Chapter 209: You’ve earned your pain meds
"I-I don’t know. It’s...it’s hard to voice." Andrew felt small. His voice mirrored his feeling but May squeezed his cheeks tighter. Her gaze, still wet, grew serious.
"It’s going to be hard. Of course it is, but if you don’t voice it, how else am I going to know whether I should storm his company or not?" She joked, and Andrew sniffed.
"You don’t need to do that." Andrew mumbled, but May’s expression didn’t change.
"Speak, Andy." She ordered, her tone more forceful now, and Andrew swallowed.
"Can I take the pain relief medication first?" He was stalling for time, but he also couldn’t think past the throbbing of his headache either. May stared at him, not blinking for a moment before she sighed and stepped back. She reached across him, going to her side of the table where she retrieved the bottle of medication he hadn’t noticed was there and popped it open.
She shook several pills into her hand, before handing two to Andrew and pouring the rest back into the bottle. She then put the lid on, reaching across him to put it back into its place on the table before reaching for a glass of orange juice she had laid out for Andrew. She handed that to him and watched Andrew as he tossed the pills back and chased it with the orange juice.
Once done, she took the glass of orange juice from him again and placed it on the table.
During that time, Andrew was given a few minutes to think, and slowly, he began to speak again.
"We got into an argument." Andrew started and May nodded.
"I assumed." She said, and Andrew thought she was making fun of him. That didn’t appear to be the case as she didn’t give him a look or continue speaking.
"I didn’t realise that I’d done something wrong, but...I understand where he came from." Andrew muttered. "I started by explaining Amir because...it was at the wedding that something strange happened to Maxwell that made me anxious. I don’t want to say because...it’s not my place, but it was scary. Scary enough that I became insistent that Maxwell should go to the doctor." Andrew swallowed, glancing at the orange juice before he himself reached for it and gulped it down.
His throat felt very dry speaking about this. He also was just thirsty.
May watched him, her eyebrows drawing together, but she didn’t say anything, waiting patiently for Andrew to continue to speak. Andrew didn’t put the glass back onto the table after he’d wet his throat, and instead placed it on his knee, playing with the glass in his hands just as something to do while he spoke. He needed something to distract himself.
"The meeting with the doctor was on Monday. I was really nervous, because I was worried about him, but Maxwell was being really understanding of my concerns, and so I eventually calmed down until I realised that the visit was drawing to a close and he hadn’t brought it up. So, I did. Maxwell took...exception to that." Andrew swallowed, his fingers slipping against the sides of the glass, the condensation providing Andrew an easy thing to play with as he spoke. "Maxwell...I don’t think I explained this, but we met because we’re neighbours. I was helping him out a lot because he was having problems with alphas harassing him. The night I consider us moving past the just neighbours phase was when he asked me for help to scare away an alpha who was in a rut near his door."
May’s eyes went wide.
"What?" She was clearly upset, but Andrew shrugged.
"It wasn’t a big deal for me, but I was angry that he was being treated that way. Either way, after that, I would help him out from time to time. He would go out to a lot of meetings, usually at night, and since I had proved such a good guy, he asked me to help as security. He paid me, even though I told him he didn’t really have to, and I helped keep him safe." Andrew hesitated for a moment before he said the next thing. "Maxwell...he’s..." Andrew sighed. "Maxwell dated around. He always dated alphas, never dated a beta or an omega. I learned it was because of his parents after, and that most of the dates were things he didn’t want, but he would sleep with them if he found them attractive. I was just there to make sure that he was safe, secure, and that they weren’t fucking creeps."
May continued to hold her tongue, but Andrew could tell that her brain was going. Her eyes seemed to be slightly distant, and it was clear that she had a lot of opinions or thoughts on what Andrew had said already. She didn’t interrupt him though. She was keeping her thoughts inside for the moment.
Andrew nervously played with another droplet of water on the orange juice glass.
"I don’t think he’s been in a relationship like ours, ever. I didn’t...I don’t mind it, but..." Andrew swallowed. "He has high standards. If something didn’t meet those, he’d get rid of it. Both in his personal and private life. I know that he likes me, but at the same time..." Andrew trailed off, swallowing. He couldn’t look at May as he spoke. "Maxwell never kept anyone around if they did something to make him upset. He often would get rid of them if he considered them ’acting like an alpha.’ This was things like, bossing him around, speaking over him, trying to control him, ordering food for him, things like that. Things that I wouldn’t really consider ’alpha’ but for Maxwell, who is a hyper sensitive omega who has had people trying to approach him with nefarious intentions for a long time, I could absolutely understand why he was so sensitive to those kinds of things." Andrew exhaled shakily. "I just...I didn’t think I was going to do that, or that he would view what I did as that."
May reached out, placing her hand on top of Andrew’s on his orange juice glass.
"So he has some things that he also needs to work on. Noted." May said softly, and Andrew’s lips turned up in a smile and he let out a nervous laugh.
"Well, maybe." He didn’t agree or disagree, his chest tight.
"No, definitely." May replied, her tone unbending. Andrew didn’t pursue that any further.
"Maxwell told me that he was going to bring it up, but I spoke over him just as he was about to. I didn’t realise it was going to upset him so much, and it boiled down to a point where Maxwell compared me to the other alphas who had tried to control him. I got upset. I would never want to do that. I’ve seen how he treated the others who did that. I did want to be like them. I barely want to be an alpha as it stands, and I fucking hate being a true alpha." May didn’t say anything as Andrew got more passionate as he spoke. "But he said I was like them, and no, I wasn’t! I wasn’t like them at all! I still don’t think that speaking up after I thought he wasn’t going to bring up the main reason I asked him to go to the doctor is a bad thing. Sure, there were other issues, but this was the main reason. It was really, really scary, and I just wanted to make sure that if something was wrong, his doctor could check it out." May shifted on her feet, staring down at Andrew.
"What did the doctor say?" She asked quietly and Andrew exhaled.
"It is concerning, and she did order some things for him to do, but I left shortly after our argument. I...I told Maxwell that I wasn’t like the other alphas he’d been with, and I stormed out. It was childish, and I know that, but I kinda..." Andrew exhaled slowly. "He’s stubborn, but I just kind of hoped he would stop me from leaving, you know?" Andrew admitted out loud and May stared at him, her expression thoughtful before she sighed.
"So he didn’t like that you brought up what he didn’t want to talk about, hmm?" Andrew jerked.
"No, that’s not-"
"Andrew, I’m not criticizing him yet, I’m just stating what it appears to me to have happened from your side of the story. From what it sounds like, Max didn’t want you to bring it up at all, or he was nervous, and he lashed out at you because you poked him somewhere he didn’t want to be poked." Andrew stared at May, her words washing over him.
"I...I don’t know." Andrew muttered and May sighed.
"No, you do know, which is why you wanted him to stop you. You know him fairly well, Andrew, and I do think you shouldn’t ignore everything that you’re feeling, but if I’m understanding this correctly, you were also quite sensitive at the time too, yes? You said you were nervous and anxious, so I’m sure you didn’t react sensibly either. What did you do after that?" She asked and Andrew hesitated.
"I wandered around and cried." Andrew admitted. "I have never seen him that angry, at least, not directed towards me." Andrew muttered. "It was so bad. I just felt like if he didn’t stop me...that might be the end of our relationship." Andrew whispered, his thumb gliding over the orange juice glass quickly, aggressively as he spoke. "I did feel like one of his other men. It was...I ended up at a restaurant. I don’t know if Maxwell got home, or when he did, but I was expecting a call or text or something. Nothing. Not a damn thing. I waited and waited but nothing."
Andrew hung his head.
"I didn’t start drinking until day two when I’d still heard nothing." He admitted.
"He didn’t message you at all?" May prompted and Andrew shook his head.
"I don’t know why he didn’t. It was...I felt so lost." Andrew admitted quietly. "My whole life turned upside down recently, and Maxwell has been the only constant in my life while this has been happening. It was so confusing to not have him around. It wasn’t how I expected the night to end either. I just wanted...I thought it was going to be tense, but not like that." Andrew told May and May stared at him.
She crossed her arms, her chest rising as she inhaled, held it, and then exhaled.
"Okay. So you didn’t start drinking until the second day? What happened the second day?" May asked and Andrew shivered.
"He didn’t message me still. It was nearly 48 hours without contact, no nothing. He didn’t even have Mr. Newman, his assistant, reached out to me or anything. I...I pretty much assumed that we’d broken up at that point." May nodded, but remained silent. "So...I got some whiskey, told Richard I was calling in a mental health day, and...started drinking." Andrew told her. His face scrunched up as he tried to remember details. "I believe it was the next day after that, in the morning when Richard called and...Maxwell found my hotel
