Chapter 80: A true alpha’s dilemma
Chapter 80: A true alpha’s dilemma
After finishing up payment, Andrew headed for the bathrooms. The cashier was kind enough to point them out, and Andrew was quite pleased.
With himself.
He had gone into a large store, basically without Maxwell’s help, and he was doing well. Quite well. Sure, he missed Maxwell’s scent, but he had a feeling that even as he got better he would still miss it.
Er, maybe he shouldn’t say get better. Until he...adjusted. That felt a bit more...accepting. He felt like he wouldn’t get yelled at by Michael if he phrased it that way.
Happily, he made his way towards the bathrooms. Like most public bathrooms, the bathrooms were separated by gender. Secondary gender. It would do no one any good if an alpha went into rut around an omega or vice versa, so since they had manifested, this was how bathrooms were set up. There was even a panic room in both bathrooms in case someone felt they were in danger.
As a beta, Andrew could have gone into either bathroom. Now?
He hesitated outside of the omega bathroom, feeling like a creep.
"Is...everything okay in there?" Andrew asked a little loudly, and within seconds Maxwell was pushing open the door and closing it behind him quickly. His eyes darted around before he spoke quietly.
"I need to call Ben, so look after Amir. He seems to recognise you as a family member through me, so your alpha pheromones seem to soothe him. He’s taken the test, but is throwing up because he is freaking out." Andrew nodded, switching out with Maxwell as he pulled his phone out.
Andrew watched Maxwell march away before pushing open the door. He heard someone throw up as he did so.
"Amir? Is it okay if I come in?" He asked tentatively. He knew what Maxwell had said, but he wanted to make sure. There was a soft noise from the furthest stall, and Andrew made his way there.
He glanced around, noticing that the test was on the counter. Maxwell must have put it there.
Finally getting to Amir, he found the man hunched over on his knees, arms resting on the edge of the toilet, and his glasses sitting neatly folded only a few inches away. His normally brown skin looked sallow, and Andrew felt sympathy for the man.
"How are you holding up?" Andrew asked softly, crouching down until he could be eyesight with him. Amir glanced at him, his eyes narrowed so that he could see Andrew better.
"I feel awful. There is this big mess of nerves in my gut. Oh Andrew, what do I do if it’s negative?" He asked desperately, and Andrew reached out, placing his hand on the clearly sensitive omega’s shoulder.
"It will not be the end of the world. I promise. It would just mean it wasn’t the right time. You can’t force these things. Now, if you keep throwing up like this you are going to hurt yourself. Do you want a sniff?" Andrew asked, and Amir sniffed pitifully before he nodded. Andrew sat down, opening his arms, and the sickly man rushed him, wrapping his arms around him.
Amir buried his nose into Andrew’s throat, inhaling his scent as he clamped on Andrew. He whimpered, and Andrew ignored it.
The man was in pain. This was basically therapy. Andrew was never going to view anything he did as sexual in nature, and he hoped that Amir knew that.
Trying to be a comforting force for him, Andrew rubbed circles into his back as his body slowly relaxed.
"Should we...should we check?" Amir asked softly. Andrew had a feeling the waiting period had finished, but he also knew something else.
"Hmm, not yet." Andrew said, holding Amir as he shook. Ben would probably be trying to get here like a bat outta hell since Maxwell had called him. Andrew also felt it wasn’t his place to be the first one to check it with Amir. If he checked on his own?
That was different. But with Amir?
Hmm. It didn’t feel right.
Amir remained in Andrew’s arms, shaking and inhaling his scent for quite some time until the door to the bathroom hit the wall. Andrew didn’t flinch, but Amir did.
"Ah. He’s here." Andrew commented, and Amir trembled.
"You called Ben?" He asked, turning his head so that he could stare up at Andrew with wide eyes. Andrew smiled at him, leaning over to grab Amir’s glasses and putting them on Amir’s face gently.
"Of course we called Ben. I’m just a placeholder. You should not be looking at that test with anyone else." Amir gulped, and his eyes began to water again. It was at that moment that Ben found them. Andrew was prepared for his anger, but it appeared that Amir was not.
"What the fuck is going on?" Ben demanded, and Amir flinched. Andrew smiled warmly at Ben.
"Ah. It seems the placeholder is no longer needed. Amir was having a hard time. He needed alpha pheromones, specifically his alpha pheromones, and reacted positively to me because I smell like Maxwell. Please don’t be mad at him. He’s been throwing up nonstop." Ben froze, his eyes glancing to Amir, and then back to Andrew. Amir was shaking, tears running down his face, and Ben swallowed.
"Why is Amir in a pharmacy?" He asked slowly, and Andrew smiled.
"Oh! I’m sure Maxwell told you-"
"-He didn’t explain anything. He just sent me the coordinates of the pharmacy and Amir’s name." Andrew groaned as Ben interrupted him.
Maxwell! That was the worst thing you could have done!
Andrew shook his head, and smiled softly at Ben. He was doing his best to appear harmless. He knew Ben would overreact if he didn’t. It was a stressful time, and Andrew had been a beta before, not an unobservant idiot.
"We ran into Amir at the cafe inside of the A and D firm. We were just finishing up any paperwork in regards to my Mother, and were just grabbing a drink at the cafe. Once we ran into him, we didn’t feel comfortable leaving him alone. He wasn’t doing so hot, and I think Amir would agree with that." Andrew said. Amir swallowed, nodding. "He confessed to us what he was worried about, and here we are." Andrew said with a grin. "Now, come over here and take your mate. He needs you." Andrew said, and Ben moved stiffly.
Crouching, Ben held his arms out and open, and it only took Amir a second before he detached himself from Andrew and latched onto Ben. The way he was inhaling Ben’s scent had Ben flushing, while Andrew smiled. It was cute, this Amir koala, and Andrew slowly got to his feet.
It was clear Ben had either not noticed the pregnancy test, or didn’t think it was Amir’s. Andrew, being a bit nosy, headed over to the test.
"Ben, Amir, do you want me to bring this over?" Andrew called, looking over his shoulder to watch them. Ben froze, shocked, while Amir raised his head from Ben’s shoulder, his face distraught.
"I-I don’t-" Andrew smiled warmly at him.
"Do you want me to look at it first?" Andrew offered, while Ben was still two steps behind them.
"Wait. You think you’re pregnant?" Ben whispered, and Amir’s face crumbled as he nodded. Tears continued to fall from his face as Ben took a shaky breath in.
It was around this time that Maxwell entered the bathroom again.
"So? What’s the result?" Maxwell asked, and Andrew glared at him.
"Can’t you see that they haven’t even gotten there yet?" Andrew protested, and Maxwell sighed. He crossed his arms, glancing over towards the test, but it was too far away for him to be able to tell.
"Well sorry I’m not an expert in this area, Andrew. Unlike you." Andrew winced, taking the hit since he hadn’t explained himself yet. Ben forced a laugh.
"Wow. Do you have secret children, Andrew?" Ben joked, and Andrew did not find that funny given what they were doing, and where they were doing it.
"No. That I can promise. Unless my ex took some of my dna, but then I can sue them." Andrew said, and Maxwell snorted. \his arms were crossed, and he definitely appeared angry. Andrew worried what that meant for their ride home. Was Andrew...in the dog house?
"I wouldn’t put it past that psycho." Ben, who knew what had happened to Andrew, winced, but Andrew could tell his attention was going back to the test on the counter. All of them were anxious.
"Amir, I think if you drag it out any longer, the suspense is going to kill you." Andrew said softly, but encouragingly. Amir gulped, nodded, and looked at Andrew.
"You look first. I trust you won’t lie." Ben stared at Andrew, wondering how he got so close to his mate in such a short amount of time. Andrew shrugged, unsure as well, before smiling, and turned to the test.
He’d already sneaked a peek, and already knew the answer. He was doing his best to control himself as he picked up the stick that held the truth. Maxwell, who had been a little bit distant from Andrew since his previous comment, inched closer. He steeled his expression as soon as he saw the test results, and Andrew passed it over to Amir, who took it with shaking hands.
A big, goofy grin split Andrew’s face as the two of them processed it. Shock on each of their expressions.
"Congratulations you two."
