Chapter 116: WHERE IS THE DAMN LYCAN

"Heroes are limited because they always have to do the right thing. But villains aren’t restricted by their moral compasses."}

I raced through the night, the wind whipping against me as I pushed my speed to the limit. The moment my feet touched the outskirts of Kayne Land, a strange shift in the air made my senses go sharp. The army was close. Too close.

I didn’t slow down. Instead, I moved faster, my heart pounding in my chest, until the familiar sight of home loomed ahead. The torches outside burned bright against the dark sky, but the tension in the air was thick, suffocating.

As I burst through the courtyard, I spotted Ma, pacing up and down, her hands clenched tightly. When her eyes landed on me, she let out a breath of relief and opened her arms wide. I rushed into her embrace, holding her tightly for a fleeting moment, as if to reassure her that I was here and safe. She pulled back, searching my face with worried eyes. "Is Tor safe?" she asked, her voice low but urgent.

I gave a firm nod. "He’s safe."

She exhaled sharply and nodded, then turned on her heel. Without another word, we walked into the house, where everyone was waiting. Dante and Rou stood at the center of the room, their expressions grave. Around them, Aurora, Nessa, Armon, and Aggrey stood tensely, the anxiety rolling off them in waves. I could feel it in the air, the weight of unspoken fears pressing down on all of us.

Dante was the first to speak. "The royal army guards are almost here," he said, his voice hard and steady. "And they have orders to capture both you and Tor."

The words sent a shiver down my spine. I glanced around the room, at the people who had stood by me, who had fought beside me. Their eyes were filled with uncertainty, waiting for my next move. I clenched my fists, pushing down the rising dread. If they wanted a fight, they would get one. But I would not let them take what was mine.

I took a deep breath, then spoke, my voice cutting through the tense silence. "Lord Marcel isn’t just coming to capture us, he’s coming for revenge. He sees this as his chance to bring the Kayne family down once and for all." I met each of their gazes, letting my words sink in. "But we will not cower. We will not wait for them to strike first. We retaliate."

Rou nodded, his face unreadable. "I will surrender myself, but we need to make it clear to everyone that the scent of Bay Shifter Pack members clings to me and my people." His eyes darkened. "That alone should raise suspicion."

Dante stepped forward, his expression calculated. "Aurora, Nessa, Armon, Aggrey," he called, turning to them. "Go back to Paradise Coven or stay hidden near Kayne lands. When Lord Marcel and his army arrive, move in with them. Keep your heads low, listen, and report back to us."

They exchanged glances, then nodded in unison.

"We understand," Aurora said firmly.

"We’ll make sure to blend in," Aggrey added.

One by one, they wished us luck before disappearing into the night, their figures swallowed by the darkness beyond the Kayne home. I stood there for a moment, exhaling slowly. The storm was coming. We had made our move. Now, we waited for the enemy to make theirs.

I stood by the window, my hands clasped behind my back, staring into the distance. The night was still, but the earth beneath my feet was alive, shifting, trembling with the force of approaching footsteps. The Vampire Royal Guard Army was drawing near. I could feel it, hear it, an unrelenting rhythm of marching bodies moving toward the Kayne home.

A presence stirred beside me, warm and familiar. My mother, Sierra, stepped closer, her energy wrapping around me like a shield. She placed a steady hand on my arm, her touch grounding me.

"Freyr," she spoke, her voice calm but unwavering, "let no one make you cower. Face them head-on, as you are the son of Dunco Kayne."

I turned to meet her gaze, finding nothing but fierce certainty in her eyes. The weight of my lineage, of my name, pressed down on me, but I did not falter. I straightened my shoulders, exhaling slowly.

"I will, Ma," I promised. "I will."

She gave a firm nod, her expression unreadable, yet I could sense the pride beneath it. The army was here, and I was owing to show them who I was and protect my family and Tor Gale.

The relentless banging on the door echoed through the Kayne home, each hit vibrating through my chest. Without hesitation, I took slow, measured steps forward, my bare feet soundless against the wooden floor. Every pair of eyes inside the house followed my movement, the tension so thick it clawed at my skin.

Reaching the door, I yanked it open with one swift motion. And there he stood. Lord Marcel, draped in his arrogance, his sharp eyes glinting under the torchlight. Beside him stood Idris, Tio, Desmond, and Byron, their expressions unreadable, yet their postures tense. Behind them, hundreds of royal guards stretched out like a sea of dark uniforms, their presence an unspoken threat.

I met their gazes, waiting. Waiting for the accusation that was surely coming.

Tio stepped forward first, his voice smooth but edged with authority. "We were informed that a shifter entered Kayne land. We have come searching for him."

I remained still, my face unreadable. My heart beat steadily, controlled.

Idris narrowed his eyes. "The scent leads here, to the Kayne home." His voice carried weight, pressing down on the room like a storm waiting to break. "We will search the premises."

A slow smirk pulled at the corner of my lips. "Be my guest."

I stepped aside, opening the door wider. A flicker of surprise crossed Lord Marcel’s face before he schooled it back into his usual cold mask. He strode in first, his boots clicking against the stone floor. His steps halted when he spotted Ma standing near Dante and Rou, her regal presence unwavering.

For the smallest fraction of a second, his eyes widened. A mere flash of emotion before he recovered, his gaze scanning the room with calculated precision. And then I saw it. The moment of realization set in.

Tor wasn’t here. Lord Marcel’s face twisted with fury, his teeth bared as he turned sharply, his voice erupting in rage.

"Where the hell is the damn Lycan?"

"Lycan?" Ma’s chuckle rang through the room, sharp and laced with amusement. She tilted her head, her expression mocking as she comically stared at Lord Marcel. "What Lycan, Marcel? You better have an explanation for barging into the Kayne lands like this. Because let me make one thing clear," her voice dropped into a deadly whisper, " I have no problem taking on you and your royal guards for trespassing into my home"

Lord Marcel’s eyes burned with fury, his fists clenching at his sides. His gaze darted across the room, landing on Rou. Without hesitation, he raised his hand, a silent command to his guards. The royal soldiers moved instantly, their heavy boots scraping against the floor as they advanced.

And then, Ma burst out in laughter, unrestrained burst of laughter. It echoed through the walls, rising in waves, filling every corner of the room. The sound was so unexpected, so absurd, that even I felt a chill crawl up my spine. She laughed so hard that she wiped a tear from the corner of her eye, her shoulders shaking as she took a deep breath. When the laughter finally died down, she straightened, her sharp gaze pinning Lord Marcel in place.

"On what grounds are you arresting my guest?" she asked, her voice steady, unwavering.

"He is a shifter spy!" Idris bellowed, his frustration crackling like wildfire.

The room shifted, and before anyone could react, Ma moved. A blur of motion, faster than even my eyes could fully catch. A sharp crack sliced through the air. Idris hit the ground hard. The royal guards stiffened, their hands twitching toward their weapons. Lord Marcel’s lips parted slightly in shock before his expression twisted into something unreadable. And then Ma was back, standing exactly where she had been before, next to Dante and Rou, her posture calm, her expression unimpressed. She arched an eyebrow. "I’ll ask again, on what grounds are you arresting him?"

"Sierra, he is a shifter in Paradise Coven," Desmond calmly responded, his voice measured yet edged with authority.

Ma, however, was unfazed. She lifted her chin defiantly, her gaze unwavering as she responded, "Yes, he is a shifter but not from the Bay Shifter pack." She let her words settle for a moment before continuing. Rou is from the mountains on the other side of the realm. He had been asleep for many years, and when he awoke, he came searching for Dunco Kayne... only to find out he had been murdered."

At the mention of my father’s name, something twisted deep inside me, but I kept my expression carefully blank.

Ma turned slightly, gesturing toward Rou, and he stepped forward, his posture unbothered yet firm. His golden eyes flickered as he spoke.

"I am Rou Rogourau from the mountain realm," he said, his voice steady and deliberate. "I came in search of Dunco Kayne, hoping to find the warrior I had once heard of. It is unfortunate to learn that he was murdered."

Lord Marcel smirked, crossing his arms over his chest. "Since when do vampires make friends with shifters?" he sneered.

Rou merely tilted his head, his gaze locked onto Marcel’s. Then, with deliberate slowness, he took a deep breath in through his nose, once, twice, his expression unreadable. And then he spoke. "I wonder the same," he mused, his tone laced with something dark, something knowing. "Because all of you smell like you had contact with shifters just a few hours ago. And if my guess is right..." He let his gaze sweep over the gathered royals, lingering on Idris, Tio, Desmond, and Byron. "...it must have been the shifters of the Crest family."

Panic flashed across their faces, brief but unmistakable. Their shoulders tensed, their eyes darting toward one another in silent alarm. Dante, ever perceptive, turned to Rou, his voice quiet but demanding. "Do you know them?"
