took off in vampiric speed, cutting through the dense woods like a shadow. The wind howled past me, carrying the lingering scent of magic and something far older—something alive beneath the surface of Hanka Island.

The moment I reached the Haven Cave, the island’s magic stirred. The very air shifted, recognizing me. A shimmer passed over the entrance, and then, like a living thing, the cave parted, allowing me through.

Inside, the warmth of the sizzling pond contrasted sharply with the cold outside. The cavern pulsed with raw energy, ancient and powerful. And there, by the molten water, stood Gerod in his full dragon form. Majestic. Terrifying. I bowed deeply in greeting, acknowledging his presence and the overwhelming power radiating from him. The air around him crackled, and then his voice, low, rumbling, and filled with untamed might—rose to meet me.

"Kayne, your mate was here some days ago," he said, his glowing eyes locking onto me. "But he has gone to Bay Shifter Land. Your people sent vampires to hunt him down."

A growl rumbled in his chest, the sound like distant thunder.

"Hanka Island is no one’s playground," he continued. "I chased them away."

I exhaled, relief and gratitude washing over me. "Thank you, Gerod." My voice was steady, but my mind reeled at the implications.

Gerod’s massive form shifted slightly, his molten gaze darkening. "The danger lies in your Paradise Coven, Kayne." His words hung heavy in the charged air. "You need to stop Lord Marcel. If you don’t, the next time he attacks, both you and Tor will be in grave danger."

A chill ran through me, not from fear, but from the weight of truth in his words.

" What do you advice, " I asked
