Chapter 38: Who is The Mastermind?
Chapter 38: Who is The Mastermind?
"Good morning, sir. I was just about to head to your place..." Matthew’s hurried tone echoed from the other end.
Noah swiftly apologized, stating he was too tired to check his phone the previous night.
"Who is the mastermind?" Noah impatiently asked, eager to confirm his suspicions.
Since yesterday, his suspicions have been entirely directed at Julia Hart. He believes she is the only person capable of such actions.
Nonetheless, Matthew’s response took him by surprise.
"Jack Donovan!"
’Ja-Jack Donovan?!’ Noah was utterly shocked.
It felt like lightning had struck him; he never imagined or expected that Jack would find his mother so quickly.
Noah recalls meeting Jack in this apartment only a few days before. How could Jack have found his mother’s location to seek revenge the next day?
"Did you guys interrogate him?" Noah asked. He wanted to know where Jack found out about his mother’s location and why the hell that bastard had the nerve to take his mother’s life.
"No, sir. We didn’t do anything to him; we only detained him," Matthew explained, his voice sounding heavy.
"And, sir, I’m sorry...this is my responsibility. My team failed to oversee him properly, allowing him to take such an action against your mother."
Noah grips his cell phone tightly, struggling to contain the anger bubbling inside him, thinking about Jack’s evilness.
"It’s fine, Matthew. I can’t blame you. That man is utterly evil. Even if you keep an eye on him, he eventually will find a way to harm my mother."
Even though Matthew didn’t say anything, Noah could hear him take a deep breath as if he still blamed himself.
Noah didn’t want to make things awkward, so he asked, "Where is he now?"
"In a secure place. Nobody will locate him."
"Perfect! Make sure he can enjoy his time before I take his life!" Noah coldly said. He had already made up his mind; whoever was the mastermind behind the murder would pay his mother’s life with theirs.
"Sir, when do you plan to go there?!" Matthew asked eagerly. "We can go now, sir."
Noah took a moment before responding. He needed a few extra seconds to gather his thoughts.
He wanted to leave immediately, but he had already promised Alicia he would go shopping with her.
After telling Matthew about his plan today, he faintly heard a soft knock on the door simultaneously.
Hurriedly, he ended the phone call.
"Yes, Alice?"
"Brother, hurry up! The noodles will taste bad if you don’t eat them now," Alicia’s impatient voice echoed from outside.
He didn’t keep his sister waiting and joined her immediately at the dining table.
Upon seeing the noodle presentation in the ceramic bowl, he felt hopeless. However, tasting the noodles completely amazed him.
Noah was surprised to learn that his sister, Alice, could really cook like this.
He thought earlier that she would serve bland or salty noodles—maybe raw or overcooked—but this was quite delicious and not much different from what their mother usually cooks.
"This is so delicious! I can’t believe you can cook now, Alice? Since when did you learn?"
A proud smile spread across Alicia’s lips.
"Since you no longer live with us. I started learning from Mom. She taught me how to cook and do other house chores."
"You did a great job, Alice. Mom and Dad must be so proud of you now. They teach you so well!"
Noah praised her sincerely before continuing to enjoy the noodles, failing to notice that Alicia’s expression now looked cheerless.
Alicia offered a faint smile at Noah’s compliment, yet inside, she felt like a storm was brewing. She struggled to hide her sadness, trying hard not to cause her brother another reason to worry about her.
"Maybe Mom sensed she would leave us so soon and wanted me to look after you, bro..." Alicia said, attempting to brighten the somber atmosphere in the room.
Her smile grew broader when she saw him shaking his head as he stifled laughter.
"Sure, maybe! But there’s no need to worry about me or exhaust yourself. Just concentrate on your studies later..."
"I’ll remember that, bro." Alicia cheerfully accepted his offer. "So, when are we going shopping?"
"We can leave before lunchtime."
...
By the time Noah and Alicia left the apartment, they ran into Jason, who had just stepped out of the elevator.
Jason felt a little surprised but quickly greeted them with a warm smile. Curiously, he asked why they were heading out so early.
"Alice needs to buy something, so we’re heading to a nearby shopping mall," Noah said, glancing at Jason, puzzled. "What brings you here? How’s your dad?" he added.
"I’m sorry I forgot to update you. The operation went well, and my father regained consciousness this morning. He asked me to go to work." Jason chuckled while pressing the elevator button for them.
"You don’t need to work today. We just wanted to shop at the mall next door."
Noah didn’t need a driver. The mall was within walking distance of his apartment.
Today, he wished to enjoy moments with his sister before others discovered his identity, knowing he would lose his freedom once they learned he was Anderson Morgan’s son.
"I did want to stay there, but my dad said I needed to work hard to pay the hospital fee," Jason smiled when Noah laughed.
...
Noah’s plan didn’t go as expected.
He wanted to accompany his little sister and enjoy shopping together. Still, once again, his new life seemed to pull him into a whirlwind of significant challenges.
This time, it wasn’t his rich friends bullying him; instead, it was the shop staff and a spoiled little rich girl who humiliated his little sister.
"Excuse me, could you please wrap the shoes for me? The size and style suit me perfectly," Alicia said to the shop staff after trying on the white sneakers she had always wanted but could never afford at that price.
Before the shop staff could respond, another young lady suddenly approached them and said, "Wait, wait... I want the shoes!! And the size fits me!"
"But, Miss, she is the one who comes first..."
"I’ll pay you double! Please, this is a limited edition, and I want it!" The little girl pleaded, perplexing the shop staff. "Use this card, and I’ll also give you extra cash!" she urged, presenting $50 to the staff.
Upon seeing the money, the shop staff’s expression lit up with a smile. She turned to Alicia.
"I’m sorry, young miss, but this is the last pair available. They are quite expensive, and you likely won’t be able to afford these shoes. Meanwhile, this lovely young lady is ready to pay..." The shop staff observed the girl wearing only an old shirt and ripped jeans, leading her to believe she was not wealthy.
Alicia, "..."
’What the heck happened here? How did this damn woman say we can’t pay?’ Alicia cursed inwardly while looking at Noah in the corner as if asking him for help.
Noah walked up to them and stood next to Alicia.
"How could you assume my sister can’t pay for the shoes?"
The shopkeeper was stunned to see the attractive young man beside the girl. "Excuse me, who are you?" she asked, confused by the man dressed in the expensive brand from head to toe.
"You have no right to know me," Noah said icily. "Give the shoes to my sister, or you’ll regret it!"
