Chapter 79: How would you know?

"Did he do something?" Amir winced.

"Well, in a way, yes, but..." Amir reached for the cup with shaking hands. Andrew almost reached out to help him, but stopped himself. It would only insult him. He would remain on alert until Amir didn’t need it. As soon as the liquid touched his lips, Amir seemed to relax. His shoulders dropped, and his hands stopped trembling as much. "Sorry. I’m usually...more put together. I’ve been having a craving for a psl from this cafe in particular, and I had to escape the house to get here. Ben is just being...a giant worrywart and I just needed some space." Amir’s lips trembled as he gave them a small smile.

"Are you being held there against your will?" Maxwell asked softly, and Amir shook his head.

"No, not at all." He answered firmly. "I’m head over heels for the man, but I just...I needed some me time." Andrew nodded, understanding, and Maxwell looked at him, offended. Andrew winced, but decided he would deal with that later.

"Okay. That’s fine. We’re just worried about you. You seem...nervous, Amir. Is there anything we can do to help?" Andrew offered, and Amir glanced at him, his eyes filling with tears. Andrew and Maxwell immediately panicked as Amir wrapped his arms around Andrew, pulling him close.

"I just, I thought I was going to be okay on my own, but I’m so scared. I didn’t want to worry him, but now I’ve worked myself up. Can I...can I sniff you?" Amir sobbed, and Andrew threw wide eyes towards Maxwell. Maxwell frowned, but nodded. He touched Amir’s back, who jumped, but calmed down when Maxwell began to rub circles in his back.

"I know you wouldn’t ask this if it wasn’t Andrew, Amir. It’s okay." Amir’s tears soaked Andrew’s shoulder as the man pressed his face against Andrew’s neck and inhaled. Andrew held still, not moving an inch as slowly, the other man began to relax. Andrew had no idea what was going on, while Maxwell seemed thoughtful. "Did that help?" Maxwell asked gently, and Amir nodded.

He slipped out of Andrew’s arms, sniffing. He moved his glasses, wiping the tear streaks away from his face before reaching for the drink again and taking a huge gulp. Andrew winced. It must have been hot, but Amir didn’t even flinch.

"I...I know you must find this as strange behaviour. You barely know me, but I asked you something so personal." Amir’s face twisted. "I just...I couldn’t ask Ben again. He’d be worried." Amir inhaled, held his breath, and then exhaled. Maxwell placed his hand on his brother-in-law’s leg.

"Is it because you don’t want to get his hopes up?" Maxwell asked quietly, and Andrew watched in stunned silence as Amir’s eyes watered again and tears splattered onto his pants.

"Yeah." He choked out, nodding, and Maxwell sighed before reaching for the man and wrapping him in his arms.

"Oh Amir." He whispered, holding the other omega as he sobbed. Andrew, slowly, began to piece things together as he shared a look over Maxwell’s shoulder. Andrew’s eyes went wide and his mouth dropped into an ’o’ as everything slid into place.

"Hey, it’s okay to be worried. Everyone is." Andrew told him comfortingly. "It’s a small blessing you ran into us today, isn’t it? It’s probably best if you aren’t alone right now, and we aren’t going to judge you at all." Andrew offered, but that seemed to only make Amir cry harder. Andrew threw worried eyes towards Maxwell, who was of no help. The man looked about as panicked as Andrew felt.

Taking a break, since he obviously wasn’t getting anywhere by speaking, Andrew took a sip of his own drink. He was surprised by how hot it was, and how Amir was able to drink his so easily. Maxwell was still in Amir’s grasp, and clearly sniffing the other man. Maxwell remained calm, on the outside, but Andrew could tell he was panicking inside.

Neither one of them were good at this.

After a while, when Amir wouldn’t stop crying, Maxwell finally asked the question.

"Amir...do you think...you are pregnant?" Amir shook at Maxwell’s gentle question. His whole body was shaking like a leaf in the wind. He nodded and gasped as he sucked in air.

"I-I haven’t tested, but I’m pretty sure." He whispered hoarsely, his voice rough from emotions. Andrew, who had only heard recently about his story, felt his heart ache for the man. No wonder he was a damn mess. He’d lost his first baby, and now he was worried about his second.

"Does Ben know?" Andrew asked softly, and he shook his head.

"N-No. He knows something is up, but he doesn’t know...what is up." Andrew chuckled.

"No wonder you said that Ben did something. It takes two to tango." Andrew said, and Amir let out a wet laugh.

"I...yes." He agreed, and slowly, he seemed to calm down. He eventually let Maxwell go, and Maxwell reached for his tea. He took a sip and made a face.

"What is this?" Maxwell demanded, and Andrew grinned.

"I got you peach green tea. You need to expand your palate." Andrew teased, and Amir watched the two of them chat, his face solemn.

"I don’t need to expand my palate. It is a perfectly fine size. I’ve eaten things I bet you haven’t even heard of before." Maxwell sniffed, being every bit the spoilt rich kid that he was. Andrew grinned.

"So have I." He teased back, his grin wide as he stared at the man he loved. Maxwell’s ears turned pink. Andrew turned his attention back to Amir. "Did you want to take a pregnancy test? I feel like even though you are sure, it would give you some closure." Amir gulped. He downed his drink in one sip, his hands shaking again.

"I-I’m so scared. What if it says I’m not?" He whispered, and Maxwell frowned.

"Trust your body. You know what it’s telling you." Amir’s face crumpled.

"I just want it so bad. I want it to be true. What if I’m wrong?" Amir was full of self doubt and fear, and Andrew placed his hand on his other thigh.

"Amir, that just means you took the test too soon. That’s okay. It isn’t a failure. And so what if you aren’t pregnant? It isn’t as if you are never going to be able to get pregnant later. If you go into this negatively, it could affect you." Andrew told him warmly, softly, and Amir nodded. His frame shook, and Maxwell gulped down the green tea, his face scrunched up the whole time. Andrew did the same for his drink before the two of them got to their feet.

"Come on Amir. We’ll take you to a pharmacy and come in with you. You shouldn’t be alone right now." Maxwell said. Andrew nodded. Amir looked between his brother-in-law and his new boyfriend and hung his head before he laughed.

He got up slowly, his legs barely holding his own weight.

"Thank you." He said, tears in his eyes, and Maxwell wrapped his arm around his shoulder, pulling him close. Andrew felt a surge of pride. Maxwell probably wouldn’t have done that six months ago. Andrew must be having an impact on him.

"There is no need for thanks between family. You’ve been family for years, Amir. Now come on. Andrew will drive."

Andrew felt like a getaway driver as he pulled up to the closest pharmacy and Maxwell practically dragged Amir out of the car and into the store. Andrew, who hadn’t been into a store this big on his own since his change, hesitated only a second before he himself got out of the car. He made sure everything was locked before he followed the two omegas into the store.

Andrew found them rather easily, and realised immediately that he was being judged. It might not be obvious to him, but to others, it was obvious that Andrew was an alpha. And he was traveling with two omegas.

Andrew felt his anger surge inside of him, but quietly stomped down on it. It was clear Amir was in a delicate state, and Andrew’s pheromones raging were not going to help him.

Maxwell was busy looking over the different types of pregnancy tests, trying to figure out which one was the best one. Amir was of no help, and Andrew sighed, worried what this was going to say about himself to Maxwell.

"Go with those ones. They are the most accurate ones right now. Most people use them." Andrew said quietly to Maxwell, who turned a stunned expression to Andrew.

"How would you know?" Maxwell asked, slightly annoyed. Andrew shrugged, looking away from him.

"I was a beta, not infertile, Maxy." Amir gasped behind them, and both men spun to stare at him.

"I’m not feeling so good." He whispered, and Maxwell hesitated for a second before he went with Andrew’s recommendation. He tore the box open, took the instructions, and whisked Amir away, leaving Andrew to deal with the rest.

Andrew shrugged, knowing he was going to be questioned about that later too. Damn, Andrew was really making a mess for himself to clean up later.

He headed over to the counter where the cashier stared at him with wide eyes. Andrew smiled at them softly.

"My brother-in-law is a little nervous. He needed some support." Andrew offered kindly, and the cashier gulped.

"O-Oh. Where is their mate?" Andrew chuckled at their question.

"Probably panicking about where he is. Don’t worry, he’ll be here soon." Andrew offered, knowing that Maxwell wasn’t going to keep his brother out of the loop. As much as Maxwell said that his family was harsh or cruel, he knew Maxwell cared about them deeply. The way he was treating Amir was a testament to that.
